F-250 knocks down million-mile marker after only four years

Anybody else hoping he keeps the car for another mil? He's got a clear shot of breaking the record for most miles on one car, ever.

It's not the fact that it actually made 1,000,000 miles, but the fact that he did it in such a short time.
I think the record-holder for most mileage on a car is something like 2.8 million on an old Volvo. It took forty years for the Volvo to accrue that mileage.

Awesome but that's actually not the first time I've heard of a digital odometer refusing to pass 999,999. Apparently they just stop counting up when they get there and it requires replacement of the cluster.

I worked a on a IC controller chip proposal for VDO on the electronic instrument cluster the CTS. I vaguely remember the requirement from VDO was for the odometer was a million miles and to hold 999999 once reached.

I dont think any vehicle would have a problem doing that many miles in that short of a time (given to this same driver) HWY miles are the single best miles for the vehicle and the easiest on it)
That said it is impressive what was accomplished in that short of a time.

The current Mercedes-Benz High Mileage champ is Gregorios Sachinidis, a Greek taxi driver who holds the known record of more than 2.8 million miles in his 1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D.

I'm guessing it's just a lot of 2-3 day trips with probably more than 15 hours of road time.

This may be the car that you're thinking of (a Mercedes).

Hmm, maybe, I could've sworn it was a P1800 or something though, driven by a teacher.

Slowing the Pace in Recent Years
Through the late '90s and early part of this decade, Gordon had been driving at a near fanatical pace of well over 100,000 miles per year, peaking in March 2002 when he gained worldwide attention for turning two million miles while driving down Broadway in Times Square. Today, to reach his next milestone, he is allowing a more conservative pace of 80,000 miles per year.

Damn, lol.

The career driver claims his four-year maintenance bill is a cool $67,000.

Tractor trailers do similar amounts of driving. He basically does the same thing but uses an F-250 instead.
685 miles a day is about 9.3 hours of driving a day averaging 75mph, which is a reasonable calculation and reasonable work hours.
Not really, when you're doing that kind of driving, selling a 1 year old truck with 250,000 miles on it is worth nothing. The depreciation on 4 cars over the span of four years would add up to more than a $67,000 maintenance bill.

What isn't reasonable is averaging 75mph for 9.3 hours, 7 days a week. That's excessive speeding in many areas and doesn't take into account areas you have to slow down. On top of that you have to take into consideration vehicle maintenance, eating, rest stops, etc. When you think about everything involved, it's quite mind-boggling. I guess I should've checked the link, but were there multiple drivers involved?

There had to have been multiple drivers for a car to rack up this much mileage in this little time

The reason he isn't replacing the truck is because it is heavily modified to transport greyhounds. His sons also take turns driving so it's not the same person driving all the time.
Not using diesel?
Though there MUST be a more efficient way to transport those dogs.
