Honda Pilot - 2006

Thoughts on the 06 Pilot from any owners here? Will test drive one tonight - my wife currently drives an 02 CRV

reliability, cost of maintenance, gas mileage (maily city), handling, power, etcc..

Thanks in advance

Check out the MDX section, very similar vehicle.

yeah...try the MDX. similar price range for a 04-06, plus better material, ride and more power. i test drove a few Pilot a few years ago for the wife but did not like the feel of it. the dash was also a big turnoff.

They are very reliable vehicles. I don't see many in the shops I have work at, and when I do, it's only for mostly oil changes or tires.

My wife drives a 2003 Pilot EX with the factory DVD player, the 2006 was updated with a few nice extras's (sunroof, heated seats,...). It has a little over 165K miles, I highly recommend a Pilot, ours has only required besides maintenance a window motor and a right headlight (lens yellowed). It's very easy to drive especially in traffic, does not feel like a 4400lb vehicle more on the road. Very responsive handling, reasonable mileage (~18-22MPG overall), seats 8 (although the last row is really only small children).

My brother recently got an 06 Pilot. He loves it. Him and his wife liked the features of the car and enjoy the way it rides/handles. My brother is shocked by how comfortable it is and how he does mind at all having to commute with it at times. He also has mentioned it does not feel as heavy as it really is. Gas mileage has been good. He did not get it off the lot for a steal but I went along for his and his wifes car shopping and believe he got a good price without having to haggle too much.

We have a 2007 Pilot EX-L navi (aka Mommymobile as my 4-year-old calls it) that we bought new and now has a touch over 30k miles.

We get 18-19 mpg with my better half driving in the city and frequently better than that.

The wife LOVES it. She won't even consider an MDX (I tried! I wanted moar SH-AWD and she blocked me.) No major issues. You will love it. It's cheaper than an MDX but you lose features like memory seats and Bluetooth. We went aftermarket with the Bluetooth, though and it works fine.

The only things I don't like about it are a) you couldn't get the rear DVD AND the navi in the same Pilot. WTF? , b) No SH-AWD, so it's not fun for me to drive like an MDX would have been, and c) it's not my V. Again, wife loves loves loves it.

I would pull the trigger on the pilot. Very similar to the MDX.

I like the 06+ Pilot but personally I'd rather buy a 05 MDX. Very similar price range.

test drove one - Ok car but still felt like a bus when taking a turn - it was more stable in the turn though than my wife's 02 CRV due to it's wider stance

I wish Honda/Acura had a small V6 SUV version of the Pilot - that would have been the ultimate for us

As far as the 04-06 MDX, why pay premium gas for an almost identical engine - don't care much about looks - I care more about the engine, ride, and handling

My sister has a Pilot. I believe it is an 07. Solid vehicle. Very reliable, good cost to maintain. I would definitely pull the trigger on one.

IMO, I like them a bit more than the MDX if it is properly equipped. But that's just me.

You're paying premium gas for a premium ride.

The ride does differ from the Pilot. I feel like the Pilot drives a lot more "truck like" than the MDX.

The Pilot handles OK for a large, tall mostly FWD (even the "4WD" Pilot we have is only 4WD part time) vehicle. I've driven much worse.

Our family has an 06 with about 47k miles on it. It has been solid with no problems. Maintenance is extremely cheap, especially if you DIY or don't let the dealer try to talk you into unnecessary BS. We average 21-22 mpg around town.

Maintenance is mostly oil changes, air filter & cabin filter changes, the MID will let you know when and what is due to service.

Bringing this thread back. Anyone with any input? I may pick up an 06 EX-L Navi this week for the wife. We need more space, will become a family of 3 soon...

Our 2007 EX-L navi 4WD is still going strong. We bought it new in January 2007 and it now has 53k miles on it after several cross-country road trips. It's even been to the top of Pike's Peak three times now (I take all my cars to the top of Pike's Peak....it's the CTS-V's turn this year). The only problem it has is that the driver's side headlight has excess condensation. No rattles or untoward sounds. It is on its second set of tires now.

The wife likes it enough that she doesn't want anything newer. Lots of room for anything you need. Gas mileage is crap, though, though much better than the V (19 mpg in routine driving vs. the V's 14 mpg, LOL!).

I hope my wife likes hers too. Tonight I picked up a 2006 EX-L with navi. One owner with all the maintenance records and a warranty for another 2 years or 120k miles.

That condensation problem seems to be a common issue...I see it all the time at work although nobody ever seems to care about getting it fixed.

Something about that generation Pilot makes me want to load one up with some gear and go chase tornadoes through the Midwest...not really sure why.

I tried twice to get a Pilot. While shopping for a new family vehicle back in 05, I considered the 1G Pilot but ended up with a Murano. On the second go round, I was looking at the 2G Pilot but ended up with an 09 MDX instead. Both times the wife said . She wanted something that looked less utilitarian and had a 'bling' to it.

That said I'm not too certain how the later 1G Pilots and MDXs price out these days but, if a well cared for 07-08 MDX is within range then I'd highly recommend it. It may require premium fuel (and consume it at the rate of 15/20mpg ) but it's performance will put a smile on your face all the while transporting the family in comfort and style.

Found a couple of accessories on Craigslist I might pick up this weekend. Some crossbars for $75 and a cargo net for $15.

I picked this thing up for $11750 with 87k miles on it. KBB prices it at $15,800 private party value. I just couldn't pass it up. For now all I see is it needs tires.

Good purchase. We have an '03 EX-L with the DVD system that we bought new and it's still going strong. 94k miles and hauls around our three kids.

Great deal!

Congrats, our 03 Pilot (one of the first 10K built) has 203K miles and still going strong. It's been very reliable and still on original CV joint boots, exhaust, brake rotors. Very low cost of ownership.

I can give you a 110k mile review. My cousin got one brand new in 2006. And he beats the living hell out of it, he does rapid accelerations and last minute braking all the time. He got the SUV when he turned 17 I think. He use to do burn outs all the time to.... But in the 110k owner ship it has been the most reliable vehicle, he has got normal service done and all changes at dealer ever 5k. Last time I went to Florida, I drove the pilot and still the ride was smooth and no tranny issue.

Thanks! That's what I wanted to hear. My mom and my aunt both have MDX's well over 100k and they've been great.

Put on a sunroof visor and some chrome OEM side step bars. I can't decide if I want to :
A) tint front windows
B) get a bug deflector
C) get window visors

With the roof visor

None of the above. Looks good as it is.

I hadn't thought about the OEM step bars. They look reasonably nice.

A & B. I've never been much of a fan of side window visors.

I think it makes it look completely different. I paid $230 shipped on eBay for OEM, took about an hour to install.
