Help diagnose this IS300 clicking noise..

I can't figure it out. The sound is coming from the rear. It appears to be left rear. It comes and goes. It's annoying. It's embarrassing. Do you know what it could be?

Sounds like it happens on acceleration. Maybe the axle? Check the axle nut.

Recently, my Honda clicked but in a higher pitch sounds from the front. I was able to fully isolate the sound by jacking the front up and letting the wheels spin without load. Even without any load, there was a clicking sound. I was able to isolate the sound to a bad bearing. I replaced the bearing and no more annoying click click click sound.

Do you hear this sound going straight or only on turns or all the time?

Mostly during acceleration. I was reading somewhere that it could be the axle nut.

It's more pronounced when the car is making a turn. Mostly right turns. It's dependent on speed as the clicking intervals become closer together.

might be a cracked axle or from the spring. My old v6 Accord had a bent rear axle, and that noise was annoying as hell. Had to replace it.

That car and my accord are pretty old just wear and tear. Hope it aint too serious.

KaMLuNg 06-07-2012 09:48 AM

check the axle... get the rear up on some stands and run it without load... get another person to safely look and see if the clicks still happen...

I took it to my buddies shop and three of them decided it was the rear diff after putting it in the air. Then one of them decided it was the rear brake pads, which is what I thought it might be. He said it was missing the metal clip that holds them in place. The car was perfect on the way home..probably 15 miles or so. And then it gradually started getting louder and louder which made me decide to run these video clips.

When the car was in the air on the lift, it didn't make the sound.

First thing popped in my head when I heard that noise was axle.

ACCURATEin 06-07-2012 02:01 PM

So if this is the axle, is there anything visually that I could look for?

Check this out: Loose Rear Axle Nut on IS300

SpiderX1016 06-07-2012 02:49 PM

It probably didn't make the sound cause there was no load on the drivetrain up in the air.

Legend2TL 06-07-2012 03:56 PM

Sounds like a bad CV joint, kinda rare for a CV joint to go up on a RWD vehicle. But look for ripped/torn CV jont boots and grease most probably on the outer joints.

StreetKA 06-07-2012 09:44 PM

axle or rear diff

charliemike 06-07-2012 10:19 PM

Did anyone click on my link? I think it's the axle nut :)

Thanks for the link. I had found that thread a while ago and checked the nut but didn't find it to be loose. I will check it again whenever I jack the car back up.

Any last predictions before I tell you what they replaced?!

High-speed bumper bolts? Blinker fluid? :tomato:

It's all ball-bearings these days.

CCColtsicehockey 06-14-2012 03:06 PM

Well I know it wasn't the diff

charliemike 06-14-2012 06:56 PM

Read something about a pin in the caliper somewhere else
... Wonder it it applied here.

SuperTrooper169 06-14-2012 07:24 PM

I'm putting my money on the axel nut. My MS6 has a slight click as well under load and that's what the MS3 guys have narrowed it down to.

charliemike 06-17-2012 01:45 PM

Hey, Ding Dong OP how about ending the suspense? :bored:

:tomato:

Sounds like something's loose.. not broken.

Majofo 06-17-2012 05:06 PM

RSB? link?

CCColtsicehockey 06-18-2012 06:07 AM

Since he isn't posting I will. It was the axle. I believe it was fully replaced with a new one and the problem is now gone.

ACCURATEin 06-18-2012 01:29 PM

They replaced the drivers side axle. I'm not sure what was wrong with it. Wish i could have looked at it in person to see exactly what was making all the noise.

Thanks for everyone's input. A lot of you guys were right!

Glad it worked out, it sounded like a CV joint (which are part of the axle) in your video. Sometime they go bad even without a torn boot.
