It's just like in China, if you can afford the status symbol of owning a new car, you can afford to pay the government for it.

I recall being in Colombia back in 96 and the price of an 2G Eclipse GS was pushing $50k US back then. So no shock here when it comes to the price of cars in third world nations.

Anyway, over that condo. I'd like to have a place like that in SoHo.

in Singapore, contest to win a Subaru Imprezza (?) where the last person with his hand on the car gets the car.

But to own a car in Singapore, you pay a fee to get the privilege of buying a car. But it's not that simple - the country only hands out a certain number of said privileges a year. So you have to bid for that first of all. So car ownership = fee + actual cost of car, with the fee being higher than the value of the car. This is to deter citizens from buying cars since Singapore is the size of a US shopping mall.

Getting back to the contest, the winner, even though he won the car, he still has to pay the privilege fee.

Humans have and always will be divided by social stratification. There's just simply too many people in this world now -- and with the way foreign nations are imposing these policies onto their citizens (with phenomenal success), I have no doubt American leaders will follow their lead do the same to us at an exponentially growing rate.

You can argue the possibility of population control, but the hypocrisy of humans knows no bounds when you have liberals crying about the inhumanity of imposing limits on the number of offspring you can have.

You have quite the imagination.

It's not the number of people. It's the growing "middle class" of the world that are able to consume for the first time ever. Welcome to the global economy.

Welcome to the wonderful world of overpopulation where people brag about how many kids they have.

Liberals are the ones crying over limiting offspring? Republicans would cry just as much if not worse. During the republican presidential debates they were debating who had the most kids like it was something to be proud of. I bet republicans would be for it on the case of blacks or Latinos though.

Eight times the list price?! I'll never complain about Oregon's $220 registration fee again.

That means my pokey little Elantra would have cost $185,200!!
