prolly more like having access to easy credit and...hey I can 'afford' this monthly payment! Or they lease is under a business and get the tax write off....

Because. Americans. The North American whey.

I looked it over and talked to my sales guy about the Q8 and he basically said it was priced and made for one purpose: to distract the Merc and BMW (X6) buyers for this type of car. Pricing helps add a level of "prestige" to it. So, more power to the buyer, he said.

Same for X6 vs X5 (X4 vs X3 or X2 vs X1)or whatever Mercedes call theirs.
The coupay version is always more expensive for no real reason other than it is supposed to look more sporty because it is less practical.

Oh yah also 8>7, so naturally it should cost more.
That formula does not work on everyone but it works on majority of the people, especially with We see 8, we will pay more just because it is 8.

Bingo.

We had a client last year buy their 2 assistants, matching NXs. Turns out the client was a realtor and the cars were really for the assistants to use to take potential buyers to properties.

Gonna complain to my boss. We get crappy minivans to drive around, and they're not even ours at that. We have to share them like peasants.

Either I get a Q8 to drive around or a sizeable raise, either one works.

I really like the look of the Q8 and when my mom was looking for a new SUV I was going to suggest it until I saw the price difference between it and the Q7. I am with you it is just crazy markup cause it is new almost. Also don't think the newer Q7 looks that great personally. Hopefully, the Q8 won't hold its value well in a few years and can find deals on a CPO one. Till then mom went with an RX350 FSport.

Ask all the people driving around in Teslas these days.

Depends on where you're at.

Where I work (tons of tech companies) I feel like I see more Model S' than similar year 5-series, E-Class, and A6s... combined.

One of the auto news threads shows that Tesla's production is getting right up there with the other big names. The first new relatively successful American automaker in the last century.

My point was that most Teslas are either knocking on $100k or are well past it. I see MANY more $100k cars these days, mostly in the form of a Tesla S or X, than I've ever seen before. This is even in not that affluent of an area where people would routinely pay that much for a car. A run of the mill lease spec (because that's what everyone has lol) E or 5 series is probably around $60k-$65k which is quite a lot less than a Tesla.

On top of the fact that there’s a lot of people just doing rather WELL these days, I also get the impression that over the course of say, 2004-2012 or so there were many people who saved up a buttload of dough just due to matters of economy and markets and such, and basically they got to a point where they were able to treat themselves to a high over-100k dollar purchase. Also factor cost of living into the mix with incomes going up for many over the past decade.

Saving up a ton of dough over the course of a decade only to blow it on a rapidly depreciating asset that they can't actually afford? I'm not sure I buy that.

I think nist's take on it is the likely verdict but who knows.

I think Teslas are capturing a segment of the market that otherwise wouldn't really be "into cars" so to speak.

Tesla is probably really seen as a tech company in some people's eyes and they are really fascinated by its radical take/foray into a new type of automobile and is disrupting the traditional OEMs with the intro of the Model S. So you probably get a lot of young rich millenials who may otherwise not really be into cars get a Tesla as it is different than a dino-burning car. AND you also probably have older guys who are now considering Teslas when they otherwise may have shopped for the usual German/Japanese luxury brand SUV/sedans.

And lot of Tesla fans are really really diehard Tesla fans and they are getting multiple Teslas in their family or convincing their friends/family/neighbors to get one as well.

Not sure about the depreciation of Teslas....but I would imagine something that is changing so quickly due to upcoming tech/changes would depreciate pretty quick but the fact that it is a Tesla probably helps it some....

I didn't give enough background but 5-series and the like were widely prevalent here before the Tesla Model S days. That was kind of my point too, a particular model typically seen as a status symbol in the past is now completely overshadowed by the new hot thing, which is way more expensive than what preceded it.

For comparison, the typical 3-series is like your poseur mobile, or the first car for a new driver.

280hp in an Odyssey does not equate to "fast." Sorry.

Well. I can't hit full throttle in first gear. It's much faster than my TL was.

Timed it to 7.3 seconds to 60, with a delayed launch, a little wheel spin and delayed finish time due to digital speedometer. So, about 6.5 seconds! But it's got a loud vtec and shifts a lot so it feels fast as shit!

Also, the little leaf above the outside temperature gauge is not a symbol for outside, it means eco mode, which I just figured out. Now, it feels ok off the line, not slow as shit like it felt yesterday!

Did you count one one thousand two one thousand or use one mississippi two mississippi ?

Most people (plebs) car shop by the monthly price. What are the terms for a Model S typically? I was told the X runs in the $1,000+ range.

C'mon man, it's a minivan and nothing special at that. The Odyssey only spun its tires because it's FWD.

Speaking of Model S, now that's a fast car. P100D Ludicrous Mode is scary, scary fast. Once you experience torque in quantities that feel like you're welded to the seat, your idea of fast changes.

C&D got a 6.6 to sixty out of an Ody with the 10 spd.

When I was young that was 5.0 Mustang quick.

Fast is relative ... I suppose.

I recall thinking my S2000 was "fast" ... but after owning / building up my B5 and driving an S2000 after a 1 year hiatus.... yeah, it's not fast.

I'm sure if somebody has a 7-800whp car would think the same thing about my S4
