yea, the volt gets something like 98mpge which is miles per gallon gasoline equivalent. So in a way it is cheaper or its like filling up gas and getting 98 miles per gallon

Yeah, I said it.

The RLX is rumored to have 440 ft*lbs to go with the 370 hp. Now, I know that with a likely 4,000+ lb waist line, it won't be smoking any M5s, BUT when the NSX gets the same drive train but reversed, .

Exactly, the Volt had alot of R&D cost. And this is true for anything, whether it be a B-2 or a NSX. All part of the business plan.

GM all along said it would not make profit on the Volt, they are creating their infrastructure in technology for future vehicles the same Toyota did with the 1G Prius.

The Volt pushed technology further than the Prius and are also riding a wave of media "fail". Most things in the auto press have been fairly positive.

Well yes and no.

Yes b/c they did spend that much on R&D. But no b/c you need to divide it not only by the total number of Volts that will be produced over its lifecycle as a model... but will also need to include total production numbers of any other car that ever uses this technology. Chevy/GM could, should, and likely will use this technology in other products over the upcoming decades... so there may be tens of millions of cars and trucks using what they have learned from this R&D. Need to include those numbers to if you want a "per vehicle" cost.

It's not as simple as dividing the number of Volts sold so far by $1 billion. Not even close...

My wife wants to dump her Highlander for this, a Prius V, or the new Ford C-Max. Just plugging it in is an issue.

Now the losses could be even higher. It costs $60,000 to $75,000 to build a Volt, including development, manufacturing and raw materials, estimates Sandy Munro, president of Munro & Associates, a Troy, Mich., a company that analyzes vehicle production expenses for automakers.

...

[GM] says Munro's estimate is high because it doesn't spread the Volt's costs far enough into the future, when more Volts will be sold. Automakers typically spend $1 billion or more to develop a car, and sometimes don't recoup the investment and start making money until late in its life. Also, Volt technology will be used in future cars and trucks, eventually leading to profits, the company says.

"We're trying to create a market for a brand-new technology," Cain says.

I just priced out the lease for the Volt, holy crap it's cheap!

36 mos in the low 300's, 24/27 mos in the upper 300's. Not bad for a $40k car!

C'mon. Pull your head out and keep the political editorials in R&P.
