Was harder to find then I imagined. Lots of tips and lots of cabs. Neither of what I wanted.

This car is clean.

57k miles
2 owners (this guy has had it 11 years)
Just did major 60k service.
Bilstein pss10 suspension
Rest of car is stock

Very well taken care of.

Suspense is killing me. Went and saw it last night. Worked out a price to convince him to take car of eBay. I'm heading out of town for 3 days and he needs to smog it so I'll be picking it up Thursday or Friday.

I had been looking at a lot of randomness last few months, vipers, other classics, etc. actually barely lost out on a full 62 Impala lowrider 2 weeks back. Wife eventually slapped me across the head and told me to go find a clean p car.

That's a childhood bedroom poster-worthy car! Hot damn!

Omigod. Nice car sir! And plans for mods?

Rick_TL-S 11-22-2015 07:46 PM

Great looking car!

Aman 11-22-2015 08:28 PM

Very exciting! That car looks like a lot of fun. In to see what it's like under your ownership.

wackjum 11-22-2015 10:06 PM

Very nice. The 996 turbo is under-appreciated but I love it. The 997.2+ Turbos have lost a lot of character.

CLtotheTL32 11-22-2015 10:13 PM

 What a beauty! Congrats!

Sarlacc 11-22-2015 10:17 PM

Sweet, congrats dude!

Here?s Why The 996 Turbo Is The Best Porsche 911 You Can Buy

So those would allow you to get into the what, 500HP range?

Nice pick up! X50 car?

One of the best used sports cars to pick up for the money right now....

Best of luck with her:thumbsup:

myron 11-23-2015 05:24 PM

great vehicle, congrats. Always wanted one of these, too bad they are so damn expensive for me

oonowindoo 11-24-2015 02:47 AM

good stuff!!!

Are you gonna do something about the CF trims?

wackjum 11-24-2015 07:32 PM

Once you get your car, let me know if you need help with something or want to know more about their quirks. I have had mine for about a year and a half now and I've done a few DIY stuff on it.

My thread is here: https://acurazine.com/forums/car-tal...%2A%2A-928058/

Mods:

Bilstein PSS9 coilovers
AWE tuning exhaust with high flow cats
ECU tune from EVOMS to get 1.0 bar of boost from the factory 0.7

Cosmetics:

Full LEDs for the interior bulbs
LED rear brake light
Sidemarkers from yellow/orange to clear
Wheels

Maintenance:

Oil change (dealer wanted $400!)
Transmission and front differential fluid change
Changed out fuse for cig lighter (juniorbean's cig lighter was also out. Seems like a common issue)
Brake pads

Spark plugs and clutch were done as part of the routine maintenance by a shop. Also my alternator broke one day and stranded me. Had to have it towed to a Porsche dealership ($1200).

The car is not particularly cheap to maintain but compared to my friends's toys (Italians and MB/BMW) the smiles per dollar is a lot cheaper.

The CF trim is very thin and gets warped from the heat. A factory replacement is several thousand. I just pulled off the warped pieces.

Ya. Mine looked pretty straight but I didn't see it till almost dark.

Pick the car up tomorrow.

Car has pss10's

Will do a tune probably shortly (evoms, as I live real close to sharkwerks; will maybe do exhaust)

How easy is oil change on these cars?

Anticipation is killing me.

Yumcha 11-26-2015 11:59 PM

:toocool:

Congrats!

wackjum 11-27-2015 10:54 AM

The oil change is definitely do-able at home. For me, I have two used brake rotors that I back the 911 onto and that gives me an extra 2 inches or so of clearance. Enough for me to reach under and do the oil change.

There is a technique where you pull the fuel pump fuse beforehand, then crank the engine and use up the fuel in the lines. Then you proceed with the oil change. After you fill in the new oil, you crank the engine with the starter, but since the fuel pump is pulled, the car won't actually start. This helps to prime oil into critical places like the turbos before you turn it on the first time. There is a vigorous debate over whether this technique is necessary. The first time I changed oil, I didn't do this and the engine did sound rough for the first few seconds. The second time, I poured about half a qt of oil into the filter area and that helped reduce the clanging startup to about a second. I plan on trying the fuse trick the next time to see if it makes even more difference.

The cheapest way to get the change done is to buy an oil change kit from Suncoast Porsche ($29.99+shipping and you get all factory consumable parts). Then pick up 9 qts of oil. Factory is Mobil 1 0W-40 (European formula). That is what I use but there is another very vigorous debate on the forums about using 5W-40 or 5W-50.

There are 4 drain ports. Two are 8mm hex socket, one is 15mm and one is 19mm. The 19mm bolt is at the end of an aluminum spigot thing. You will need to counter brace the spigot with a 27mm (or 1 1/16") wrench or risk breaking off the spigot. It sounds tricky but it really isn't as bad as it might seem.

You'll get 7-8 qts of oil rushing straight out once you open the 19mm bolt, so have a good sized pan ready. If you're using one of those enclosed oil collection pans, the oil might run over since it can't go down fast enough.

You will also need a 74mm 14 flute oil filter wrench. I bought mine on Amazon after trying to get by with cheap ones from Autozone that sucked.

By far the most annoying part is that the car has no dip stick. Oil readings have to be taken by the computer and it requires the car to be level and warmed up. So add 8 qts of oil, then drive around for a bit, and slowly add in oil a bit at a time until you get full on the meter.

There are quite a few DIYs on rennlist and 6speedonline for various maintenance things and the community in general seems helpful.

SuperTrooper169 11-27-2015 01:14 PM

:what: That's the most insane oil change procedure I've ever heard of. I never knew it was any different from the typical drain fill and go of a "normal" car. Damn.

1StGenCL 11-27-2015 03:21 PM

That is insane :what:

v6cord2k5 11-27-2015 04:24 PM

Seems a bit more involved but I bet the smiles per oil change are worth it.

:pimp:

wackjum 11-27-2015 07:31 PM

It is really not too bad, but does take some specialized tools and over an hour whereas I can change the oil of a regular car in about fifteen to twenty minutes.

Most dry sump oil systems have multiple drains and a lot of capacity. The two 8mm drains are for the turbos.

The real problem is the front transaxle. The fluid is mobil pentilube and can only be bought from dealers in 20 liter containers for $500+. (You need a little over 3 liters)

Sources are all over the map on suitable replacement fluid. I use Red Line 75w90NS for about $60 per gallon. The forum likes to use Mobil Delvac but any I can find is well over $100 per gallon and Delvac says it is for diesel engines and seems thicker for racing purposes.

The other Porsche approved fluid is Shell Transaxle but the only place I can find this is at Ferrari dealerships... People say Shell Spirax S5 is the same but I can only find drums of that. It is a mess and the forum people are very very intense on their choices.
