how to mod a 98 GSR?
A buddy of mine has a 1998 GSR. What can he do to this thing to juice it up? Can anyone suggest some cost effective mods? What brands?
Are there chips for this car?
I told him to get springs/struts first, then strut and sway bars, then headers.
Thanks for any advice. He wants to come cruising with me and another friend of mine, but with him in a stock gsr he's not going to last too long...

GSRs don't have a bad powerplant to start with...170hp/128tq. You can do the regular mods to it...but not gonna gain much HP unless you do a motor swap...like a b18c5 and/or turbo the motor.
These cars, from what I've gained, are good auto x-ers. If you do some suspension mods it is a great handling car...sways, springs, shocks, ect..
If you get headers, you will gain HP but you are going to lose TQ..and 128 isn't high to begin with..
I would check out some of the forums out there...not sure which one's i'm allowed to post in this forum but just take a look, they're out there. Be careful of the riceboy boards however..

Greddy makes a larger turbo kit for a 98 GSR don't know the HP improvement it runs about 2500+ install.
also Turbonetics it runs 3700+ install
Jackson racing has a S/C kit for 2400 + install
Jet makes a chip for it but you have to send it to them and they'll send it back
it runs 275+install+the shipping fee to send to Jet.
Greddy Intercooler will run you about 750+install

Cams, cams, cams, cams, cams
Cams do wonders to these motors. I suggest going w/ quality cams and cam gears. Hondata makes great ECU's. I/H/E is good, but a waste IMO.

Low Budget:
Headers - DC Sports
Intake - AEM CAI
Exhaust - Any Cat back
Intake Manifold - Skunk2
Cams - Skunk2
Valvetrain - Skunk2
ECU - APEX VFACII
High Budget:
Headers - JUN
Intake - Mugen Air Box - might be hard to find
Exhaust - APEX'i N1 catback
Intake Manifold - JG Edelbrock Victor X
Cams - TODA
Valvetrain - TODA
ECU - Hondata
Then you can always add a 75 shot, or building the bottom end for high or low compression, high compression = all motor, my favorite.... low compression = boost it

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it...
How much would cams cost?
He is not into racing at all... he doesn't want to build a super fast car, or have any noticeable changes to the appearance (other than maybe a drop)... he just wants to be able to have a little fun with the car.

Beet, if your buddy has a few grand to burn, I'd definitely recommend the ideas that Water-S posted.

true, but it didn't sound like his buddy wanted to spend a ton of cash right now. Cams would be the first thing I'd do to that motor

JDM front-end conversion is soo sexy. If I do end up getting a teg after this car that is one thing I am going to do...looks sooo much better IMHO

He is only doing this because I'm setting up some sunday drives on these cool roads around here, and stock he's not going to be able to keep up (well he won't modded either, but whatever). Just looking for a few things to help him out so we aren't waiting on him...
but I figure once he gets a couple things and realizes how much better his car runs, he'll be hooked. He's got money to spend, just gotta convince him to spend it on the car.
Cams... around $500 for that car right? How much would install be?
