Ever seen an M5 go 200mph on a public road?

If he thought it was worth risking his drivers license or possibly his life to do that, hopefully he got it out of his system and wont do it again. I'll admit to similar recklessness once or twice when I was in my early 20's. (I distinctly remember taking my old Eagle Talon up to 140 mph on I-5 one time and yeah it was mad stupid.) You'd think someone who could afford an M5 would be older and wiser though. Not always apparently.

sadly having money these days doesnt mean they had to be smart to earn it =/

i would advocate natural selection for this one but sadly because he is driving the car he is putting others at risk with his stupidity as well.

you can get a used V10 M5 for around 35-40 grand. thats G37/TL money, which generally speaking lowers the average age of an M5 driver.

I think your buddy is a moron. If he think's he is badass or something like that. go take on real race car drivers on a track.

The only public road I ever do over 100 mph on is the Autobahn. And even above certain speeds, you will be at fault in an accident.

Why does nobody complain when somebody goes 200mph on a public autobahn in Germany? Many things could go wrong...a pothole, a bump, an animal, etc. The fact is the driver made the choice to go that speed, so he will reap the consequences whatever they may be.

The "injuring somebody else" argument would only be valid if you couldn't injure somebody else when losing control going under 60mph.

For starters, it's actually LEGAL to drive at those speeds in Germany. Also, drivers over there are trained and actually know how to drive at those speeds and as the roads are far better maintained. Did you know that the Autobahn has a 24" roadbed thickness where as the US Interstate is only 12"? Also, if a crack or pothole appears in the surface of the Autobahn, it isn't filled. That entire section roadway is ground up and completely resurfaced.

People in this country don't have the driving discipline and training it takes to have a road like the Autobahn. I'm seriously convinced most Americans think the Autobahn is a giant racetrack where everybody tries to see who can go the fastest where in truth it's about control and precision; not breaking the law and posting it on the Internet for everybody to see what a giant dumbfuck you are.

I am aware of how the autobahn works. I lived there for more than 3 years. In Europe, the build 20 and 30 year roads, here they build 5 year roads because our taxpayer dollars get squandered on other bs. (But that's another thread).

While it is "legal" to drive what speed you wish (on most parts of the autobahn), insurance WILL NOT cover you if you crash above 130kph, so YOU assume resposibility for your choice.

The legality of the driver's actions is the issue? Then anybody who has ever sped has NO place talk. Anybody who has ever sped is a giant douche because they could have hit a pothole and lost control and injured somebody. Sanctimonious at best, IMO.

but the difference is... at the Autobahn people go in there knowing what to expect... (by this, I mean the other people). Where as the road in the video, other people don't know, and most likely wouldn't have time to react.

It's like the difference between base jumping at places designated FOR base jumping vs base jumping off random high rises in the city, where you might land on someone.

AS I guess you know, the quality of the road is vastly superior, especially compared to NYC-area freeway. FAR more risky in NYC than the German autobahn.

General driver competence, awareness and lane discipline is, imho, the second biggest reason.

And, yes, legality is also a factor.

If you guys believe the autobahns are without potholes and bumps, you are sadly misinformed. Just like here, there are good stretches and bad stretches. But that's neither here nor there since the driver assumes responsibility for his or her actions. Unlike here where thedriver would blame the pothole instead of their decision to drive fast.

As far as competency, who are we say who is and isn't competent? Would you be ok with Mario Andretti going 200mph on a public roads?

Incompetent driver need to be responsible for their own actions. It's futile trying to save them from themselves.

did you even read my post? I couldn't careless about idiots like this... it's the OTHER PEOPLE that matters. It could be me. What if YOU're about turn into that road, and he comes hauling ass @200mph... I bet you anything you'd be pissed as hell. I'm just looking at it from a everyday scenario. If I was crossing the street and some asshat come hauling ass, maybe not necessarily 200mph... but fast enough that it puts me or other people in danger, that's what matters.

I happen to look before I turn onto a road. I ride a motorcycle too, and I pay VERY close attention to the other drivers, as any good driver should. Are you implying that you wouldn't be pissed if somebody smashed into while not speeding?

okay then... so by your rationale... why da fuck do we even have speed limits then? In fact why do we have laws at all?

and btw... @200mph? You AND the idiot driver have very little time to react. I can't tell you how many times I've changed lanes when it was clear... but someone going over 100mph-120mph was in that lane, I didn't know they were going that fast... through their eyes, I cut them off... but I didn't. I was doing MY part, I looked and at the time when I looked it was safe to change lanes

Not too smart, are you. I look before pulling out too but I'm expecting a car traveling up to 70mph, not 200mph. At 200mph, if I can barely see him off in the distance and I pull out, he's going to hit me before either of us can react. By the time you see something in front of you, you have just enough time to think oh shit much less react and then slow the car down. I've legally been north of 180mph in a street car and you have to start changing lanes the second you can see an obstruction on the horizon to have a chance at missing it.

Honestly, traveling at that speed is a lot like driving in dense fog. You're concentrating as far ahead as you can and you know you have to react immediately if anything comes into view only cars do funny things at that speed, even cars made to go that fast.

Let's think about how many feet a car can slide, flip, or fly through the air at 200mph. More than enough to take out 30 or more cars coming the other direction.

Speed limits are most definitely frivolous. Their only purpose is revenue for the municipalities.

I understand the amount of ground being covered at 200mph and the reaction times needed.

