Looking to buy a 88 5.0 stang

WHats up guys, Im looking to get this 88 5.0 mustang maybe this week. This kids selling it for 1200 but i can talk him down to 800. It has a fiberglass body kit, flowmasters and some other engine mods, I think he said that it dynoed close to 300hp. Ill post some pics of it on fri when i go to see it. Its got a fully rebuilt transmission and new clutch sooo...im very tempted. The only catch is that me and my friend will hjave to put a new fiel pump in but thats not a prob.

Cant wait to tell allstate about this buy... there gonna hate me.

Anyone have any past history on these 88 stangs?

I've never had one, but it's on the list for a future buy. Great bang for the buck, very easy to mod.

my roommate in school had one, hated it until the day he let it go, then wanted it back bad

that car had a ton of power, but leaked oil like a champ, nothing electrical ever worked right, and his odomoter would spin really loud while driving other than that the windshield wipers were useless and he had power window/lock problems

but it was fast as shit!

OUCH!!!

In much the same way, I've frequently thought about getting mid-late 80s 5.0, IROC-Z or GTA to tool around in. Nothing like slumming it on occassion.

the GT or LX ???? cause the LX is badass with the torque but dont drive in the rain or even light snow. That car sucked on light rain with the best Michelins on it...rear end is just too light.

the Gt convertible is nice looking and was weighted a bit better....but not good in rain or snow and I cant stress that enough

I've got a '89 GT 5-speed that I'm gonna put on the market soon. 5.0 engine is all original & stock, a few suspension mods: Global West sub-frame connectors (welded-in, not bolted), Eibach Pro-Kit springs, new shocks and swaybar bushings. Motorsports clutch, new tires, new radiator, ram-air intake w/K&N filter, always used Mobil 1 or Red Line oils. I'll sell it with the bike rack, a pair of 10" subs & amp, hard-wired BEL radar detector. No oil leaks, odometer & power windows/locks work fine. Looking to get around $2,200. Runs strong and handles like a go-kart compared to my CL-S (but it's not nearly as comfy ) Pic here. (and have many more if anybody's interested).

killer= :P

I did too. That is until Zapata reminded me of the 5.0-Vanilla Ice connection. Nevermind.

87 and 88 were the best years for that generation Mustang (went from 87 to 93 all the same bodystyle) because they were the only two years that were speed density. People may argue, but stock for stock, the speed density cars were a bit faster than the MAF cars from 89 and up.

But the MAF cars responded a bit better to small mods.

The 5.0L engine is virtually bulletproof. Very strong runner and very reliable.

The standard T5 manual trans is weak, with 3rd gear known as being the "glass jaw" gear. A lot of guys upgraded to World Class T5 or Tremec T5 after blowing up the stock T5.

Anyway, I owned both 87 and 88 Stangs and they were both a blast to drive. Really good low end torque, although the power faded a bit in the upper RPM range. If you should ever decide to race yours, try shifting short of redline. It usually makes you faster in cars with good low end torque like the 5.0L

I had an 88' LX coupe and with just minor bolt ons (gears, full exhaust, headers, remove air silencer, K&N) it pulled like a mofo.

I agree with Tom2, 87'-88' speed density cars were slightly quicker with the bolt ons, but when going all out, the 89' and up MAF cars were the way to go.

What color is it? Is it a coupe or hatch?

hahah thats a funny as pic of v. ice....have any of you guys seen that reality show hes on with ron jeremy. It weird and kinda stupid.

Thanks all u guys for the info, I dont know what color or model the stang is..Ill be looking at it on thursday and ill take some pics of it and post it. This is gonna be a huge surprise for me on thursday. All i know is the price and the body kit....and its fast

The only reason im looking at this car is bc of its price, and its mod friendliness. Also the mods are cheaper then our jap cars. I dont plan on this car beeing reliable, i just figure that ill turn it into a project car and bring it to the track.

holy crap.. I had no idea how much demand there is for these cars- I parked my Mustang on the side of a street today with a for sale sign in it for the first time. I got a bunch of calls and ended up selling it late this afternoon to a Harley guy that was buying it for his 16 y/o daughter who just got her driver's license :shakehd:

The clutch is so stiff, I bet she won't even be able to push it in. (her dad drove it for her since she doesn't know how to drive stick-shift yet )

Linner, did you end up getting yours??

if you're worried about insurance costs...just get liability, no collision. for a <1k dollar car getting collision coverage isnt worth it.

I had an 88 GT 5.0, 5 speed for about a year. It was my screw-around-with/project car. It was alot of fun! Tons of power, good handling. It had 130k miles on it and still ran strong as hell. But it had NOTHING on my CLS in term of comfort, but thats not why you buy those cars. And for the price you could get that one for, go for it! I sold mine for 6 grand, HA! the guy really want it i guess.

Mine has been ultra reliable since I bought it in June of 2001. It had 43k on it when I bought it and now has 75k.

The tranny is fine as long as you dont powershift and dont do a ton of high rpm slicks dumps. Fox bodies are great to mod, but I just couldnt stand the 80's style interior.

And for whoever thinks they are unreliable, its only until guys start making 400+hp on the stock drivetrain that it gets iffy, and the 88-92 5.0's had forged internals, so they are nearly indestuctible with even a bad tune. People have run 200hp shots without melting pistons. Headgaskets tend to go sometimes when making tons of power without building the top end. The blocks are good for about 550-600 hp, but there are aftermarket blocks which can support 1500 hp. :o

I almost bought me one back in '89. It was fully stock and black. That was the first time I considered buying an american built car.
