GT-R to 2013 GT500????
Not to mention if you can get out for around what you paid... that a huge win in my book. I'm not a fan of the GT-R. Looks are OK, but you can't do anything in that vehicle yourself. Seriously, I think if you fart on the seat you have to bring it to the dealer to have the ECU recalibrated.
If it was me, I'd be in an R8... but out of the two you listed, I'd go GT500...
Maybe the next round of small mods and some ADV.1's will cure the itch for a bit?
I am going to a GT-R meet in Palm Beach in July. I am supposed to get a ride in Tim Sanders previous world record holding Alpha 12+. 1000 WHP on pump gas! May change directions completely after that ride!
Still about 2 years from being able to go really exotic. I like the R8 but i'd have to go V10. It's not like I can really just march on down to the Ford dealer right now and buy a new GT500. They are pretty limited right now. Those who have them are trying to get over MSRP. I may wait till the winter time and see if I can pick up one used. By that time I may be in the position to keep them both (at least for a little while) I thought about going hog wild on the GT-R (Alpha 10 or so) but shit, that costs as much as a whole GT500. And that's money that you never get back on those big builds. Hard to justify that I spent as much on my already fast car (to most peeps LOL) just to make it faster, than the whole damn car costs.

don't have to wait two months to get them

OP I'd look at a used 911 GT3, Turbo or Turbo S, V10 R8. Moving to a 991S is more a lateral move. The new R8 should be dropping soon which will drive down the prices of used R8s. Of course at that price point, you could spend a little more and get a Challenge Stradale.
This is probably old news to you achenator, but I think this video does a very good job of differentiating the two cars:
Note: That's a 2011 GT500 and 2012 GT-R, but you get the idea.
IMO, if you're looking for something with neck snapping torque and crazy tail happy antics, then the GT500 is the perfect car for the job. If you're looking for something that can be both driven daily and tracked, then stay with the GT-R.
Regardless, I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever car you end up with or stay with!

3,900 lbs
yet,
0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds
60-0mph in 101 feet
lateral accel 1.05g
hmmm....seems like a trade from the 10 to the 12 GT-R may be the real move.

But I will say that the Stang has the sweetest exhaust note of any current production car and in general has no equal in the pony car segment.

I would stay in the GT-R:
Its great resale is as good of a reason to keep it as it is to sell it. The GT500's resale is unproven at best.
You said you're only a few years away from something really exotic. If I were you, I'd throw a little more money at the GT-R to hold you for those years, then make the huge jump.
To be honest, I'm not that big of a fan of the GT500. I think the '13 Mustang's rear end isn't as good looking, and early reports say the GT500 is stiff as heck. I'd take a ZL1, even with the power difference.

But I'm with the others that say step up, not stay in the same area or take a step down.
Getting the GT500 will get you a lot of power, but having the GTR is more exotic than it. It catches more people's eye and can probably grip like no other compared to the gt500.
Then there's also your money will take a hit with the gt500 cause the GTR is not going down in value anytime soon, Ford cars well they dont hold up so well...
Lastly move up!!! Save more money cause this car isnt depreciating much. And then upgrade to one of the cars surfer rick pointed out. I vote 911 GT3!!

at the Mustang is slow comments

Says the guy with the rip-snortin supercharged V8. Actually my wife would be easier to get on board with a CTSV wagon.
