Maserati BiTurbo turned in Cash for Clunkers

On a less amazing note, my next door neighbor turned in their 2002 Audi A6 wagon for Cash for Clunkers for a Hyundai Sonata for their 18 year old daughter. The Audi at 130K miles needed ~$5-6K worth of transmission work.

that dealer should have given the customer the $3500 credit without going throught the CARS program, that way he can sell the masserati at an auction and probably rake in some profit, but since he went through CARS, he'll have to kill that engine and the car would be close to worthless.
this is why this cash for clunkers program sucks.

i think your neighbor made a poor investment by trading in his 02 A6 for a Sonata, if he would have shopped around, he could have put a used tranny into the car, parts and laber under 2k, and the car is paid off, now he's stuck with car paymentrs for 48-60 months. Bad move IMO.

He's not much of a car guy, him and his wife each have 2G Prius's. The Sonata was for his daughter, his main concern was another unexpected expense on the A6 in the future. The A6 was his wife's car, she loved to drive it when it was OK but after 5 years some small things went astray, the transmission was the killer in the end.

He probably could have parted it out on eBay, but that can be a hassle. My brother managed to make about $1,500 from a rusting husk of a classic car before the remainder was towed away for scrap steel.

Salesman at the dealer should have bought it off the guy for 3.5k.
