So, a good buddy was getting married in LA and the wife and kids couldn't make it. Gave me an excuse to do a solo road trip, because an hour plane flight just didn't sound like much fun. Turned what should have been about a 650 round trip drive, i turned into over 1,100 miles. Did a bunch of jumping on small back roads between the 5 and 101. Got stuck on a road closure due to an accident and the officer said I'd have to wait an hour.....then chuckled and pointed to a construction truck and Ford Raptor and said I could follow them down the detour. Well, i said fuck it...detour turned out to be a 10 mile dirt and gravel road. Held up with them doing between 40-50 down the whole thing, they gave me a big thumbs up at the end as I passed them once we got on asphalt.
Drive back was solid to, got in line with a group of about 10 from the Vagos MC, and did 100-115 up the 5 for about 2 hours. They gave me a good salute as we split ways, when I got home I googled them....probably shouldn't have followed so closely, lol.
Still can't express how much I love this car. I've put over 15K miles on it in 2 years, which is impressive considering it's a 4th car.
Was harder to find then I imagined. Lots of tips and lots of cabs. Neither of what I wanted.

Spark plugs and clutch were done as part of the routine maintenance by a shop. Also my alternator broke one day and stranded me. Had to have it towed to a Porsche dealership ($1200).
The car is not particularly cheap to maintain but compared to my friends's toys (Italians and MB/BMW) the smiles per dollar is a lot cheaper.
The oil change is definitely do-able at home. For me, I have two used brake rotors that I back the 911 onto and that gives me an extra 2 inches or so of clearance. Enough for me to reach under and do the oil change.
There is a technique where you pull the fuel pump fuse beforehand, then crank the engine and use up the fuel in the lines. Then you proceed with the oil change. After you fill in the new oil, you crank the engine with the starter, but since the fuel pump is pulled, the car won't actually start. This helps to prime oil into critical places like the turbos before you turn it on the first time. There is a vigorous debate over whether this technique is necessary. The first time I changed oil, I didn't do this and the engine did sound rough for the first few seconds. The second time, I poured about half a qt of oil into the filter area and that helped reduce the clanging startup to about a second. I plan on trying the fuse trick the next time to see if it makes even more difference.
The cheapest way to get the change done is to buy an oil change kit from Suncoast Porsche ($29.99+shipping and you get all factory consumable parts). Then pick up 9 qts of oil. Factory is Mobil 1 0W-40 (European formula). That is what I use but there is another very vigorous debate on the forums about using 5W-40 or 5W-50.
There are 4 drain ports. Two are 8mm hex socket, one is 15mm and one is 19mm. The 19mm bolt is at the end of an aluminum spigot thing. You will need to counter brace the spigot with a 27mm (or 1 1/16") wrench or risk breaking off the spigot. It sounds tricky but it really isn't as bad as it might seem.
You'll get 7-8 qts of oil rushing straight out once you open the 19mm bolt, so have a good sized pan ready. If you're using one of those enclosed oil collection pans, the oil might run over since it can't go down fast enough.
You will also need a 74mm 14 flute oil filter wrench. I bought mine on Amazon after trying to get by with cheap ones from Autozone that sucked.
By far the most annoying part is that the car has no dip stick. Oil readings have to be taken by the computer and it requires the car to be level and warmed up. So add 8 qts of oil, then drive around for a bit, and slowly add in oil a bit at a time until you get full on the meter.
There are quite a few DIYs on rennlist and 6speedonline for various maintenance things and the community in general seems helpful.

It is really not too bad, but does take some specialized tools and over an hour whereas I can change the oil of a regular car in about fifteen to twenty minutes.
Most dry sump oil systems have multiple drains and a lot of capacity. The two 8mm drains are for the turbos.
The real problem is the front transaxle. The fluid is mobil pentilube and can only be bought from dealers in 20 liter containers for $500+. (You need a little over 3 liters)
Sources are all over the map on suitable replacement fluid. I use Red Line 75w90NS for about $60 per gallon. The forum likes to use Mobil Delvac but any I can find is well over $100 per gallon and Delvac says it is for diesel engines and seems thicker for racing purposes.
The other Porsche approved fluid is Shell Transaxle but the only place I can find this is at Ferrari dealerships... People say Shell Spirax S5 is the same but I can only find drums of that. It is a mess and the forum people are very very intense on their choices.
