ford detuned the 2005 mustang gt

i don't have a camera w/ me right now but my coworker who just got a 2005 mustang gt pulled a friggen metal tube 2 inches long by 3 inch wide w/ a plastic honeycomb in it out of the AIR INTAKE.
it was sitting right inside the intake tube to restrict the air.

after the removal the throttle was much more responsive. i'll try to snap some pics later.

The honeycomb is there probably to measure the amount of air entering more efficiently. Like a MAS (Mass Air Sensor).

I just reread. if it was in the intake then yeah id say it was an air restrictor. I have seen them as a honeycomb shape before. just a thicker clyinder with a smaller opening.

Stock cars use them to try and keep everyone on a level playing field.

He needs to put it back in!!! The car will run VERY lean without it. You must get a comp. tune if its taken out!! Ford made this car's computer a bitch, with any intake mod you will need an aftermarket tune.

He needs to check out some 05 GT boards

I have one on order and been doing loads of research on it

"We dynoed an '05 Mustang yesterday and pulled the filter before starting tuning. It went from about 12:1 a/f to 13.5:1 a/f. Way too lean. It lost power with this mod before tuning. After correcting the a/f, I think it helped hp."

taken from a thread.

arguments both ways, but its not worth the 4 hp gain.

I think if Ford was to restrict the power of a car, surely they would find other ways than restricting airflow.

Your friend is okay. If you read up, that is a hydrocarbon trap. It is nothing but an emissions control device that traps hydrocarbons upon shutting the engine off. Numerous people have taken theirs off and it is good for nearly 4 rwhp.

Sounds like typical Ford to me. I had other Fords that had the same thing.

I will be taken mine out AFTER I get my tune. Plan on doing intake, pullies, and hydrocarbon trap. Before the tune I just dont know if I would take the chance with the car running too lean. Thats just me though

The MMR intake makes the engine run rich, which is perfectly safe. You might lose a bit of power.
