Leather or fake leather - why not cloth?

Leather or fake leather - why not cloth?
Seems like every luxury car manufacturer has shunned base cloth interiors. Cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter and can look like new 10 years later. What gives?

Leatherette if maintained will look the best longer compared to cloth or leather.

bitch to clean.
Same reason why people prefer hardwood floor over carpet now.
It is more luxurious.... whatever that means.

cloth holds in stains, odors, and is definitely not warmer than leather. Ever try sliding into a car with cloth seats in the winter wearing a suit and a wool overcoat? Not easy. I'd never drive a car w/ cloth seats again.

Who wears that?
I've worn a wind-breaker once in a while during the winter

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
Having both my opinion is split. The Volvo has leather, and is pretty soft but some of the piping has worn after only 23K on the clock. But they are heated.
The Subie has cloth, and even in winter, it does not feel cold. But the seats hug me better, no slipping.

Cloth seats of today do not wear like cloth seats of yore.
When I had my prius the cloth was starting to wear and age in less than years...garbage. While the cloth in my 97 JGC are holding up quite well...much better quality.
But I prefer leather/leatherette for many reasons as my other two vehicles are leather. That said...there is a quality to leather/fake leather as well. And many companies cheap on that, too.

I like cloth. It's used in overseas luxury cars.

I'll agree that in a luxury car, leather is more befitting. But I personally prefer cloth, more specifically alcantara. I generally find it more comfortable. I think the worst leather seats come from MB... great durability, but bolsters are lacking, but so uncomfortable to sit in.
For the same reason Chief said, while you can slide around with leather, I've found myself planted in turns with alcantara or cloth seats. The bolsters are leather though, so best of both worlds, I guess.
My favorite seats tend to be Recaro factory options or highly bolstered seats... other than the ones in the pics to follow, I love the Evo X Recaro.
Love the CTS-V Recaro
This looks lovely as well (Golf R)

I'd take alcantara over any other material if I had the choice. Leather/fake leather tends to crack and cloth is just meh.

Maybe luxury cars should start having sheep skin as an option. Or angora rabbit. That'd be soooooo exotic.

Perforated leather is nice, but I find stuff gets clogged in it over time. The nice thing about cloth is that you can just get a steam cleaner and thoroughly clean it out. When you're done there's zero smell in a 10 year old seat.
Hell yes that, fog lights and the keyless entry swayed me into getting a Limited.
I was going to post a pic, but didn't want to seem biased.

I like leather, especially perforated leather-- except when driving in a spirited fashion.
The TL's seats were made for someone a little more bottom-heavy and wider, so I slide a bit and have to adjust or brace when autocrossing.
Maybe I should get cloth or sheepskin covers to use when autocrossing.

The ability to slide in leather makes getting in and out easier for me. But both my Jetta and Passat's seats look brand-new after 11 years. Were they leather instead, they'd be wrinkled, and maybe cracked.

Main thing of why I stay away from cloth is keeping it clean. My mom's Highlander back seats are stained from my dog jumping all over the back, and I've tried using Blue Coral cleaner on them multiple times. My seats are clean since I take care of my leather seats, and also if you spill anything on leather it will wipe right off, meanwhile cloth would probably be ruined. I've been in new Q50s at work and I'll admit that the full leather interior has a better feel than the leatherette, and one of my coworkers doesn't care for the leatherette at all. But I don't think it's the worst thing.

Yep, those bolsters were great. I just barely fit
Yeah, I had an '88 Accord which was extremely comfortable (though underpowered) for long distance driving.
