Man Builds Audi R8 Out Of A Mercury Cougar

Well, A+ for effort...?

From here: http://jalopnik.com/5095021/man-buil...mercury-cougar

The Audi R8 is one of the most exclusive and beautiful supercars in the world, commanding auto-lust wherever it goes and wherever it's seen. But what if you want an R8 but don't have the $105,000+ to buy one yourself? You could go through the arduous process of designing and building the whole thing from the ground up in your basement, but that would take 17 years. Who has the time? Why not just design an approximation of the R8 around a 2001 Mercury Cougar, fabricate it from fiberglass, and call it the ReplicaAudiR8?

Here's the thing about the ReplicaAudiR8 — we don't hate it. For being a front-engine, front-wheel-drive approximation of a mid-engined all-wheel-drive supercar it looks damn good. We find ourselves thinking it wouldn't be a terrible thing if an actual Audi looked like this. Sure some of the details need a little work, like the lack of inner fenders at the back, and an interior upgrade which goes beyond adding an "R8" badge to the steering wheel, but it's pretty slick looking. Lets take a look at the car side by side with its inspiration.

if you look closely at the fenders they don't flow as smooth as the real R8 but i give the dude an "A" for effort.

Nothing screams quality like 7 year old Ford interior trim and ergonomics.....

Seriously, nice effort. If you're going to do this to a car (make a copy), at least this looks good. It sure beats the Fiero / Ferrari conversions in the 80's... That was hideous.

look how tiny the brakes are...with the money he spent on that, he could have put it on a downpayment for a new TT as the poster above said.

He wouldn't be able to fool any of us, but he'll probably fool the average joe.

I actually like the way the interior, IP, console and switchgear look, although I've never been in the '90s/00's Cougar .
The center stack looks better than the current Acura/Honda or BMW ones.

And I agree, it's a very nice-looking body conversion.

Damn I had no idea the new TT was that hot! I think Audi is by far the best manufacturer in terms of exterior styling these days. Ever car in their lineup looks fantastic. I just wish they weren't so overpriced.

not bad. I wonder how the fit and finish is in person. The 'sideburns' don't seem to carry the bodyline quite as well as on the real one, and I'm not sure about the side skirt sticking out like that.

but considering the cougar was always one of the ugliest cars on the road, it is amazing to see it look like that

Down syndrome is actually a disorder where there's an extra chromosome, not a missing one.

I agree that the interior sucks, but I don't care what anyone says.

You've got to give the guy mad props. That is a pretty damn good job.

talent outweighs brains.

he just pissed away all that money for a non-returnable investment. i guess you could justify it as an expensive hobby

agree with the statements of getting the TT.

great work, nonetheless. interior, calipers, etc. - the biggest giveaway is obviously the view through the rear glass!
