Question The Italian Tune-up

I know with modern fuel and electronics, there is no need to do this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_tuneup

There is no need to rev my engine high for my daily drive to work and home. Most of my driving is under 3,000 rpm (J35 V6 AT).

Is there a need to rev the engine high like 5-6K once in a while? In Neutral or Park? Or am I just wasting fuel?

Reving your engine in netural or park is a BAD idea! You could damage your motor very easily since there is no load on it!

The Italian tune up is a somewhat "clunky" worker for 2 things.

1. Going fast
2. Cleaning out the engine a little bit

When you are revving higher than normal (say like your 3K) much more fuel is being pushed through the injectors and any debris in there would come off. As well with that much fuel being dumped, of course the pistons and valves are moving much faster and any carbon buildup and other foreign materials should come off. Its kind of like the idea if you have something stuck on your finger you shake it to get it off. In the case of the motor you rev it harder to get everything off.

A guy with an older car with a V12 with about 80K miles, that I knew had an issue of carbon building up and other problems as soon as ethanol was introduced into the fuel by law. His car ran ROUGH and I mean rough to the point where a CEL would stay on. He took his car to the dealer and they replaced a bunch of stuff and then the master tech told him to go for an italian tune up. He did it and let me tell you this, there was an AWFUL smell in the car when he revved it to 6K though the vents. After that he slammed on the brakes thinking a line for the coolant or something had broken loose and lo and behold it was idling perfectly!

Never hurts to stretch your car's legs every once in awhile.

Unless I am mistaken, you are unable to rev your car to 5 - 6k revs in neutral or park. The ECU/PCM prevents it from revving above 5k in the circumstances you mention.

If you are not getting your engine into the high revs every now and then.....then you really don't need a car.....get an appliance like a camry.

Same thin just happened to a friend. Chrysler minivan that rarely gets driven quickly or out of town developed a terrible idle and was throwing a cel for a misfire, but the dealer told her he needed to remove the head and lap the valves. I asked her to put some good gas and injector cleaner in it and run it up on the highway without overdrive for a bit. It cleared right up.

Since this week i've been driving a lot of local lately, my gas mileage has dropped wayyyyy down because of me accelerating to much off of lights corners, and not to mention city driving my transmission is always in D4 so i never really get that over drive to save fuel.

This week mostly city driving with my last fuel up, maybe 10 or so miles on the fwy. 90 miles driven almost half tank I have a heavy foot. I'm not redlining it, but its definitely going past 3k.

One thing though I love about this acura, while the transmission, brakes and a lot of other things are bad, I like this engine quite a bit. For being 11 years old now, i get compliments on how nice it is for being an 11 year old car that was bought new at around 30k.

To the OP's original question, no need to do that with modern engines but it's still fun to do regardless

Whenever I take my motorcycle out once it's warmed up I always get up to it's 12K redline a few times.
