Maintenance B.S.?

Hi all,

I have a 2005 Accord EX. Its the sedan with a 5 speed manual and the 4 cyclinder engine. I just brought it in for its 10k mile service. Unfortunately the dealer, AutoPark Honda in Cary, NC, did a few things that go against Honda's recommendations.

1. My oil change stick has an interval of 4k. Now, the book says 10k for normal driving, and 5k for severe. Their sticker is earlier than both of these. Honda specifically says changing the oil earlier than recommended doesn't do anything but increase the cost of ownership. The service manager at the dealer claims that "engines haven't changed, oils haven't changed". He also claims "Honda uses it as a sale point" and that he does "what's best for the customer." So what's the deal here, is it 4k, 5k, or 10k on the oil change? I went 8250 on the first oil change. Sounds to me like his "what's best for the customer" is awfully similar to Honda's "selling point".

2. They put an oil additive into my vehicle. Honda specifically says not to. Again the service manager claims that he uses it in his car and it works etc. So, again, what's the deal? Honda says its bad, their dealer says its good.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The dealer is supposed to follow Honda's guidelines, if it bothers you that much call Honda Corporate..

I use Acuras recommended interval for oil changes for regular driving, 7500 miles.

Oil additive in a 2005 is worthless. If the car was 10 years old, fine, the engine could use a little help. Theres no reason to add anything to the oil now.

When i had my TL i used Mobile 1 Syn, and changed every 3-5000 miles. I wouldnt wait till 10,000 or 7500 to change my oil.

If they used synthetic then you are fine going 10k miles if you dont do any hard driving. Most dealers are doing the 10k intervals now when using synthetic oil.

I still change mine every 5k cuz i drive like an asshole.
