An idiot and his project

Well, since I sold the CL to get another project, it's already time for another project.

Picked up an 86 FC RX7 last night. I honestly did not think I'd find one this fast. Started looking over the weekend and it was the only one around that wasn't hilariously high priced or modified already. Clean title, only has some dumbass exhaust on it that sounds awful. That or it's the rotary...one of the two...or both.

Anyway here's some pics. It ain't perfect but it's mine

Dat dent

So the plan is to turn it into a drift car. Eventually it will have a V8 (Chevy 4.8, 5.3. 6.0 iron any) and down the line I hope turbo. It will most likely be at least 8-12 months before that is on the table though.

BUT FIRST! Lets have a list!

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs
4: Replace side mirrors (silly tiny glass in them now)
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)

Modifications:
1: Racing seat for driver
2: Harness bar or cage
3: Racing harness
4: Aftermarket steering wheel w/ quick detach
5: Lighten vehicle (Remove carpeting front and rear/sound deadening front and rear/door panels/radio/spare tire)
6: Wheels/tires
7: Coilovers
8: Upgrade brakes
9: Hydraulic handbrake (potentially w/ dual rear calipers)
10: BIG WANG GANG

Things will be added/subtracted from the list as I go through the car and find more stuff.

Update time!

So after getting it to the shop last night, we first off took to cleaning it out somewhat. It was not pretty. I also stripped out the rear carpeting, sound deadening, rear speakers and removed the spare tire.

Here's a quick pic of that. The door panel is just there cause we were seeing why the driver door won't open from the outside, just needs a new rod.

Also needs a serious bath. Might get on that tomorrow as well as some vacuuming. Front carpets are still in cause, well I didn't feel like doing it last night.

Also test fit the Altima SE-R wheels I've had sitting around for a few years. They horribly need paint but they will most likely be drift/track spares.

They fit pretty good. Will need hubcentric rings and spacers to clear the front struts, but not much. Maybe 20mm. Poking around pricing stuff out today. Deciding where to start after I fix a few things and register it.

I can't wait to see it come together, great choice for a skid car! I recently picked up a s14 240sx I'm working towards the same goal on, that's not as cool though haha.

Lol thanks but, trust me, it's true. I'm pretty excited about all this.

So time to start working on this part of the list

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount (ordered 6/22/17)
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs (Bought 6/22/17)
4: Replace side mirrors (silly tiny glass in them now)
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)

Gonna attempt to replace the wheel studs tonight after work. See what exactly the driver door handle needs to be fixed. The whole "open the door from the passenger side" thing is already old. Also going to see if the clutch has an adjustment on it. The grab point is real high.

Well, while going in to replace the studs on the driver rear wheel, discovered the rear pads are pretty much gone entirely. Bought some hella sick Autozone brake pads ($18 lol) and was going to put those on buuuuuuuut one of the bolts for the knuckle decided it wanted to be part of the knuckle more than it wanted to be out. Had to drill it out and we were unable to re-thread the hole. But fortunately I found one on Ebay for less than $100 shipped. BUT it won't be here for probably a week. I did vacuum it out a little and also discover I have pets...ants. Bought some ant traps and put them all over in there.

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount (ordered 6/22/17)
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs (Bought 6/22/17)
4: Replace side mirrors (silly tiny glass in them now)
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)
7: Replace rear brake pads
8: Replace driver rear knuckle

At least the parts for this aren't special order from Deutschland only, or hilariously expensive.

I've also decided I'm going to wait until I go to Gridlife South in the end of August to buy a seat, steering wheel, and harness. Went last year and my friend got a wheel with quick release for like $200 from NRG. I also ordered the door linkages so I can open the driver door again. New knuckle should be here tomorrow and the motor mounts came in Saturday.

1: Replace motor mount (ordered 6/22/17)

Not bad. I've driven a few FCs, the 2 convertibles I drove seemed to just want to let the tail out on their own, really easy to control.

