I think I'm Selling My Tacoma Tomorrow
Been a few months since I sold the S2K and the beater is getting ready to die. I've been eyeballing the Tacoma Double Cab for a while now. Not sure if I want the TRD Off-Road or TRD Sport package. Sounds like the dealer has quite a few of each in stock.
Pretty excited; this will be my first new car purchase.

I've long considered getting a Tacoma myself, and unless you plan to do extensive off-roading, I'd go with the Sport. I just like the look of it a little bit better, and it should be cheaper.

I have a tacoma off road which is nice .. we use it for our travels to our country house where we have animals and carry alot of vegtables......if you do not plan on carrying stuff in the back nor going thru ruff terrain i would suggest that you get the sport package...its just a smoother ride al the way

Congrats! What made you want to sell the S2000 and go with a pickup?

id go with the sport, it looks better.
my dad has an 06 Prerunner Double Cab Sport.
it has a few mods, intake, exhaust, and a programmer. it gets up and goes for a lifted truck
its been reliable too. no issues at all

Have you guys heard much about Toyota's Entune system? To me it looks a little slow and I wonder how "upgradeable" it will be in the future. The system doesn't do anything my cell phone can't. I also don't think I'll get it but in order to get the upgraded speakers you need to get the Entune system.

I have a Nissan Frontier, very happy with it. At the time I bought it, price for price, option for option, feature for feature, the Frontier was the better deal. The stealerships are always running some pretty good incentives on them

I drove a Frontier that work provided me for about 18 months. I hated the transmission. Around 40-45 miles per hour it couldn't decide if it liked 4th or 5th gear. Constantly downshifting every time I tapped the gas pedal.
Also the radiator leak/transmission issue makes the Nissan a no-go for me.
Edit: I will say though, the Frontier has a ton of power for a little truck. Very quick and with the exception of the transmission I did enjoy the truck very much. I just wouldn't want to have to pay for the repairs.

That's what happens when the parts are made of cheap plastic. Toyota knows they have a better product.

Ya I'd go with the Sport as well. Smoother ride. Can't go wrong with a Toyota. Still own my 97 4Runner SR5 I bought new and just bought a 2011 4Runner SR5. Love the reliability.

I don't see myself doing a bunch of offroading but the locking rear diff and other features of the package might be nice to have when needed. We'll see after I drive both.

Personally, I think the Off Road package without the fake hoodscoop looks much cleaner. Plus owning a Tacoma and not taking it off road once in a while just seems wrong. One of my old roommates had a prerunner with the off road package and he loved it.

Who the hell is going to take a brand new truck off-roading? Well yeah, maybe to splash in some mud puddles and go over dirt inclines... but that's not real off-roading. If you're going to do some real off-roading, the Off-Road package is a good start straight from the factory, but in that case you probably have more money and testicular fortitude than sense.
shit... made my yellowneck side is leaking. I'd go with the Sport.... as cool as the Off-Road package is, the Sport has more suitable on-road features. Over time I've felt that the chrome bumper and grille on the Off-Road look tacky.
Either way you can't go wrong though, I've always loved the new Tacomas. More partial to the look of the extra cab with a shortbed though, the double cab with a shortbed looks awkward and the double cab with a longbed looks unwieldy. Still, we'd better have pics! I really like the refreshed front end.

This didn't use to be the case. They changed their option packages since I was looking at them 1-2 years ago. I stand corrected!
It isn't like you couldn't take a 4wd Tacoma off-roading from time to time. Just depends how serious about off-roading someone is I suppose.

My 02 Sport has 100K on the clock and I expect to get another couple hundred thousand miles out of it easy. My 99 Tacoma has 240K on the clock now and still runs stronger than anything I've had before it.

we had the strawberry milkshake a few years ago.
My 3rd Gen 4Runner, which is very similar to the Tacoma in many aspects, suffers from this design as well. Nissan I believe used a similar design. The problem is easily fixed with a $50 external transmission cooler which bypasses the radiator altogether.
See above. Toyota was plagued with the same problem in earlier models.
See above - either replace your radiator, bypass it with an external tranny cooler, or both if you haven't done so already.

My buddy's dad has an '07 Double Cab in Speedway Blue and he loves it. They tow their ATVs to Montana with it every summer and even with all that weight on the hitch, it just marches up hills. He also just put new springs, wheels and tires on it so it rides like a Cadillac now.
Go for it!

Oh and you guys were right. The TRD Off Road had a noticeably stiffer ride compared to the Sport. The Off Road cred was nice but really, I'd be a poser with all the equipment; I'd never use it.
Thanks for all the replies.

Awesome.... rarely is there an advice/question thread about a new car that gets followed up this quickly! You'll love the Taco.
I basically grew up driving various Toyota trucks.... everything from the mid 80s up until the 06+ Tacomas. I still want one.

Sorry guys... No pics today. I left the house early to do some shooting, ended up meeting the wife for lunch and running into friends while we were out. Got home after dark.
Pictures tomorrow. Promise.
