Land Rover - What do you have to say about them?

My wife and I have always liked the looks of the Range Rover Sport. I really really like the LR4. While on a leisurely drive yesterday, she kept asking me (jokingly) about her future Range Rover (white on black, or black on black). When I told her that she could pick up one for around 30K she was surprised, and started thinking about them in a serious way.

NO, this is not a "help me buy" a car thread, I just want to know if I (you) would/should buy any of those Rovers and why yes or no? So, forget about the environment and the price of gas for a second and let's hear your opinions.

and please no comparisons to other cars......

Make sure you have a service plan that's paid up and a dealer nearby.

They are good vehicles, but it's a must to keep up with the maintenance. I'm not sure about the brand new one's from TaTa Motors, but the British one's had issues. Mine was a Ford Land Rover with Bosch electronics, so it was better than previous LR's.

Here's my account and I still drive it everyday:

My '03 Discover II 70,000 miles
1. Both driver and passenger windows have broken piece that the window sticks and won't go down sometimes
2. Roof leaks either around sunroof of luggage rack
3. Transmission and valve gaskets leak (pretty bad)
4. Sometimes the dash lights and power controls don't work
5. Replaced ignition coil at local shop $800 due to actual parts cost
6. Wiper blades, only purchased from Land Rover

And last, the value tanks worse than any car I know of. Bought mine in 2006 for $18,000 (28k miles), three years old with sticker price in glove box of $45,000. It's now 8 years old, and I probably couldn't sell it for $8k and only has 70,000 miles on it will all service records, in perfect condition (minus windows and leaks).

I Looked at the LR4 recently...very capable offroader but a civilized ride at the same time. Only complaints is it drinks gas! wish they have a diesel version.

Lots of people in the horse show world have the Range Rovers (big square ones) and they are always in the shop. I don't know the extent of the problems but I know everyone has a brand new one and they see lots of loaner cars. Also, I know you said you don't really care but gas mileage seems to be rough to say the least.

That being said, I think they are great looking cars and VERY good off road. My ex had an LR4 (think it was) and I loved the thing, especially the suede like headliner.

In conclusion, despite everyone I know having terrible problems, I still love them

Know someone who bought a used LR3 (2007 or 2008?) a year and a half ago. They love it and haven't had any issues since the purchase. Personally, I wouldn't get one, but they have been happy so far.

Oh, I forgot, my buddy bought an '03 or '04 just for the beach and surf boards. Lots of oil leaks and something happened with the tranny plus electrical gremlins. Again, cool car but be prepared for repairs

My uncle has an 08 Range Rover HSE (the big one). Although he has only 18k miles on it, it's been virtually problem free. The only thing that went wrong was the wiper motor and thats due to him trying to wipe the now off the windshield with the wipers.

Would I own one? Only if it was in warranty, and only 2011+ (due to the updated interiors)

I would be looking to take advantage of that and get a used one. Again, no solid plans at all, just thinking about the possibility.

No doubt, but sometimes you (or my wife in this case) just likes the way something looks and feels

I'll give you 5!

wow, first of all, very low miles for the year I think, and crappy to know that the drive train components leaked. I can deal with some electrical switches here and there, but oil leaks in a car with less than 100K miles , especially one that cost upwards of 60-70K new

Amazing-- all those problems and no one mentioned the 70%+ problem/failure rate with the air suspensions??

I think they look nice but I don't think I would buy one. Cayenne s maybe. My buddy has a 2004 one and I think that in 2 years and 50 000miles that he had owned it, he only spent 1000$ on fixes. That's not bad I think. And that's the first year production isn't it? Newer ones might be even better.

Love 'em. Especially the Range Rover Sport. That being said, the maintenance of it apparently gives most owners the heebie-jeebies.

Now, the DEFENDER...that's another story!

some fresh outta school kid at my office splurged and picked up an LR4. drinks gas. the car itself is great. three moonroofs with tiered ceiling is by far my favorite part about it. theres really no other SUV like it. and the interior seems more spacious than a Range Rover Sport.

P.S. The base price for a RR Sport HSE new is only 60k. Not far off from an optioned out LR4. May want to look into those used as well. Once you start entering this segment, you start getting into trouble. the RR Sport HSE and Cayenne are all priced within reach of the LR4. Depends how piamp you wanna get.

a guy in my bldg is selling a real sporty HSE for 36.5. just a pricing example.

IF I was to purchase a Land Rover, the more realistic choice would be the LR4 since two kids, family that comes to visit and a dog, so the three rows is a plus.
However, the wife likes the RRSport

Too flashy and "look at me" for my taste. Not to mention they make no sense- an off-road vehicle that 99% of people don't take off road.

So...how are they different than a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Lexus, Audi, or Infiniti SUV...?

Do Land Rovers not seem more off-road oriented than an RX350 or ML350? It's what they're designed for..

Sure. And I could fairly say I can imagine seeing a Mercedes ML/GL/G going off-road. A BMW X5 going off-road...Lexus GX/LX...Infiniti Q...

Porsche Cayenne as well.

I don't really see the Land Rover any more "off-road" looking than the rest of the competition...with the exception of the Defender.

IMO, none of those vehicles (except for maybe the G) have nearly as much off-road r&d put into them as a Range Rover does. Hence why I find it funny most sold don't ever touch dirt. And you're right, it doesn't look much different than most the competition. It's a hot looking ride.

It's hard for me to imagine a Land Rover hitting the trails. From what I hear, they do put a lot of engineering into off-road capability, but then they cover the exterior in chrome and fancy-schmancy bits that have no business touching dirt.

Kinda like Crocodile Dundee doing his business in a tuxedo

There is so much snow here usually, there is virtually no roads, anyhow.