Update! Got the door linkage parts in yesterday. Putting those in tonight and may attempt replacing the motor mounts, depending on how much of a pain in the ass it is.

Finished the rear knuckle, wheel studs, and replacing rear brakes Wednesday. I also took it upon myself to start cleaning the plastic bits up on the car as they were very faded. Nothing serious, just some plastidip as I honestly don't want to mess with trying to remove, sand, paint all this stuff or even think about trying to find trim pieces for a 30 year old car that aren't the same way or too expensive. Started on the rear and will move forward, might do the sides tonight (Note: I am not a professional, so if my rattle can skills suck, I already know lol).

Before

After

Before (both sides on the rear looked like this)

After

Helped the car out a lot, looks way nicer. Brakes feel 100% better as the rears were pretty much metal to metal before. Can't wait to replace the motor mounts. If anyone has driven anything with bad mounts, it's awful. Also need to figure out how to adjust the clutch pedal. The clutch engaging all the way out sucks donkey ass.

Trying to decide what to do about the side mirrors. Kind of want to try to get the GKTech Aero mirrors to fit. Not sure how hard that would be to do, if at all possible. I may just buy the S13 ones and if I can't get it to work, sell them locally.

1: Replace motor mount (ordered 6/22/17)
2: Replace driver door handle (Ordered 6/26/17)

5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)

Ordered the GKtech mirrors lol. Somehow totally forgot my friend who's been working on the car with me has a damn S13. So he said if we can't get them to fit, then he will buy them off of me since they are for an S13.

1: Replace motor mount (Ordered 6/22/17)
2: Replace driver door handle (Ordered 6/26/17)

Replaced the motor mounts last night. I was hoping it would fix my large thunking issue whenever I got on off the gas in gear but noooo it didn't. Put it up on the lift while running and discovered it's the damn differential mounts, which from some googling seems to be a common problem with the FC. Oh well I wanted a project car so I got one lol. Also put the door linkage rods in. Opened the door from the outside for the first time. Then immediately followed that up by breaking the handle. There's a little lever in there that operates the latch, it's plastic and broke immediately. So now I'm in search of a new handle lol.

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs
4: Replace side mirrors (Ordered 6/30/17)
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)
7: Replace rear brake pads
8: Replace driver rear knuckle
9: Replace diff mounts

Funny, I thought the mirrors you wanted were add ons like the ones you put on a truck with a 5th wheel...
didn't realize it's 2 views of the same one. They're nice. I'm the idiot!

So we got the GKTech mirrors to work on the car. Had to modify the brackets a bit but they work. Not perfect by any means but better than the old mirror housings with 2 inch glass in them.

You can see here where they don't line up perfect. Oh well

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs
4: Replace side mirrors
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)

I forgot I had this thread

Fixed the diff mount a few months ago. No more clunking when going in/out of gear!

Got a new driver outside door handle...finally. It's silver and came from Straya! Hopefully it works

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs
4: Replace side mirrors
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)
7: Replace rear brake pads
8: Replace driver rear knuckle
9: Replace diff mount

And finally, bought a Grip Royal wheel, NRG hub and quick release, and a hydraulic ebrake at Gridlife! I'm glad I waited for that event since doing so probably saved me $100-150 with sales and no shipping.

Modifications:
1: Racing seat for driver
2: Harness bar or cage
3: Racing harness
4: Aftermarket steering wheel w/ quick detach
5: Lighten vehicle (Remove carpeting front and rear/sound deadening front and rear/door panels/radio/spare tire)
6: Wheels/tires
7: Coilovers
8: Upgrade brakes
9: Hydraulic handbrake
10: BIG WANG GANG

Yeah I can't wait to start really driving the car!

Got the new driver door handle on last night. So glad.

Maintenance:
1: Replace motor mount
2: Replace driver door handle
3: Replace two wheel studs
4: Replace side mirrors
5: Replace clutch (this is a maybe, as it isn't bad, but also isn't good)
6: New exhaust (rust holes)
7: Replace rear brake pads
8: Replace driver rear knuckle
9: Replace diff mount
