In case you were wondering why its a Ford GT and not a GT40, the answer is simple. Rather like the Queen selling off the Crown Jewels because she wasnt wearing them anymore, Ford sold the rights to the GT40 name to Safir Engineering, a British company that produced beautifully finished mega-money replicas of the GT40. When Safir ran into financial problems in 1999, the name was transferred to their US-based parts operation and Ford managed to negotiate a one-off deal to use the name on their 2002 Detroit Show car.
This received such a reception that Ford decided they had to buy the name back from Safir GT40 Spares but the asking price of $40 million was deemed excessive. So the GT it is. Ford know that most are still going to refer to the car as the GT40 despite it measuring 43 inches high and not the originals 40 inch height (hence the name).

I am waiting for the Chrysler to say 'DO IT", on their challenger concept vehicle, and I'm there. Wife loves my TL, says she would sell MDX , take the TL and hello challenger!

Brands that would fall in this category for NEW cars include Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, Saturn, Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Chrysler, and Dodge. With trucks/SUVs, we add in GMC, HUMMER, and Jeep.
I think my favorite brand might be Pontiac, but I'm still not sold on the G6 Coupe. The Mustang bothers me a little, I mean, the interior.
Pontiac GTO maybe. Now who's gonna pay my fuel bill?

Sorry, missed the qualifier of being <40K. In that case, I'll take a Caddy CTS.

The newer ones are much more reliable than the older models. The transmissions in the 4T40/4T45E/4T60/4T80 family is rock solid, and can endure an amazing of stress and negligance and still perform well and not have problems. (i.e. 170K on the original fluid under severe service with DexII)
I wouldn't hesistate to buy a GM vehicle solely because of their good transmission reliability.

Mustang GT convertible

I'm not talking about the color or the looks, I'm talking about the crap quality. Look at that inch of blank black empty plastic between the CD and DVD drives. Front and center, just cheap plasticky garbage. Look at the chunky buttons on the steering wheel that look like Play-Skool made them. Look at the chrome shift box that sits 1/2" about the surrounding wood, that looks like an error. Look at the wood ashtry/storage compartment door that doesn't sit flush and has HUGE gaps all around it. GM interiors always have buttons that don't sit flush in their holes so that they don't have to make them a precise size and fit. Look at Acura/Honda buttons that sit almost flush, perfectly set in their cut-out, and work with a distinct click-like motion. No slop. Those GM buttons you can practically feel moving around while you look at them, nevermind pushing them.
No way I could pay $50k and sit in an interior that I wouldn't accept on a ten-y/o Civic. Ick.

Usually in terms of major components, the transmission is probably the weaker or weakest links in most cars today.
For example, most engines are designed for a 225-250K service life, where the transmissions are only designed for a 125-150K service life, at least in a Ford Taurus. (Happen to know)
And rarely do engines have problems...usually transmissions.
Oh by the way, I saw a new 06 Equinox yesterday on the way home...looked pretty nice with the Silver. Has an Aisin-Warner 5-speed transmission. I just hope the 3.4L V6 has been completely cured of the infamous intake manifold gasket leakage problems...
