I did a good thing....Did I? *Update*
Walking to synagogue saturday morning, left my house about 8am. 2 blocks away, I cross the street. I see a current model Black MDX in the middle of the street, almost looking like they were trying to make a U-Turn. They were blocking both directions of traffic. For a good 30 seconds this person is trying to figure out what to do. It's a street that is one way in each direction with room on both sides for cars to be parallel parked. Not wide enough for a U-Turn, but wide enough for a very easy K-Turn.
I slow my pace as i'm walking to see what this person is doing, they start backing up with the wheel turned in the same direction, so they pretty much did nothing to finish the K-Turn. Next thing you know they go forward again, and CRACK right into an '08 Audi A4 parked on the side of the street. At this point I stop in awe. They finally turn the wheel the other way and reverse, hearing the grinding of metal against each other. The person in the MDX then puts it in drive and straightens themself out and proceeds towards me to the corner waiting for the light to change. I'm think to myself, what the ass is this??? I turn to go up the block, mentally noting what I see, year make and model, plate number, color, the description of the person driving, what she was wearing, everything.
I forgot to mention, I know whose car it is. I'm not really friendly with them (after all, they did just recently get the car from one of my competitors) but I do acknowledge their presence and give a handshake when I see them. the kid that drives the car also was in High School with my wife. Damage was to the entire driver's side of the car.
Anywho, off to synagogue I go. The whole time i'm trying to remember everything I took a mental note on. Then I have to pray, concentrating very much in the prayers, while trying not to forget the information. We finish about 10am, I then learn/study with a group until about 11:30am, now absorbing new information I'm learning while trying to remember everything else, having to stop my thoughts every 10 minutes to remember what I need to. I walk out of the synagogue, and bingo, I spot the brother of the kid who drives the car. Greet him just as he starts talking to a fairly attractive young woman. I start telling him what happened, he didn't know anything of it. He started contemplating if he should walk with me, or finish up with this chick, he comes to his senses and starts walking with me.
I start telling him everything I know, as if I was trained to know all of this. He couldn't believe the amount of information that I had: Happened exactly 8:10 AM, Plate number, year, make, model, color, who was driving, her approximate age, hair color and style, the shirt she was wearing, etc. I told him I learned/was trained by the police, as I did Auxiliary work for them years ago. He then asked me, "You're Autofest, right?", I said yes I am (now he'll remember me when he needs a car next time). I went with him to his house and I gave his housekeeper my phone number so he can call me after the sabbath (we can't write or communicate via phone during the sabbath, among other things). He called the Police after the sabbath was over (about 8:15pm), the police station is about 2 blocks from his house, yet it takes 'em over 2 hours to get there, that's NYC's finest for you . I gave them all the info I had, as well as my name and number to call if there were any further questions, and that was that.
Now he has to wait a few days for the police report to get any information on the owner of the MDX. Hopefully it won't be too late, and there's enough damage on her car (damage was to her P/S front fender, I was on the D/S of the car, so I couldn't see damage to the MDX from my side), so he's going to go to her house as soon as he gets an address to snap pics of the car should they deny responsibility and before they repair it (as per my suggestion), and that was that.
I did a good thing. I feel good. 2 times i've had incidents involving my personal cars parked on the street and having a potential hit and run incident, but thankfully my neighbors saw it and were proactive in making sure I wouldn't get screwed. I can finally say that I repaid back that favor to someone, maybe not the neighbors that helped me, but someone, especially a fellow "acquaintance".
Cliffs:
I witnessed a hit and run
I saved the day

I personally think thats awesome. The 4 times my accord got hit my freshman year destroyed my confidence in being able to park safely on my campus. I hate these idiots that think its ok to back into your car, even if it was an accident. It simply doesn't process in my brain of how you can simply drive off as if nothing happened...
Anyways, great job with that, and keep us posted!

You did good. Did the driver of the MDX make any sort of acknowledgement they hit the other car?

