Things can and do get better! Looks like that site just had a moment where it was down. I was just unlucky. What a first post!

Interesting... they should have used a top fuel boat though. Boat would have won.

And then they could have all started from a stop.

Ya

That was one of the slower boats. I was wondering why they didnt have any of those boats from Dubai, that would have been interesting!

Note to self: find more boat vs car races...

Call me a heretic if you must, but as a drag racing fan I'm not terribly impressed. F1 cars are the ultimate machines in closed circuits. There are literally thousands of people across the world that run quicker than that in a straight line in the sportsmen classes of their regional drag strips. I could probably put together a NHRA B/ED for $70K that would kick the F1 cars ass in a test like this. Now throw a turn in there, and the world shifts 180 degrees.

What does Honda have to do with anything? You know they just arranged the vehicles for PR purposes. I'm sure Top Gear would have run the exact same test if they could have pulled together the same assortment of vehicles from differing manufacturers.

most definitely the Honda/BAR F1 car... they run about 9 sec @ 181 mph or so.

Exactly...it was an all Honda show. Why not mix in a jet dragster & a fighter jet?

Are you sure? Back in 2003 when Schumacher raced that Eurofighter Jet, it took him about 9 seconds to reach 600 meters, which is about 3/2s of a quarter mile. And it was raining that day too.

Jet dragsters are slower than a top fuel dragsters in the 1/4 mile. Jet engines need speed to make more power. 1/4 mile isn't enough time/distance to make full power.

Fighter jet is also way slower because of the same principal

Fastest accelerating vehicle on the planet are top fuel dragsters. They pull more G's than a space shuttle launch.

0-100 in .8 second. 1/4 mile in 4.xx at 300+ MPH.

Wouldn't even be a contest.

Even a top fuel boat is faster than the F1 car in the 1/4 mile.

Not trying to be an ass but drag racing along with most American sports are idiotic.

I completely disagree. The power and control needed to send a car down the 1/4 mile track at over 300mph is amazing.

Power yes, Control No. Its a hold on ride for 4 sec. F1 is by far the best and most demanding racing on the planet with a very very close 2nd rally racing. Any one could go straight. Lets see them turn!

Exactly. While Drag racing does need skill and control just like in Nascar you need skill and control but the amount of skill it takes for F1 or Rally or anything where you have to actually turn a wheel is much harder. That's why I loved it in FnF when they drag raced a ferrari....a ferrari, is made for turning not straight line power.

I totally agree that drag racing requires minimal driving skill compared to other forms of motorsport. If I had to put numbers to it I would say it's no more than 15-20% of the total package. A vast majority of the skill required in drag racing is in tuning the car to the track and atmospheric conditions. As for the cars themselves though, I'll stand by my statement. F1 cars are nothing terribly speacail when it comes to straight line performance which is what this video was about.

I don't think you realize what it takes to make a car go 0-330mph in 4 seconds and keep in on the track. Drivers don't simple womp the gas pedal and hold on for dear life

1st of all most people would pass out from the G's and crash down the track. You couldn't just throw a F1 driver in the seat of a top fuel dragster and run 4's. Matter of fact I'd bet 98% of the F1 drivers would never be able to get the car into the low 4's. If even that many...

I'm not sure how you are comparing these different types of racing. Seems your just guessing at the skills required to run a top fuel dragster. It's a lot more than you think...

Just because you don't like a sport or understand it; doesn't mean you have to belittle the skills required for it.

b.t.w. my background comes from a good friends machine shop who runs alcohol cars. I'm also a big IRL, F1 fan.

You do know you have to be certified to drive a top fuel right? They don't just get some crazy hick from kentucky to drive it... lol

Siggy, I absolutely LOVE drag racing and I understand it very well, from Stock Eliminator through Top Fuel. I didn't mean that it takes no skill to be competative in drag racing. It absolutely does. I just think that the overall amount of driving prowess it takes is less than that of top level road racing and that the skills can be learned at a rapid pace relative to other forms of racing. Take Eric Medlen and Larry Dixon. They were crew guys with zero driving experience. In a season and a half, they were contenders at the top levels of the sport. I personally don't think that could be done in road racing.
