Honda/Acura's oil percentage deal?
How many of y'all with Hondas or Acuras or any other rides with the percent go by that or miles?
the reason i say this dad and I was talking about this.
on the newer Hondas and Acuras this. Now I'm old school 3000 miles new oil filter and 5 quarts of new Mobil. I was talking with momma she said she goes by that percent.
I don't trust the computer.
discuss.
thanks

3k oil changes are a WASTE! Ive been doing 10 and 15k intervals on the TL for over 215k. Dont you think the guys that build the motor know more about when the oil should be changed and if it wanst prudent to go past 3k they wouldnt have designed the monitor to show how it does???

Looks mean NOTHING beyond the oil doing its job picking up sludge and combustion byproduct waste
7500 per your minder system is good on quality brand oil- longer if you get analysis and learn how its holding up
Its not the 60s anymore man

I have an 04 TSX so it doesn't have that new oil % thingy. I just make sure I get an oil change every 5k. If I had a car with that % thing, I'd keep track of the miles in between changes anyway, just to make sure it gets changed in a timely fashion.

I've thought about moving oil changes from 3k to 5k. but i've thought i've had good luck(as far as no internal failures) at 3k. i'll admit it .i don't trust the oil filters to last that long.
between 10 and 15k no way in hell i'd go out that far. that would be me changing oil about 2 times a year. now i'm changing it about ever 6th to 7th week if i'm on the road consistantly with that car.
i've been doing 3 k on all our gas rides for probably atleast 20 years.

In the "old days" the auto makers used to recommend 3K intervals. But with all the advances in oil filter and oil technology, most auto makers have upped the drain intervals.

The oil on my TL is changed w/dino oil @ 50% as well as at 5%-0% on the Maintenance Minder- that works out to between 4K and 7K miles or so, as the distance for service/oil changes varies with the MM system.
The non-maintenance minder cars get oil changed about every 6 months or so, but they don't get driven more than 4K miles each during that period.

Like Greeny said. Its your money. My bet is on the guys that design the motors, not the oil change places and dealers trying to make a buck. Not to mention, if you really want to know what your motors doing have the oil tested. Ive gone as far as 20k to a oil change. Changed the filter out at 10k. The TBN of the oil was 3 (which if you dont know what that means, it means there is more life of the oil left)
Oh and the motor that had 10-15 and even a 20k change interval still has the original cross hatching in the cyl walls at 215k. and didint consume oil.

I change my oil every 5K miles and by that time the MM (Maintenance Minder) is usually at 10%. Besides, 5K is a nice easy number to remember since it's also when I rotate my tires.
I'm currently running dino oil because I got 4 free oil changes with my car, but I'll be switching to synthetic after and will probably move to a 7.5K OCI (oil change interval) and rotation.
If you do a UOA (used oil analysis) you'll see that your dino oil will usually hold up for about 7K miles or so. If you run synthetic, you should be good for up to 15K or so. Personally, I wouldn't run my oil that long since the filter will probably go bad on you before the oil does.
But to answer your question.... No, it's not necessary to do 3K mile oil changes anymore. 5K mile changes with dino is fine and won't harm your engine. If you don't drive that much, just make sure to not run dino oil for more than 12 months.

For my '04 TSX I follow a modified version of the "normal" service schedule. The schedule says to change it every 10K miles. I drive around 8K mi./yr. so I change it once a year and use Mobil 1.

These days, there are many helpful additives in oil formulas that increase the longevity, durability, and efficiency of motor oil. Take fsttyms1 car for example, he put well over 200K miles on his engine and it never burned a drop of oil. He ran the oil change intervals an average of 15K miles!! Do some research and see for yourself. 3K mile oil changes are a waste of money and bad for the environment.
On my TL, I change the oil at 7500 miles and I'm thinking about letting the current oil go to 8500. I'm using Royal Purple Synthetic. Think about all of the advancements in car technology compared to 20,30,40 years ago. Do you really think engines and oil are the same as they were back then?

3 months/3,000 miles is old-school (i.e. dinosaur) thinking.
New oil and engine technologies plus evaluation and Failure Modaities are what drive extended Oil Change Intervals.
Actually it should say, "Extended Maintenance Intervals", because these types of changes apply to a wide, wide range of automotive parts.
So, be a dinosaur if you want to; or step up to the brave new 21st century world and live a little.

Enough with the personal beliefs and old-school or new-school theories. I take everyone's advice with a grain of salt, including my multiple ASE-certified auto instructors, people from forums, engine builders, what the manual recommends, etc. An oil analysis is only $22.50 and can tell you if there are any underlying issues with the car that can't be found by just looking at the oil.
Following the maintenance minder = too. I always knew it was, but when the oil change reminder lit up a few hundred miles after an oil change made me realize it. Even newer "oil life monitor" systems built into cars are inaccurate too.... they merely base OCI warnings on driving habits. Do you REALLY think that automakers would invest in or innovate such a device that monitors the amounts of certain particulate matters in your engine's oil at a given time? Even if you do.... how much do you think that would cost and do you think they would add it onto every single car?

You are correct, one should get samples and have them tested to know for sure though. I do twice a year just for peace of mind and to know.

My oil changes are free and paid for by the company. I change it every 50% on the MM.
$25-50 or so for oil and a filter is cheap peace of mind for those of you who do it every 3k or 3 months. I also understand the argument that some synthetics can go up to 10k or longer without changing. I spend more on DVDs in a week.

Also a waste of natural resources.

The sizzle in the Steak
Anyone who changes their oil at 3k miles in 2008 needs to have their head examined.
The modern day engine can go much longer than 3k miles between oil changes.
Go with the manual or the car's service interval indicator.
