Hey man, can you turn up the V8?
The Active Sound Design technology specially developed for the new BMW M5 takes its cues from the driving situation at any one time to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engine's sound through the car's audio system. The system's digital signal processing exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to reflect the engine's revs and torque, and the car's speed over the road. The result over a smoothly driven journey is a discreet soundtrack in keeping with the harmonious and assured characteristics of the V8 powerplant. A stamp on the accelerator, meanwhile, prompts an immediate audible response to match the instantaneous – and typically M – burst of power from beneath the bonnet.

Not sure how i feel about this... and a bad sign of things to come. Clarkson was right when he said we are living in the golden age of supercars...

Just tune the thing louder so i can hear it with my windows up or down and NOT thru my speakers

I don't understand why they don't just rid of some of their sound suppression measures. I suppose it's so they can have a very quiet car 90 percent of the time, but didn't the corvette have a exhaust system that would do something like that already?

i would prefer a more analogue experience to something purely digital
maybe i can upload some v8 noises to a prius and have them play inside and out. the future of motorsport.

This type of thing is what manufacturers need to be doing instead of this crap thru the speakers. Hell you could do it with the airbox as well with a flap that bypasses the resonator chamber making it more like a cai at wot for sound.

Say what you will, but Ford has the best implementation

This is pretty much better than anything they can ever come up with. And basically every car out there has it

I dunno-- I guess I'm the only person in the world that thinks exhaust noise is a bad thing at full throttle, and would want a 600+ hp Vette or Lambo that is completely silent.
I just remember my kids complaining about the exhaust noise in the stock 2005 Mustang GT that I test drove-- it wasn't loud to me, but I didn't want any more of the exhaust note to be piped into the interior, either.

I remember thinking that the Cobras and 'Vettes with side exhausts in autocrosses were too loud even when I was in high school and college.
For some reason, I like the idea of stealthy-- quiet, low -- cars that won't attract attention at speed. Well, I guess an Aventador or GT40 would attract attention regardless of exhaust note.

That explains it...All those older fogeys in the So Cal SCCA LOOOOOVE to bitch and moan about anything and everything...any car that shows up and makes so much as a growl, and they are sitting their bitching about how their exhaust probably exceeds regulation decibel levels...
Which street do you live on...I'll come do some buzz bys at WOT

Meanwhile the RL uses the stereo to counteract the engine and exhaust noise. Much better use of a sound system, IMHO. Loud does not equal fast.

Not far from Centinela and Culver Blvd., where LAPD, Pacific Division HQ is located.
Actually, I'll be dropping by the PV library tomorrow @ 3:30 pm, so you can annoy me-- and your neighbors-- by driving up and down Playa Vista or Promenade.

Automobile mag said that the car sounded like a V10 inside, but went away after disconnecting the stereo.

I don't know about this. It's been my opinion that manufacturers no longer offer engine sounds, but exhaust sounds instead. There is a difference. Oh sure, displacement, cylinders, firing order, and crank all influence exhaust note, but the the sounds emitting from the tailpipes are often artificial. Even suppliers of aftermarket exhaust don't sell systems that compliment engine exhaust, but instead focus on a pleasant or aggressive note.
Personally, I prefer quiet exhausts. I would rather hear that combined with an engine sounding like it go the distance and back again than a muted engine with an aggressive exhaust.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
I love starting my car and it barely having a sound. It is only when I hit WOT that it sounds good (since I removed the intake resonator tank). So I have a thin intake through the hood and a hole pointing to the wheel well bringing in air that sounds great.
BMW, I think you're making your super sedan more sterile. Not good.
