I joined the Hyundai crowd

Hate to see my car go but I cannot accept the bad MPG anymore. The final straw was the last freeway road trip, I got 27mpg. So tonight the Hyundai dealer gave me something like 2k over fair value on my car and I took it. I have a loan on my car and just added something like 800 bucks to it. The 3 was getting 21/22 50/50 hwy city. Cant go on like that.

So now I drive a 2012 Accent SE in automatic. I tested the MPG tonight and 90% freeway got 27.5 but I'm sure it was improve as the car only has 135 miles. I'll post a pic later this week.

No, didnt even try, I know Mazda dealers arent going to give me 18k for my car when I know its only worth 15,500 to 16k trade in value. Plus I wanted a quieter more comfortable car in ride quality.

You would be better off with Honda Civic if fuel economy was your concern.
Those Accent/Elantra are atleast 5 mpg worse than Civic in real driving conditions.
27.5 mpg freeway is too poor even for ist drive with 90% freeway

Civic HF got 75mpg with hypermilling. screenshots are there.
40-45 mpg should be easy on freeway.

No, I didnt even think about Honda this time. I dont like the new Civic, its got a lot roofline that makes it feel small, same with the Eleantra and Sonata.

And I didnt enjoy how loud my last Honda was a 06 V6 6 speed.

This may not be what you want to hear, and unfortunately SSFTSX is somewhat right in this circumstance, but Hyundais seem to be really bad when it comes to getting close to the EPA-estimated MPG.

From PortlandRL's Elantra to various other threads I've seen, most of them get mid-upper 20s on average. 30s if you're lucky. I could be wrong as I haven't exactly been thorough but it's a trend I've seen.

Hopefully it gets better FE as time goes on.

From what I have seen MPG is all over the map, I just looked at the youtube video reviews from autoguide, Motorweek and CR that all got mid 30s. I have seen before I bought it some got under 30mpg overall. I'm not expecting a miracle from my 2.5L Mazda3, just anyone improvement will do.

My eldest daughter has a 12 Accent sedan AT and it's a very nice ride, good for mid-30s mpg.

However, my 12 Accord 5AT has been producing mid-30s mpg when I don't go heavy on the throttle (but not necessarily hypermiling) as well.

You wrote "real driving conditions", but at the same time EPA is representative and ratings of an Accent automatic is 30/40mpg, better than the Civic's 28/39 (automatic). Accent has a direct injection engine and should be more frugal.

From personal experience- on our '11 sonata 6MT we average in the mid to higher 30's in NOG.

How in the heck were you only getting low 20s MPGs in the 3 with 50/50 driving? I get better than that with my MS6 with spirited driving.

I have no idea. Had the car for 17k and 50/50 driving never once hit even 24 mpg. I will say the 3's 2.5L has great sound and feel. I'll miss that for sure. Just cant afford 2 cars.

Yeah not sure how that's possible. My MS6 has AWD, a turbo and makes 100+ more hp yet I got equal to if not better MPGs than your base 3? Something's not right there.

I'm thinking OP has weird taste and senses. My 6-6 was super quiet as well until I added the exhaust of course. He also complained about the ride comfort in his. Can't understand that at all. To each their own.

It certainly looks better than the Mazda3 to my eyes.

I am less impressed though by their MSRP for this class (16670$ for an hatch auto).

Hyundai MPGs seem to be all over the board- my parents average around 32-33 MPG with their Sonata Turbo when I've read of people doing far less in the Turbo. That car sees mostly highway driving, but even then I'd say at least 20% of its driving is suburban and with that mix, 32-33 is pretty nice.

Congrats on the Accent- I saw a 3 Skyactiv today and wondered if I should have bought a 3 instead of the TSX back in '10, but then I realized I probably would have hated myself for not waiting to get the Skyactiv powertrain.

I had a bug up my arse thinking of getting rid of my Mazda V6 for something a little friendlier with fuel and test drove several of the sub-compacts.

Honestly, I was shocked with the competency of the Accent. The Elantra and Focus were prob my favorites, but I can certainly see the merit in choosing the Accent hatch.

And anyone chiming in recommending the Civic, you seriously need to drive one of the Hyundais or a Focus. The Civic took a step back dynamically and the interior design is years behind the others.

I dunno what tires the 6-6 Accord had, but my K24 AT had a fair bit of tire noise and wind noise at highway speeds. I didn't consider it quiet at all.

I had all kind of tires on it. From Pilot Exaltos to Pilot Sport A/S to Primacy MXV4. The Accord 6-6 was a car I didnt want to take from LA to Miami. I used ear plugs.

Okay, I think that's a bit too much of a stretch. Are your old 3 and your new car quieter?

Hondas are notorious for road noise. And depending on what OP owned in the past, the Accord may very well have been loud to him.

Congrats on the new car! Not what I'd go for, and hopefully you get a good one that gets great gas mileage

My sunroof whistles when in tilt mode over 60 mph.

But other than that, i need to honk at people walking in front of me in lots bc they have no idea im pulling up. It could almost be considered electric.

Well to be fair to the 06 6-6 Accord I only used earplugs on long free way drives. I did the same with my old 3. Maybe I'm just expecting too much of my cars and expecting Lincoln and Buick quiet. The Accent seems to be better I think the stock 195/50/16 tires need an upgrade. Hope to wear them out soon.

@#@^&*&(&^% My new Hyundai is bad mpg

Hey Portland RL if you are reading what MPG are you getting? I just filled up and got 25.7 overall MPG. Drove it so tame too. This is 50/50 hwy city. .

The car has 410 miles and good god hope this improves. My other solution is to ride my CBR250R motorcycle which gets at least 60 mpg even if I do my MotoGP impression.

its not gonna jump 25mpg though...

OP i remember reading in some C&D test about the elantra how its suppose to get such great mpg, 40 hwy forgot city, but their real world tests showed it was no where near what epa was saying and the other competitors were just about the same even with epa lower than the elantra

so one tank of gas on a NEW engine and car and you are pissed? Relax. Take a breath and enjoy the new wheels.

Also MPG has more to do with the driver and driving situations than the rating. Maybe your right foot is heavier than you realize.

25mpg sucks for a car that should be at least 10mpg higher based on what it is ...

I hope it gets better over time for ya. Also, maybe you should try better quality gas?
