Looking to buy american

Hi everyone, my friend needs a car ASAP and is on tight budget, and due to insurance reasons he needs to buy american.

So we need opinions of what he should be looking for.

Only rules it must under 5 grand between years 98-2004.

Thank you once again everyone.

Given the parameters of basic transportation, I'd consider either an Escort of that era, or a Crown Victoria. Seems as if those Vickies run forever.

I'm really surprised that American cars are cheaper to insure.

Must be a Canadian deal.

Car-wise, the 1998 - 2002 Chevy Prizm is actually a Toyota Corolla, so that gets him the best of both worlds in this situation.

I'd seriously consider walking instead. Or a bicycle. Or a moped. Or a llama.

i don't understand why american cars would be cheaper to insure in canada...

anyways w/ 5k, the only american cars I could think of that I'd want would be like a jeep or a pickup. maybe like an older wrangler or S10. My old roommate picked up a late model (i think 03') dodge dakota for like $3k.

2000+ Ford Taurus is a good highway cruiser for the money. Kinda sucks that he has to pick American only.... please don't tell me American cars are cheaper to insure in Canada because the union has their talons sunk in the insurance companies also.

Look up the Ford Taurus SHO - started with a Yamaha V6 in the late '80s and was a great car. Then Ford dropped in a small V8 in the last generation (which is best avoided).

You could also look at a 1998 - 2000 Cadillac Catera. It's really an Opel Omega, with US badging. It does not ride like an old luxury car, but something a bit sporty. Worth a look, anyway.

Sunfire...everyone seemed to buy them here ( ) so the used market must be huge. Another market where you'll find plenty is a used Caravan.

I know 3 different people that had Catera's and they've had nothing but headaches with them. I used to like them a lot but that made me change my mind..

Ok, if we deviate from American:

Subaru Leacy 98-03 (sedan or wagon)
Volvo V70 (wagon) or S70 (sedan) - 98-02 reliable and last forever (and Volvo is owned by Ford)

Trying to say $5K limit, reliable, and American in the same sentence is like saying faithful, virtuous, and Paris Hilton. Nice thought, but not possible.

Can you explain the American only piece better- is it price or does he get a discount for buying American? If it is price, I get that Civics will be higher to ensure than others due to theft rates, but lumping all imports togethers doesn't pass the bs test

At any rate, i suggest opening your allowable age to something a little older

Yes I think this is the general consensus with American cars.

I don't know much about GMC and my Consumer Reports sub is up, so I'll let smarter people answer your question.
