The SC300 idea is awesome. Also a 4th gen F-body is cheap enough and a solid platform. I went into the high 10's with under $2500 in mods.

I've seen some SC300's with Supra swaps that were really to die for, but those are big dollar builds relative to what he wants to do I think.

I love SC300s, but like Brandon said, it's not that cheap to mod compare to 240/miatas.

The SC300/400 is a fun car but if you're looking for something cheap to mod, go with the 240. You can build an SC for cheap, but you're going to have nightmares down the road. If you cheap out on stuff and don't build it correctly it's definitely going to come back to bite you in the ass.

Nice car. I'm sure he's losing his ass selling it for 8 grand (if he did the build).

Auto though? The factory 5mt SC300 swapped to the Supra 6mt are far more epic.

its basically a supra in lexus clothing. same block, same tranny. except, you could find SC300s much more easily than Supras, w/o the inflated price. plus the SC is a sleeper.

SC300s come in manual, or you could easily swap the tranny.

so, find some grandma selling her unadulterated SC300, dump about 10k, and you got a pretty quick car - maybe not 600 whp, haha, but quick enough. (could even be daily driven). the design is ageless, similar to the 2nd gen legend coupe...unlike some shitbox 240

I REALLY like this idea! It has really nice body lines. I will have to check a little deeper on this. Are performance parts readily available and any where near affordable for these?

You can find the parts but it's going to cost you. The 2JZ is a great engine for handling huge power but you have to do it right. A lot of people just keep the 2jz-ge that's in the SC300 and do an N/A-T on it because it's simpler which would be a bit less money considering a GTE with the getrag 6 speed in good condition can go for $5000 alone. I had a soarer which is the same thing as the SC300 but it's got a 1JZ in it, again it's tons of fun but you have to build it right the first time or you're going to really regret it.

What kind of power can the auto handle. My wife says she likes these cars. So it could really be my next toy. Leave the auto, give it a little pep, Let her drive it as her toy. The after she gets tired of it. I can have other parts bought up for when it is "Mine"

What would be a fair price and things to look for on one of these.
What years ? Any better than others?

Thanks,
Lefty

My money comes in quarterly. It will be June before I can really buy. At that time none will be found at a deal.

I might be able to swin a stock one a little sooner. Before I can do anything I have to get the CL in a little better shape.

They're dirt cheap usually. I see the SC400's with the 1uz V8 around here go for like under $4,000 and they make great power. The SC300's are a little harder to find usually, but I guess they're around the same price. The soarers are more expensive because of the drivetrain but I don't know if you guys get them down there or not anyway. Just check them out and make sure you're not getting a lemon obviously, but they don't have a lot of common problems generally from what I know (all I know is soarers so I'm just assuming it will all be the same).

not going to be a cheap motor to mod (even more so then the J-series in the CL)

as far as the N/A motor, i remember seeing something that other then some additional passages/bosses (which are also there on the N?A one), that would need to be drilled/tapped out, it is the exact same block, so it can handle the power (and yes the pistons are different for higher compression, but if the motor gets built does not really matter anyways)

That's right, stuff like that for a normal n/a-t swap, plus other stuff like the layout of the intake is different (not an ffim on the GE) and yeah higher compression, so you can't run boost as high without building it, but I think most people just go with a thicker headgasket to lower it a bit. The advantage to it is you don't have to do all the wiring you would if you did a whole GTE swap. It'll handle enough power stock though lol, those GTE's can get near 1000 on a stock bottom end before you start bending/blowing stuff up.

^^ yup. the block is nearly indestructible. and the firewall is mass produced, so you could easily swap trannys, etc. etc. among any supra/SC model. my installer was able to install a manual tranny into his SC in 45 minutes.

whatever you do, go with the 300, not 400. the sc300, gs300, and supra all have the same block. a single turbo setup on a sc300 wont kill your pockets, while providing some fun power to work with. of course, it wont be as tossible as a 240 or miata. most of the sc300 builds are for high end power, since they can handle 1000 whp. but do as you please - you can tune these things any way you like.

I remember when the 240 was EXTREMELY easy to pick up on the cheap....that is until motorsports version of figure skating (aka Drifting) caught on stateside.

kinda the same thing i was thinking, with not too many of them being around anymore really, and all the cheap one are going to be trashed, so you are going to pay a premium for one in nice shape
