Completely understand your worry about the vette. I hated the interior and thought the outside screamed old man until I drove a Z06, wholly hell was it quick and you couldn't unstick it. The raw power was enough to win me over.

Not really. I am afraid of German cars.
I used to have a 1995 328iS around 1999-2000. That car developed a lot of crazy electrical gremlins like the doors stopped unlocking (had to jump out through window a few times), AC went out, oil leak.
My dad had a 2001 740i. From about the second year of ownership to the day we got rid of it, it had a battery drain problem. If you left the car sitting for more than a week, the battery would die. Never could fix it.
We had an ML320 that had to go to the shop under warranty for all sorts of random things like coolant hose breaking (at less than 20k miles?).
On the plus side, I have an aunt with an S430 that has been very good and it is over 10 years old. So maybe it is luck of the draw, but I don't want to play that game. I am going to avoid BMW/MB/Audi unless I find their reliability has improved.
I have no experience with Porsche, but others say they are better than the other Germans. So I am going to research into them too.

And that Z4m... that would be fine. And it's yummy... and quick. Saw a beautiful one on the road the other day. Anyway, I wouldn't rule out any of the German brands just yet...

I got something
After test driving two Cadillac XLR, a BMW 335i, two Porsche Caymans and a bunch of miscellaneous cars, I finally bought a 2010 Nissan 370Z Touring, with Sport Package and Navigation.
Thanks all for the advice. In the end, the XLR did not give me the kick in the seat acceleration the 370Z did. It felt a lot like the RL I had. It also had the strangest speed sensitive steering ever. I test drove two of them just to be sure it wasn't an isolated thing. It felt overboosted at low speed and not tight enough at freeway. There was an XLR-V that I briefly debated going for at significantly more money, but it was still really the same car with more power.
The Porsche Cayman S that I looked at was compelling but did not have features like bluetooth and nav. A regular Cayman with nav was available but the 5 speed felt like a step backwards in time, and there was still no bluetooth.
I don't have any pictures yet because I have not taken delivery of the vehicle. When I do, I will post a few.
Thanks again for the support.

Congrats man. I would have suggested that you go and test drive the Z06.
At the same time, 370z is an awesome car, even in automatic.
I got to drive a few when they first came out and was really impressed.

Congrats, I had a 350Z before my 911. You will enjoy the Nissan and the newer interiors are much nicer and less cheap and plastic. I heard the rev-matching is pretty nifty too.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
Can you get a CPO A5 in that price range? just a thought.
