Long-term Moonroof durability?
Thinking about getting a moonroof/sunroof on the next new car...
But after 10 years or so, will I have issues with leaks, wind-noise, rattles, motor failures, etc?
What has your experience been with overall moonroof durability as they age?

my 91' Land Cruiser has no problems with it's moonroof/sunroof
Although my friend has a 93' has had his motor has fail mulitiple times, to the point where they don't use it anymore.
I haven't heard to too many incidences of moonroofs failing though. Even on the legend boards where almost everyone's car is a least 10 years old.

Tough to make a blanket judgment about moonroofs in general. The RSX has an issue with the metal frame bolted to the glass panel rusting underneath the rubber seal, such that eventually the seal swells up and the roof panel won't fit in the hole anymore.

Never had a problem with the moonroof/sunroof on my 91 Integra and I owned it for 13 years. The moonroof/sunroof on my 04 TSX is working perfectly as well.

Are you still considering a Civic?
Sunroofs don't have many problems, especially new cars. I have an 11 year-old Integra with 155,000 miles. I use the sunroof pretty often; it seals properly, and I don't have any leaks in my interior or trunk. Some Integras do have this problem.... but again, its an old car. The only problem that I do have is that the motor is a bit weak, and occasionally it won't open unless I push the close button, then push the open button again.
I don't think they make many cars equipped with them anymore, but avoid T-Tops and Targas if you're worried about leaks. My brother's '91 MR2 used to leak so bad that I would have a wet spot from my shoulder to halfway down to my elbow. Then again, its easily fixable, its just that the seals that develop cracks and have flexed and distorted over time.
I think moonroofs are great for most drivers, its useful when you have passengers and don't want wind blowing in their face.

From what I've heard, if your sunroof has a problem-- bad frame, bad glass, etc.-- the problem will make itself known in the first couple of years of ownership (unless it's on an Italian or British car, in which case you're on your own...)

I've owned 5 cars. All with sunroofs. I had no problems with 4 out of the 5. The tracks and motor for the roof in my Maxima crapped out. I replaced it, and it worked great. No leaks....EVER.

Leaking should not be a problem in new cars. But you have to figure 10 years of use will break things. It's a good bet a motor may need to be replaced in that time frame. It may be fine. Depends on your weather & how much or little you use it. No way to tell until you own it.
Edit....
On the leaks the auto makers have learned over the years. The rubber seals are now around the glass & not around the roof in most cars. This makes it easier to replace the seal if it shrinks or rots over time. Makes is cheaper as well, & reduces leaking chances.

Safety Car
Admittedly a very rare occurrence, but the moonroof just shattered one day on my friend's Saturn. She didn't know because the inner cover was closed. It rained that night and her interior was soaked.
I've personally witnessed an ashtray that just broke. Glass can be strange like that.
I've never had a problem with any moonroof I've ever had and it probably won't ever happen to anybody here. But its something that might happen.

Now looking at a 07 or 08 Camry. Civic is too small for my bulky frame...I can't imagine driving that car on longer trips.

I have a 2000 TL and I bought it used and that was actually something I was afraid of at first. After I drove it in the rain I found it it doesnt leak a drop at all. On the highway its very quiet and you would never know I had one. While opening it and closing it though it does make a very loud sound but it has done that ever since I bought it. So im not sure if its always done that or after time but overall its fine.

Yeah, I know the Camry isn't that cool...back-up is probably the Civic. However, I must be fat or something...but I'm really starting to appreciate the extra room in the Camry. Plus the Civic's ride sucks...

my taurus SHO moonroof used to leak when the drains in the roof would back up and when you went through a high pressure automatic car wash (although not when you used the hand-held pressure nozzle to do it yourself in the open bay washes). otherwise no problems as long as i flushed out the drain lines once a year.
get the moonroof, you won't regret it. besides, just buy an extended warranty and it'll be covered....hopefully....
