How do you locate the previous owner of a car?

I found a car I might buy at a used car lot. How can I contact the previous owner with only the VIN available?

Did you happen to check the glove box for the owners manual? A lot of people leave their info in there.

You wont find it unless the owner was careless

You really think any business would give out such a thing? It just opens up a can of worms labeled privacy violation lawsuits.

The guy who sold it to the car lot got less money then if he would have sold it himself. He did that so not to deal with you.

Only way to do that would be either through a police data base or at the DMV, both are impossible unless until you have someone working for either departments.

There is one way you can try. this is what my brother did cuz he wanted the other keyfob, the 2nd master key and the valet key.

first he called every dealer in the town the car was purchased from to see where it was serviced at, by giving them the vin.

After finding the dealer u gave the vin and the person at the dealer gave him the name of the previous owner that the service was done under.

than he called 411 and tried to get a phone number and there he hit the jack pot

he called and got in touch with the owner and got his dam keys.

i still can't believe that the stupid dealership guy game the name of the previous owner to him but yeah there you go try that

I traded my legend in when I got my S4. A couple months later, I got a call from the guy that bought the legend. He wanted to know if I figure out why the radio no longer worked in the car. I never asked how he found out my info, I wish I did now though.

Does it really matter ??

If you're that heart set on knowing the cars history, just find one from a private seller

Reminds me when my 330ci was totaled and the new owner called my cell.

He bought it at an auction and said he found a receipt under the seat with my number.

I wasnt too thrilled.

That sucks to hear. Wait, did you total your 330ci or did the new owner total it? Either way....

I didn't hear back from the guy who bought my car (said he was gonna buy it for his sister) but when I randomly saw it on craigslist, it had a brand new paint job, was slammed and looked awesome. Funny thing is, I was selling and was almost completely honest, while the buyer lied and ended up putting the car for sale a month after he got it. Seeing it with a new paintjob... I almost wanted to buy it back. But knowing what it went through...

Funny thing is I never REALLY cleaned the car until I sold it, and I found a school ID of the previous owner. I never really met him though, since I bought the car from a guy who got it off an auction.

I inadvertently found out from Jiffy Lube. They had the previous owner's info when they punched in the license plate number.

Why would you have the same license plate number as the previous owner?

In many states, Texas for one, the license plate is issued to the car, not the owner.

What the fizzuck. So if you buy a car from a proctologist, you could be the one driving around with a license plate saying "ASSMAN"?

Vanity plates stay with the owner, regular plates stay with the car.

Not in every state, only Cali and a few other states do that as far as I know.

When I purchased my explorer the owners card, and insurance card were in the ashtray. I thought a few times about contacting the guy about why he got rid of it, but decided it wasn't worth it.

FYI the guy had an MD at the end of his name, so just because your a doctor, doesn't mean you have common sense to clear out all your belongings In his defense though im sure this explorer wasn't driven by a doctor, it was probably his kids car. It had college parking pass's stuck over the side windows.
