Its not NYC that's upstate, there is no NYMA indicator on the registration and it has an upstate inspection sticker- so this happened north of westchester.

As much as it sucks, a lot of upstaters drive porsche's year round and it is- and it hurts to say this- just a car, imagine of someone had been walking under there when that fell!

No it just means that the car is under 2 years old. I have that sticker on my windshield. Because the first 2 years it is only a visual inspection and doesn't need to be put on the machine.

Well, if it's an under 2 years old porsche, it's a $70K car... the early 996's are dipping down into the low $30's....

That's irrelevant, there is still no NYMA indicator above the VIN on the registration, that's upstate- or at least the car is registered upstate.

I think I know what you are trying to point out, but it could also be very faint as it is on mine.

Brings back terrible memories of when that happened to my CLS. There was no garage available to park in though. Shattered the rear window, dented the roof, scratches, snow + ice in the back seat. $3.5k in damages. It sucked.

I had to pay the deductible ($500). I could of went after the landlord and tried to get her homeowner's insurance to pay it, but I didn't want to go through the hassle.

We do not know if that was once a single piece of ice which broke up on impact. Regardless, when compared to the wheel, some of those peices are at least four cubic feet; or about 30 gallons. Even with a small percenage of air trapped I would assume the weight would be upwards of 200+ lbs for some of the larger individual pieces. This is just quick math but a quick estimate of this mass falling off a roof could exceed 9000 lbs. Certainly enough to cause that damage.

I was thinking the same thing when I looked at the ice.

ya, I bet your right on. Water is about 7-8lbs per gallon (I believe). Been so long since I've had to measure a gallon I'm sure some website has the weight...

Yea, it is about 8 pounds per gallon. The question would be how much air is trapped and that can vary significantly. Even at 50% the forces of a 15 foot drop would be devastating.

FYI, its not a few years old- its inspection is due in 2005, so its less then a year old.

Edit: Looked at the sticker again and it was inspected in April of 04, I live in NY and don't recall a snow storm that would generate that much ice after april in 04. That damage is fresh and happened this winter season(of 04/05).

Okay that's al little hard to swallow. Those ice chunks look terribly large to accumulate on a roof top. Look at the snow on the roof of the garage, it definitely does not look like ice blocks. This is definitely a insurance scam.
