Yep, DON'T DO THE RIGHT THING. There's a reason why these low life didn't leave a note. They will deny everything and waste your time.

Instead, if someone dings your brand new car and just walks away. KEY THEIR CAR. And drive off. That's the only way to handle this type of situations.

I got back from class and noticed a Hyundai Tuscan SUV parked next to my car. (Out of all the parking spaces available). I walked over to the driver side and noticed a nice little gift from this SUV owner. Thanks!

I looked over at their door and noticed some markings on the edge of the door. I see that I received the worse part of the deal. Looks like they can just wipe off their damage.

I called Campus Security who drove by and said nothing we can do but let me take down your info just in-case something happens. I called the Police to file a report. And they wouldn't show up til about an hour later. In the mean time, I walked over the the soccer field and asked some random people who drove this car. This one man, acted as if he was deaf. LOL I said, nevermind.

Went back to my car and 30 minutes later, the cops showed up. I showed them the damage and they agreed, looked pretty obvious they did it. 5 minutes later, the "deaf man" and his wife showed up and denied everything. I asked them to open the door to see if the damages lined up. And here the funny part. The doors didn't touch. I said, okay, how about you jump in the car to weigh the car down a little and try again. They refused!

Moral of the story, don't do the right thing. Key the car that did it and call it a day.

Yeah, I read it. And you mishandled the entire situation to begin with...and then you make idiotic comments on a web forum because you're pissed.

Hopefully, someone else doesn't read it and actually take your "advice" and are actually smart enough to handle the situation the right way.

How did I mishandle it?

I called Parking Lot Security.
I called the Cops
We waited for the owner of the car.
They denied it. Refuse to give their info.

I have a dent on my car. They go home free.

What would you do differently? Get their license plate and go home?

I get that you are angry about that. Those types of people are blatantly inconsiderate. That would make most of us angry. You did the right thing. The only mistake you made is to vent on Acurazine. I take it that you are just venting, and that you would never actually key someone's car. At this point, if the ding bothers you to the point you think about this situation every time you see it, get it popped out. That should be $30 - $50 to repair.

Wow, so instead of investigating a murder, stopping an international drug ring, mentoring children about the dangers of drugs as part of the D.A.R.E. program, the police had to waste their time to look at your little dent?

There are worse things in the world, and I understand, your car is important to you, like ours are toto all of us (That's why we're on this site, after all), but you have to put everything into perspective. you spent an obscene amount of time (waiting for campus security, talking to "witnesses", waiting for the cops, talking to the cops, confronting the owners, asking the owners to re-create the crime, coming to this site to type out the whole story, etc. etc.) on what amounts to something that you'll probably forget happened in 6 months. sometimes you gotta not sweat the small stuff.

Alright you forum lawyers.
would claiming they hit and run actually do anything because I've been told cops flat out don't care about filing reports like this.

As the above poster suggested there are bigger fish to try. Doesn't mean op should be stuck with someone else's stupidity though.

You call in a hit and run with the police or go to the local station and file a report, you have their info and the photos...you now have the means to have your insurance go after them.

This is not rocket science.

Every car dealer offers a dent removal package. Maybe you should get it next time. Cost me $400 for the life of the car. No limits.

Keying their car isn't right either. You know people are just oblivious to things. It likely didn't even cross their mind the door would hit. You act like they drove around looking for your car just to ding it. Crap happens...move on.

Felt like it since I was in the furthest part of the lot and it was practically empty. When this SUV decided to pull next to me.

Take a step back and think about this for a moment - 1) you've discovered the ding and you're angry; 2) you have no idea whether this was a simple accident or an intentional act; 3) you do know that the damage is very minor. From those factors you're proposing to engage in an intentional act of vandalism (which is criminal) that results in damage which is also orders of magnitude more expensive than what happened to your vehicle. Do you not see how this proposal you've made is extraordinarily stupid?

So wait... report it as a hit and run? It's still considered "running" if they don't leave a note? I was worried it could come back to me as a filing a false report.

Not trying to be argumentative, just wondering if that's really an option. I'll have to remember that

All i have to say about this thread is.................when you take the law in your own hands (such as doing what the OP suggested),you go from being the victim to potentially being the accused.Be ready for the repercussion from there on.

They damaged the car and left the scene.

Hell, I've left a note in the past when I damaged someones car...and they still tried to call the cops on me...for doing the right thing.

People are retards no matter what side of the coin they are on.

I'v called the police on myself (once) because I hit a woman from behind at an intersection when she unexpectedly slammed on the brakes when it was clear We went through the intersection and I said, let's exchange information. She looked at me and said "Fuck it" and took off. I was worried she'd call it a hit and run so I called the cops who said they had no report but had my info now and thanks.

OP: I'm not entirely convinced your "evidence" is irrefutable proof the neighboring SUV door hit yours. What pisses me off is that you whine and carry on about how it's an eye for an eye kind of situation next time when it's a measly $150 damage. STFU already

What time of day was it? Maybe she was drinking or something. It seems like for some reason she didn't want the police involved.

I left my business card with personal info on the back side after scrapping the bumper of a new RAV4 while parking my car a couple of years ago. It had to be $800+ damage, assuming new bumper cover and paint, but I never heard from any driver or owner-- maybe it was a rental car.

A family member of mine got into an accident recently. Other guy hit her car. She tried to get his info but he gave her a list of excuses. She calls the police. Turns out the guy was driving someone else's car, plus had no insurance + no license because he was still suspended from a recent DUI!

Just something to consider. Who knows, maybe you won't be considered "at fault" even if you rear-ended them?

Suppose you get caught keying their car and now you have to fork out hundreds or thousands? Better yet, what if the owner catches you doing it and stomps the dog shit out of you? Was it worth it?