Just last week my wife told me that she was just getting into a parking spot before the holidays, someone (a young married snobby female driving an ML350) was trying to squeeze behind her to clear the crosswalk asked my wife to move up a little, which she did. Next thing you know, this person bumps into the back of our car (RDX), not to mention ultimately squeezes us in the spot, that if she isn't there to move back, my wife wouldn't be able to get out of the spot. My wife gets out and taps on with douchebags window, asking her if she realizes that she just hit our car, the douche replies, "all I did was tap you, there's no damage, what's the big deal?". All my wife wanted was for this person to acknowledge that they did something wrong and apologize, but they didn't think they did anything wrong and told my wife to relax. They both went into the same store and that was that...that's ignorance for you..
Even funnier was she was asking me if I knew who the person was by describing her when she told me what happened, I didn't know who she was. We were walking home the next night from her parents house after dinner, we see a married couple strolling their baby home, and my wife says to me, "oh my g-d, that's the person who hit the car", so I look back and her husband looks back at the same exact time and we both make eye contact (his wife probably said the same thing to him) but we both keep walking. I've seen the husband before, don't know who he is, but didn't pay attention to see what his wife looked like as we crossed paths with each other to see if I knew her. Oh well.

I had someone nail me in a gas station parking lot once...the guy clearly hit my car and my car had the damage, all I wanted was an apology...which he wouldn't give me. Things escalated and he bascially told me to eff off...which made me lose it and attempt to put my right leg through his passenger door. I was younger and am not proud of it but it really gets to me when someone can't be decent and say sorry.

awesome job, karma is a bitch to some and helps others.
A few years ago, my 1 week old maxima with 300 miles on it, was backed into. I was parked at least 30 spots away from anyone else.
Someone with a trailer hitch backed into my bumper. Luckily someone was nice enough to leave a note with all the other persons info so i could call the po-po.

Nicely done, man.
My car has been in two hit-and-runs. Luckily, my buddy saw it happen the second time. I was able to catch the girl who did it, and the cop tore her a new one. His father's brand new truck had recently been in a hit-and-run, so he showed no tolerance for her behavior.
Again, excellent job. Hopefully the biatch will get what's coming.

Man I wish you had been around Saturday night when I came out from dinner to find that someone had done about $3500 worth of damage backing in to my TL.
After my deductable and a couple days of rental car, and time off from work, I'm probably looking at a $700.00 Chinese dinner. FML.

I hate ignorant people who think it's ok to "tap" into other peoples cars and drive off like nothing happened. I'll never park on the street in Philly ever again because of this. My bumper has like 4 small dents in it from different peoples license plate screws and I've just recently got a door ding at the supermarket. Not once was there a note.

You did a great job! I can't believe you remembered all that information, I wish there were more people like you around NYC.
Back when I had my Mazda Millenia, I left it parked on Avenue L for 5 days while I went on a trip, I came back to find someone had made a U-Turn into my car, damaging my fender and front bumper. I fixed the damage and 3 months later the same thing happened!

Good job. It's nice to know some people still do the right thing.
I did something similar at the San Diego Zoo a few years ago. A couple was leaving the parking lot in their Caravan and bumped into a truck. I waited a while to see what they were going to do. They saw me so they had to put a note on the car. Just to make sure I checked the note - it was bogus. I then wrote down all of the info on a note, put it on the truck, walked back to the Zoo to tell security then drove back by to see if the owner came out. They were there and I gave them the whole story.
The guy called me a few days later thanking me and offered to send me a gift card. I declined, but he insisted. It never came.
I wish someone like you was around a couple of weeks ago when someone hit my rear bumper and trunk. Dented the bumper, scratched, cracked and peeled the paint, dented the bumper, cracked the plastic piece... etc. This happened at work, so I keep looking for a red vehicle that was high enough to do this kind of damage. No luck so far.

So today was the final court date. We bounced around a few rooms, and met with an arbitrator. I gave my testimony, and so did the defendant. She denies everything, she said there's no reason why she would even be there, and she's sleeping at 8am and it wasn't her. The arbitrator kept saying "but they have your license plate number and your car identified", and she kept denying it. It wasn't until her son sitting behind by the benches opened up his fat mouth and said something, which pretty much sealed the case. He said that Geico(their insurance company) inspected their car and said there was no damage, and they had pictures to show proof. So the arbitrator looks through the pictures and sees a shot of the front right corner of the car and sees damage, she says something to us about seeing visible damage on the panel that I stated hit the car, and the son says "oh, we bought the car that way". The arbitrator said she would make her decision soon and get back to us. I think I won the case for them. I feel good. I'm excited.
