Ford to recall more than 1.5 million SUVs
Potential problems with automatic cruise controls and seat recliners have prompted Ford Motor Co. to recall more than 1.5 million Ford Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers made over the past five years.
Beginning in early September 2003, Ford will notify owners of the affected vehicles about the recall. However, you can contact your local dealer or Ford immediately at 866-436-7332 to determine whether your vehicle is subject to the recall.
One recall involves 1999 to 2001 Explorer, Explorer Sport, and Mountaineer models, and 2001 Explorer Sport Tracs--about 500,000 vehicles in all. All have a 4.0-liter V-6 engine and optional cruise-control systems. According to Ford, the company has received reports from consumers that the cruise control may not disengage completely when you step on the brake or switch off the system. That could increase the risk of an accident. A cable that wears out prematurely may be to blame. A Ford spokesman advises consumers to avoid using the cruise control until the dealer replaces the speed-control cable, which will be done at no charge. You will still be able to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal, the spokesman said.
The other recall involves approximately 1.6 million 1998 to 2001 Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers, and 2001 to 2002 Explorer Sport and Sport Trac models with high-back seats. With those vehicles, a bolt that attaches the seat to the back could fracture and cause the seatback to recline suddenly and unexpectedly, possibly resulting in loss of vehicle control. Ford says it has received reports of looseness and noise in the reclining mechanism, which may signal potential trouble. SUVs found to have this problem with be outfitted with new recliner seatback bolts at no charge.
No accidents or injuries have been reported in relation to either the cruise-control or seatback problem. Dealerships should have the necessary replacement parts by late August or early September 2003, the Ford spokesman said.
I ripped this from Consumer Reports. That's what you get for buying an SUV
