Well, as can be seen in the previous pictures, it has a manual. It's actually just a big multi meter with some specialized inductive clamps. I was really only using it as a tachometer as this truck isn't equipped with one. I have a smaller hand held tach/dwell meter somewhere, but this is easier to read.
Oh, and just for you. I went and took some pictures yesterday before you asked.
I looked for a real shift knob with the right pattern and shaft size for a week, but finally gave up and bought the ubiquitous parts house 8 ball.
Really, this thing needs one of everything, but I like it more than I care to admit.

Just some rat killing. The Frontier was staying at a family members house to make it look occupied, also I needed it gone while I was working on those other projects. Anyway It's been about 8 months and it needed some upkeep.
(it still needs upkeep... like the hood and bumpers need to be painted, but it's going to have to wait till the crappy Nissan paint starts to flake off)
Another headlight restore, I never did one with a sealing kit on this truck and you could barely see at night.
It's getting old enough where awesome parts like the fake plastic nuts that cover the real plastic rivets start to just come off on their own, don't mind the keyed bit. I bought it like that.
May as well paint a few. I know I'm going to need them and you can't buy them body colored anymore.

Then I went to open the tail gate and broke the leaver immediately.
Transferred the lock and ordered a new badge. I also re adjusted the tailgate so you can just lightly put it in place again instead of slamming it.
I have a couple other parts coming like a few peices of plastic trim, some bumper paint for the rear bumper (seen in primer and rust above). I also went through the interior and replaced the 3 cracked pieces with the ones I scored at the junk yard. It may be my shop truck, but I still don't want to to fall underneath me.
I don't put a film on it, but that may help protect against rocks.
This is a cheap sylvania kit I've only been using since 03-11 (on the black xterra). They use a sealant that I think is just a lacquer but makes it easy to get good results. Takes about a day to dry before you can wash it and a few hours before you can go down the highway. I won't know how it is for another couple years really, but so far it's holding up better than just buffing the headlights like I used to do.
I always think I'll just come up with my own kit and keep the stuff ready to go, but I never do and end up buying this same kit again.
The kit consists of a cleaner that smells a lot like ammonia, like more than window cleaners.
quarter sheets of 600, 1000, 2000 grit wet-or-dry sand paper (oddly from two different manufacturers)
plastic polishing compound... looks like the 3m stuff I have somewhere
sealant that looks and smells like lacquer.
steps are
clean the lenses with soap and water
clean with the provided ammonia smelling cleaner
sand starting coarsest to smoothest
polish
clean with cleaner
clean with water
let dry completely
apply sealant
All of that is easy enough to get.
So some 3m sandpaper (5 sheets each)

Bottle of amonia based cleaner (this would need to be tried on a junk yard light first to see if it cleans as well. )

I don't know, but I have that all somewhere already, but you can go get a can of good pre mixed clear at any paintshop for 20 dollars.
I've bought 3 of these headlight kits at 15.99, but the price is now 19.99.
So... you would need to have 4 cars around for that to make sense. Only 3 of mine have plastic lenses.
I borrowed my mom's family trickster to do the brakes, change the fluids, and install some suspension bushings. I also made a small list of things that apparently weren't mentioned by the infiniti dealer during the airbag recall (or by my mom who drives it every day). It's going to need a right front headlight mechanism (auto leveler is hosed), passenger side window regulator (automatically goes up, but doesn't stop and comes back down), and the driver's side mirror mechanism. Annnd the tires are bald... and it's gonna need a new rear bumper cover? At least she stopped soaking her seats in coffee.
Whatever infiniti did with their exhaust in the mid 2000's was great though. This thing sounds much meaner than it is.

