I'm a little concerned for Hyundai quality since Genesis branched off.
I definitely remember the awkward years in the US market. It's always been a big player in Korea.
As long as they hold the 10yr / 100k warranty.. I'd feel at ease.
I think even NSXNEXT's 5.0 genny needed a transmission replacement at some point.

What pisses me off about Hyundai's warranty is that it is not transferrable, so only the original owner as that warranty. Any owners beyond the first only gets the 4yr/60k unless it is certified.

We owned 2 santa fe's now (07 limited and 09 GLS) and have had ZERO problems with either of them (both driven to about 150k miles). Both took big hits while in out position (07 slipped and hit a curb during icy day, 09 was rear ended) and kept on rocking. Never stranded once, never had oil leaking or anything.

Just upgraded dad from a santa fe to a Veracruz limited and he's absolutely enamoured with it. I heard Hyundai was trying to take down the RX with the veracruz. I never beleived it till I sat in it. Soft touch materials over the entire dash, including glove box lid and all the way down to the pedals. Even have soft touch materials on the sides of the center console wrapping around
the center storage/armrest area (I heven't seen this much soft touch use except on X5's). It has auto dimming rearview and sideview mirrors (both sides) along with rain sensing wipers. Power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, very soft leather seats, cooled center console...etc. Like I'm a picky person when it comes to cars in terms of quality, what I mean is I can easily tell if there was corners being cut. With the Veracruz it is VERY hard to see any cut corners. It has a WAY higher quality interior than my 07 MDX and they both came out around
the same time. The 6 speed auto is also the smoothest transmission I have ever driven, it feels like a CVT. Gear changes are literally smooth as butter. The 3.8l while not posting stout numbers (268hp and 257lb/ft) is incredibly refined, even at 5000-6000 rpms it's very smooth and literally zero clatter or metallic sounds. It's almost electric car-like in operation. Now granted the Veracruz is built in Korea and also was about 60k here, so I'm not surprised that it's as nice as it is. Hope my dad gets many years of happiness and good health with it.

My wife's Elantra GT will probably run forever. It's a really solid car. It's just a little on the cheap side.

I bet the new one is a quantum leap. I wish I could get her a i30 N ... She only drives a stick and would love that car.

Here's a quick rundown of my warranty repairs and maintenance expenses over the past (nearly) six years and 100,000 miles.

Maintenance - $4,848.82

17 oil and filter changes
1 transmission fluid change
1 brake fluid change
4 sets of tires (including factory)
6 sets of windshield wiper inserts
1 set of spark plugs
1 set of front struts
2 sets of KYB rear shocks
2 sets of rear brake pads (see repairs for more on this)
1 battery
3 key fob batteries (primary key twice, spare key once)

As of now at 100,299 miles, the following wear-and-tear items are still original:

- Coolant
- Front brake discs and pads
- Rear brake discs
- Ignition coil packs
- Radiator
- Wheel bearings


Warranty Repairs - Some of these are little things that could have been left alone with no ramifications but I'm easily bugged.

Left fog lamp lens hazing on inside (8,243 miles)
Right front door speaker replaced due to buzzing noise (19,836)
Paint peeled off driver exterior door handle (28,737)
Rear brake calipers dragging (33,624)
Alternator throwing grease from bearing (43,576)
Check engine light came on P2096; dealer reflashed system (50,588)

Stock tires were garbage and were gone by 20k. Second set were Michelins and lasted 30k or so but the longevity of the Pirellis I have now have been skewed by one pair having to be replaced due to a sidewall bubble.

I'm kind of a compulsive downshifter...

Interesting. My stock Michelins lasted 63K on my acura. I replaced with Michelins Primacy again, and at 110k now. I think I can go 140K or so.

I think it has a bit to do with the fact that most Oregon drivers throw studs on on November 1st and run with them until the end of April. As a result our roads are very rough and I think this reduces tire life considerably.
