Florida to Ban Radar Detectors or At Least Try

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/01/f...dar-detectors/

A bill has been filed in the Florida Legislature that would ban the use of radar detectors in Florida. The measure has the support of the Florida Highway Patrol. Several other states have passed similar measures.

Nice. I love the reasoning in that it promotes speeding.

More like levels the playing field, even though the PoPo will always be ahead in the arms race.

Although Va and DC currently prohibit radar detectors, I have to wonder about the constitutionality of banning any radio receiver. If this passes, I would do in Florida what I do with my detector in Va: relocate it to a more inconspicous (and likely less effective) location on my windshield.

That said, I speed with/without my detector all the time without incident.

IF Ny tries this, they'll have to pry my V1 out of my cold dead hands

Wow I'm searching for confirmation to this. It still has to pass if it is indeed accurate. This sucks!

ok so yeah it's correct,
The civil penalty could range from $115 to $125

Having any "speed-measuring device detectors or jammers" would be a non-criminal, secondary offense -- which means police could not stop a driver just for that. But once a motorist is stopped for speeding or some other infraction, an officer seeing a radar detector could write a second ticket.

bill will be considered by state lawmakers during the two-month legislative session, which convenes next week.

Radar detectors have been illegal here in New Brunswick for probably 15 years or so.

If they stiffened up the fines that would help better. 95% of cars I see speeding do not have RD's. And I'd bet if the former trooper that is bringing this out that claims speeding is causing more accidents would look at every spec of debris from those wrecks no RD would be found.
So I'm confused how banned detectors would help any.

If the FL gov. wanted to really make a difference they should stiffen fines & enforcement for red light runners. That's a WAY bigger problem down here. I see at least 15 cars a day run red lights. And most of the them not questionable yellow, but solid red.

Couldn't agree with you more... when I go down to FL over spring break and summer to visit my grandparents I see people run lights down there ALL the time, they even have 6 seconds to get through with most lights. We only have 3 where I live. People in FL also tend to not use their blinkers when changing lanes or making turns, mostly lane changing. I'm just glad its not like that here up in KS.

A radar detector is not a free pass to speed. Yeah you will get caught eventually. However your chances are much higher you won't if you have a quality 1 & know how to use it.

A lot of people say they don't work, & what not cause they are bitter they got a ticket.
Either from a cheap RD, not using it right, or just plain dumb luck.

Aren't pretty much most law enforcement agencies switching over to laser guns instead of radar? Radar detectors can't detect laser at all, and radar/laser detectors only detect laser when its too late.

A little off topic, but it might get merged anyway. I'm in CA and was thinking about getting a V1. Should I or not? I don't speed at all, but the times when I do I sure as hell wouldn't want to get a ticket for it.

I think they're calling it the "Shooting Fish In A Barrel Bill".

Guess I'll have to get all my FL speeding in when I drive down in May.

I've done a lot of traveling around the country the last few years. Laser is still pretty darn rare. Most are still using radar, but a lot of instant on ka band.

If you are on a crowded road and a cop is using laser you still have a change of catching it before it's too late. But, on an empty road you are screwed.

Give it a try, it's a great tool. I've found radar use is a lot more prevelent in Northen CA then southern.

Just out of curiousity............ if they do not work why do they want to ban them.............. mmmmmmmmm?? Sounds to me like they do work and Florida knows it.

I live in Germany and in general they are banned here but who cares, our radio stations provide to the minute updates where the Coppers are hiding out. :-P