Back in Mexico for a day. Had time to remove the craptacular air intake then go play in the dirt.
Removal of that terrible hiss sound. I think it may be okay on a manual and it's okay when you floor it ,but with a auto at part throttle (basically all the time) it just sounds silly. Oh and that air filter loves to collapse on itself. I'm sure it could stand to be cleaned, but a paper filter will do better than a clean oil filter in the sand anyway. Oh and the bolt in the end is my modification, when the car came to me it had a 3/4 inch hole in the end of the filter... ok.
I don't have a huge issue with the intake itself, but power raid's mounting setup is idiotic. I mean it's just this bent up piece of aluminum that doesn't really keep air from the engine out. The way they mounted it is with tiny electric motor mounts. These keep motors from making things vibrate, like on a fluid pump. They have no real shear strength and using them in something that is constantly getting pushed and pulled by the rest of the intake just seems a bit stupid.
So the intake is loose, big deal, Oh it's made of rigid aluminum and not formed in a way that would keep it from, lets say, digging into the high side of the AC lines. Classic cheap part causing expensive problem scenario. Luckily it didn't break through, but that's not something I'm going to be able to just swap out in this little village.
Whatever, now it's back to stock. I'll miss having a 182hp v6 instead of a 180hp v6. I don't know if that little red spacer does anything, but other than making it slightly harder to change the air filter it doesn't seem like it's going to cause a issue.
Also about 7 to 8k was spent on the interior... in pesos, which is about 400 dolllars. That is a new rug, headliner, rear bench, and front buckets. He even threw in a dash mat. The materials aren't a perfect match, but it beats the smell and the cigarette burns. Also when the P.O. removed the install the cut up the carpet to do it, it was trashed.
With that I'm actually done this time, till it needs new tires. I'll probably have to take it back to the states for that and may as well do another little project at that time.

intake spacer that thing put so much pressure on my stock intake on the TL that it broke 2 of them.
at this point, I don't even mess with cold air intakes except for my CTS-V but that's to hear the whine.

Or somebody should have, I haven't had the black x far that long or driven it that far. I'm guessing it never had it's 60k non essential but recommended fluid service. I didn't think it was shifting hard, but after doing the 3 drain and fill method it's butter smooth.

I took a road that is usually fine, but the end of it was a mud bog. "Oh no we weren't close to being stuck". It was totally close to being stuck when I had to stop and turn around. I have a hand winch, but you will notice the lack of trees.
They totally make that, Both as an anchor and a huge parashoot you bury. They also make shovels and all I had was a entrenching tool. I also was only driving the one car as the rest of that trail gets really narrow and is overgrown. If we were any further away from the house I would have worried about it, but I can run the 4 miles back and get the other car if need be. That is also why I don't have any pictures of me driving these cars on the beach. I have all the time in the world to get un stuck on these trails, but the tide can come get you on the beach.
Scored a SchrockWorks Rear bumper for the 2nd gen when I was in Phoenix today. Usually they are around 550 shipped with powder coat. Got this for 250. The shackle mounts are nice, though I have a shackle hitch adapter. What I really wanted it the integrated hitch, That should give it quite a bit more rear departure angle.
Installing the bumper. Had I built this it would have been out of quarter inch everything and it would weigh a million lbs. That is the difference between me and somebody that can maths.
The most important part I always forget is to pressure wash the underside before you use the impact gun. RIP my eyes.

My license plate frame doesn't fit because of the hitch and I will have to get a new backup camera mounted. Those are easy. You can see my non matching spare much better now and it just barely clears the rear anti roll bar, I can see why the guy I bought this from upgraded to a swing out tire carrier when he got larger tires.
Very nice, I thought it looks a little plain in the first shots, but with the trim capping the ends, it works really well.
The rear bumper is odd on xterras, and it's hard to replace those caps without making something that is more likely to mess up the body when you hit it off road.
My friend brought over his 06 to do the rear shocks, front struts, springs, upper and lower control arms, a few bushings, and front axles last week. I can't hear him coming down the street anymore.
I think he's had his since new. 6 speed, off road, and not black. I kinda wish I had bought one, but most of them in my price range were in the same shape as his (it's probably as much time off road as on road).
Oh and if you ever see a Nissan with the big goofy Nissan letters and horsey stickers on the side, It's probably from thoroughbred Nissan out of Tucson. They also like their weird pin stripes.

