Ken's CR-Z Thread (Turbo Hybrid Manual) (Dyno Update!)
Allow me to present to you a hybrid but not just any hybrid. A hybrid with a six-speed manual transmission. Oh and a GReddy turbo kit as well. I'm getting a dyno tune next week, it's currently running well but nowhere near its full potential. Even so, lots of torque and immediate acceleration. Thanks to the hybrid electric boost, there's virtually no lag in throttle response even running a base map. Hoping for around 210 WHP and 220 foot pounds of torque once I get it all dialed in. For now... it sounds amazing and was well worth it!
Intercooler fit perfectly
Pipes, flanges and other fittings were very high quality
And the weather finally turned pleasant!

Yeah, it's pretty quiet since the exhaust is otherwise stock. The pre-cat got taken out and replaced with the turbo, but the CR-Z isn't very boomy. Some owners even take off the muffler and it's not that bad really. So that means you can REALLY hear the turbo instead. I'll try to get someone to take video this weekend.
Only one other person in the US has this (that I know of) the others are supercharged.

Awesome! Is this a kit or a custom system? The CRZ plus FI makes for a fun (and cheap) package!

Yeah GReddy makes a kit specifically for the CR-Z. Its around $2800 or so. Very high quality pieces. Basically just drill for the intercooler and that's it. The rest is just figuring out all the damn pipes and couplers.

Mi boosta!
Sounds like you'll have a S2000 power/weight ratio with much more torque. Hell yes!
I'm assuming the highway mileage is unchanged?

Highway mileage should still be low 40's even with the 18 inch wheels and super sport tires

L-series. Basically a Fit engine with hybrid integration. It's a sportier version with more horsepower. Stock is 130 hp and 140 foot pounds of torque. Not bad for a 1.5 really and most dynos show it makes that same amount at the wheels. Even so, it's a small engine. Basically a sewing machine, fairly bland and does NOT like to rev much. You realistically don't rev it beyond 4500 rpms. With this turbo.. that changes everything. Once tuned, it'll enjoy the higher revs and the turbo starts to really kick in just under 3000 rpms. Thats where the electric assist starts to taper off. So like the new NSX, you always have torque.

Yes. 2650 pounds, you can accelerate quite well thanks to the immediate torque and keep it under 4000 rpms with plenty of power with its untuned state. It's a lot more like driving a VW than a Honda really. Complete opposite of my S2000

What are you using for tuning? KPro?
Very unique / cool build!

Don't get me wrong, the S2000 is powerful in it's unique way but there's no getting around the huge gap of torque. The fact the hybrid system helps with the turbo lag is genius ... you essentially have built a 918 / 2G NSX!

My '16 CR-Z has a unique ECU so it'll be touch and go for a while. It has an electronic parking brake, push button start etc. Basically stuff no other CR-Z ever had so it requires some finessing.

Awesome.
One of my canyon friends brings out his fiancees CRZ to the cruise sometimes. Incredibly underrated car. Criminally capable in the corners.
Now your car will be amazing in the straights too! Can't wait to hear your feedback on it.

Dyno testing begins next Tuesday. They'll probably keep it a few days since it's a unique ECU/vehicle and frankly no one has ever done this type of thing with a 2016 model year. It's the only model year in the US that had the push button start, electronic parking brake etc.

I was going to say- man, what a stupid idea!! how much money are you spending to gain about 100hp?!
And then I saw the cost of the kit. And instantly ate my words. Wow, I'd be all over this if I had a CR-Z, also!!!

Yep, including shipping, install, dyno etc I'm trying to keep the entire project under $3500. It tremendously improves the car and my highway mileage remains in the low 40's. Even more importantly, it's unique!

Not bad for the first attempt with a new ECU (that no one has done boost with!)
We're aiming for closer to 220 in the future. Anything more will require new connecting rods and pistons.

That's fantastic.
What do your #s look like? Do you have a dyno chart?
I'd be curious to see what the torque curve looks like.

Fun Fact:
First time I saw a CR-Z I was like man, what the fuck is that...I have to have one. Life happened and I never made it happen although I did drive my aunt's in Switzerland. I love everything about this thread. I didn't know you had such large testes, Ken. I will keep that in mind when buying you shorts from now on.
I love it and holy shit...$3500 is a joke to end up with a fun hybrid. Best of all worlds and looks to kill.

Wait, I'm confused... what are the black lines (solid and dashed)?
On those two lines, the power seems to come on way earlier, compared to the rest... but peters out before the others. What rpm does the boost actually start kicking in?

Different modes, Sport/Normal and Econ
Keep in mind, the electric motor sandwiched between the clutch and flywheel gives you some decent off the line power and then the turbo spools up around 2500 rpms