I just don't understand why people are getting so butt hurt about the video. If the driver said he was on the autobahn, nobody would have said he's a douche. Which means that everybody is calling him a douche for something we've all done (speeding).

There's a HUGE difference between me going 10-15mph over speed limit and this guy doing 200mph. And if you're going to say "No there isn't" then I think you're an idiot

Im having a hard time understanding how you think there is a double standard for this.

Its one thing if he was doing 90 on a public road. Thats still wreckless driving, but Im sure all of us have done that. The difference is he was going well over 3 times the posted limit on that stretch of road, during twilight, with a passenger telling him what to expect.

On the Autobahn you expect drivers to speed. The licensing is much more stringent and people actually understand the rules of the road. Here, you take a quick test and you can go out and pilot a 2 ton missile.

The road he was on is not a proper highway in the sense you may be thinking. There are sand dunes blocking your view, two lanes each way, and many bumps/pot holes. There are houses on that road that dont have a proper on-ramp. They just turn and merge, thats it. They are expecting cars to be travelling around 60mph, not 200.

The "its ok because everyone does it" attitude is null. What parallels can you draw between him and most of the driving public? Do you normally drive north of 150mph on a two lane highway with limited sight distance not knowing what may or may not be around the next bend and relying on a co-driver to let you know when to lift? The guy has no idea what hes doing, other then hes got a 500hp car and a right foot that can control the gas pedal.

I remember years ago when I was still living in New York there was a mother pushing a stroller that was killed by cars that may or may not have been racing. Is that simply "ok" because everyone has done it? People arent allowed to be outraged by it?

If this guy had any shred of a brain, he would have gone down to Texas and taken part in the Texas Mile. Im sure he'd still prefer to have his passenger in the car to let him know when to brake though.

Then again I get pissed off when people drive over 20mph down my block, so maybe Im just crotchety.

Buddy, I lived in Germany for over 10 years. I brought it up because the roads are good to very good, but the important point is the drivers are very different. If you remember, drivers there are about 99% predictable. And that makes a world of difference.

Yes, liability is with you once over 130kph, but if you are going to do it on a public road, it's the only one I trust. Try the A9 from Nurnburg to Munich. 3 lanes of excellent paving.

And good point RLP: The road quality is different.

If I got pulled over for going 10-15mph over speed limit, I get a ticket, maybe even just a warning if I'm lucky. If I got nailed for going 200mph, you think I'll just get a ticket?

Ok because everyone does it? I never said that. I said that it is hypocritical to bash somebody for speeding when we've all done it. Too, it is a double standard to say it's ok to go 200mph on an autobahn "because the roads are better", since it is unlikely that it would be ok here if the roads were the same. Additionally, at 200mph on an autobahn the same things that make this driver a douche over here could happen over there (bump in the road, driver making a lane change not expecting a 200mph car, etc), thus adding to the double standard.

If the driver's competence is the issue, does that mean it would be ok for Emerson Fittipaldi to drive 200mph on a public road?

I'm not saying that I would go 200mph on a public road or that anybody should, I am simply disagreeing with the double standards.

You are free to be outraged at what you wish, but being outraged at something that could have happened is rather irrational.

Maybe you are an idiot

It's ok to speed if you just get a ticket, but not ok to speed if the punishment may be more than a ticket? Doesn't make much sense.

I'm and idiot because I don't agree with you? ok.

you're such a genius, then explain why the cops would haul you're ass in jail for doing 200mph vs writing you a ticket for going 10mph over speed limit. But I guess every law enforcement in the country are wrong and you're right

I guess the basis of my argument is this:

I dont care who is behind the wheel of the speeding vehicle. When they are driving in that nature on a road that generally does not see those speeds, thats where I take issue.

You expect those speeds from people on the Autobahn. The other motorists understand this and know to share the road.

However, granny may be sitting in the left lane on Ocean Pkwy doing 50mph and not even realize that this douche has a 150mph closing speed on her.

Im not trying to portray myself as a saint either. Ive done 140mph before, on a highway, in NY. It was one of the stupidest things Ive done behind the wheel of a car. Luckily I recognized that before something truly bad happened.

Theres a time and a place for those speeds. Ocean Pkwy at twilight is not one of them.

The difference between most people who speed is that most of them are doing it to go with the flow of traffic (assuming its an 80 mph speed limit or under). Going 10-15 over the speed limit is DEFINITELY not the same as going 135 over the speed limit (I'm guessing it was 65 in the vid) especially on a public road.

Honestly, I don't even know why this discussion is taking place. YES, speeding enforcement is there for revenue generation, absolutely. But given the general reputation of drivers in America, I definitely see a point to speed limits. Last thing I want to see is some jackass texting at 100mph.

Speed limits don't make drivers smarter nor do they stop people from speeding.

I don't deny that US drivers are generally shitty, but that doesn't mean we need somebody to protect us from ourselves.

Okay....since you seem so gung-ho about there being a huge double-standard, go out to your local interstate, drive 125 mph past a State Trooper and use this as your defense. We'll talk again when you get out of jail, whenever that might be.

This so cut-and-dry I don't know why you've got all this sand in your vagina.

200 mph on Long Island Expressway = Illegal and dangerous because nobody is expecting it.
200 mph on Unrestricted German Autobahn = Legal w/proper training and licensing and (fairly safe) because people are expecting it.

Insurance liability has NOTHING to do with it.