Well I think the affordable fixer upper nsx market ship has sailed. Also, what can I say about the German stuff. I don't mention it much because my current stable is just a grave yard a failure.
The 2002... I would rather not talk about. It's still in my mom's back yard. Every time I see it I get a little depressed.
It had rust and a lot of led/bondo when I got it, but the modifications I made to the interior were pure teenage stupidity. I should just sell it for parts and buy one that has straight panels to do right. It's like 8th in line as far as car projects. go.
The thing... is still in pieces. I drive it around in highschool and college but it would never align right. I always knew that the ride height was wrong because of the beetle axle, but no matter what I did it always dog tracked and wore out the front tires after a few thousand miles.
Turns out the front end was entirely made of bondo, and the frame isn't quite straight.
So I bougtht a 2nd thing. It had no engine or tansmission, but it's front end is ... ok and unlike mine it's all stock. It has some extra front end sheet metal thrown in. Convertable top parts, VWNA roll bar, VWNA hard top, and two sets of window frames. Both of them are sitting covered up in the back of the shop lot. I would say they are like 5th in line.
The e38 I made a thread about before... ate it's 2nd rebuilt transmission. Sold it off for scrap.
I mean I was keeping it to do road trips, but after two attempts to get a rebuilt transmission I was kinda over it. The only other option would have been to buy a BMW rebuilt transmission and that would have been twice the value of the car.
Uh, The only other thing I have that is German right now is the sand rail, and it's mostly rail right now. I hope to finish it after my truck that is in the hot rod thread.
I mainly bought it because it was less than then bus trans axle that came in it. It needs a little work to run, but a lot of work to be good.

The P.O. had swapped the 2.8 for a 3.5 and it was kinda quick. It looked great too. Until sunrise.
Those seats are from a civic. On a old car like this the rain gutter is where the roof it welded on. This car had the rain gutter shaved and the roof was held on by bondo. Springs were cut. It went pretty fast at full throttle but didn't idle great. When I went to rebuild the carbs (dual two barrel Weber) I realized somebody had boiled the hell out of them to clean them and they were too warped to salvage. Sold that to a scrap yard. When I drove up with it they recognized it...
That's it for stuff that is mine, as far as stuff I maintain goes. It's mostly been sold.
The e60. It was my dad's replacement for the e38. At 90k miles the transmission was replaced by bmw, and the entire AC system.
I liked that car, but my dad's health was failing and it was hard for him to get in and out of. That is when I found the fx35 for him. I had only replaced a few things on the suspension after the warranty went out, but around 108k miles the i-drive unit took a dump and I was just completely infuriated that they would make it impossible to mess with certain hvac settings without the use of the stereo. I bought a bmw reman idrive stack through a friend's commercial account, but I still couldn't save much money because it had to be programmed to the car after the installation. I tried, but because of the transmission being repaired the cracked Russian version of the diagnostic whatever I found on the internet wouldn't take. Not a fan of paying somebody book time to push buttons.
That was the last chance for the 550. Oh and I'm the only person that didn't take a chunk out of those stupid TSW wheels on a curb.

Nothing super bad happened to it, but every time I did have to replace something the front of the car had to come off. The picture below is after it was sold to her nieghbor's kid. Don't sell cars to friends. Anyway it's since been totaled.

I work on it now and then. Tune up's and Electrical gremlins. Mostly for beer money and being able to drive it around and pretend I didn't ruin mine as a kid. The sad thing is it's not a original chromix white car. It's supposed to be Taiga green. Somebody in it's life decided to do a 100 dollar Macco paint job and change that.
OH, I fixed the billboard truck too once, but it's a Mitsubishi, so not german.

Back up on the lift to tighten down the bolts that rattled loose on the trail. It was starting to sound like the frontier for a minute.
I also decided to hook the rear camera up while I was at it. The old 15 dollar camera was tucked in with the license plate indent. Had to get one that would mount flat .
I think all 15 dollar cameras are the same. They do okay, it would be cool if there were a aftermarket option that did the hd 360 view the cool guy luxury cars have. I would think that rock crawlers would love that.
Frontier nearly bought the big one... I mean even if it just took out the fender pretty much any level of damage would total it out at this point. The guy had stopped about 3/4 of the way into my lane when I looked back.
Also, the time code resets itself to 6 months before the truck was made, so that's useful.
