Dodge Charger R/T 5.7 L , Mustang GT Premium 5.0, or Wait for 2021 Acura TLX?
My 2008 TL-S is nearing the end. 190,000 miles, and expensive repairs every few months. Eyeing the Charger 5.7 R/T, Mustang GT Premium, or trying to have the patience (if my car lasts) to wait it out for the 2021 Acura TLX. Like to see comments, and points. Thanks.

Mustang of the offered choices.
Stinger GT2 for an off-poll option.

My vote goes towards the Mustang.
If you're looking for a 4 door .. 2013-2018 S4.
Can't really beat the reliability & aftermarket unless you spending F80+ M3 money.
Side thought .. I would never hold out for Acura making a performance car on time that meets expectations unless you're shopping for an NSX.

Why not the Scat Pack with the 6.4L SRT Hemi? It's only an extra $4K (less with incentives) for an extra 115HP and Brembos. With the whole $10/HP factory cash incentive Dodge is offering, that $4K suddenly drops to less than $3K given the extra power the Scat Pack offers.

If those are the choices I'd say get a Mustang but get one that's ever so slightly used. They depreciate like crazy unless you're into GT350 territory.

I can relate a bit as I also had an Acura sedan and was about to move to a '19 5.0 Premium. I believe it's confirmed that the new Type S will have a 3.5T or 3.5TT and the concept does look very good but I wanted a coupe so didn't have interest in a sedan and didn't want to wait till 2021/2022. I ended up in a TTS (https://acurazine.com/forums/car-tal...en-tts-982026/). I liked the 5.0 and was close to buying but wasn't sold on the build quality and the size of the car. I'd take a look at the TTS or if you need something bigger, a Golf R/S3. I just did Stage 2 but on Stage 1 the previous owner draggy'd a 3.5 0-60 and 11.8 1/4 time. I've tracked the car at MSR houston and did some very competitive lap times and it's very easy to manage with the size/weight. B9 S4s are also putting out 550tq on E85 with the new APR tunes and are starting to depreciate into the low 40s. My vote is for something European, but out of the 3 you listed I would do the 5.0.

After discounts, you can get almost 500hp for $35K. Can't get more MOPAR than that. The car sounds glorious, and it's eminently comfortable. Great highway cruiser, it's massive, and very quick. Mid-12s in a car that weighs over two tons and has the aerodynamics of brick.

My brother loves his Charger R/T. My only gripe with the car is the weird texture they use on the dash panel. I liked driving it, felt much lighter than I imagined it would.

Having been through that with a small(ish) 2-door coupe (with more space than the Mustang), I would strongly recommend a 4-door car. I will now vote for the Charger.

I say this as a fan of the TLX concept....
Buy a Charger of the choices on your list. Enjoy V8 torque while you are awaiting the gremlins to be killed in the new TLX.
Also, Stinger GT should be on your radar even though it’s not on your list above. In GT2 format, it’s a fast, comfortable, luxurious car. I almost bought one recently, but ended up in a manual Accord 2.0t instead. Shocked the shit out of myself with the choice, but it’s been a good ride.

I also have added the Camaro SS to the list. I love the new TLX, but cannot afford it new. I have to buy a used car , GT 5.0 Mustang, Dodge Charger, or Camaro SS. Will be 2018 or 2019 used.
No Visibility and no back seat in Camaro SS, but I still want to test drive....
Mustang GT has beautiful coyote engine, but I wish for a better interior and too many Mustangs on the road...
Dodge Charger too big a car....
Camaro SS, beautiful car, and ride, manual transmission...
Mustang GT, beautiful engine and sound, manual transmission...
Dodge Charger, fast as lightning, sounds great, very comfortable drive and suspension....automatic only

Go test drive them. only you will be able to make the decision between those three cars...
for me; I'd pick a '15 Mustang GT. 6MT with the performance pack!
the Camaro SS 1LE would be my second pick...
and I would settle for the Dodge, if I couldnt get the Mustang or Camaro
Have you thought about the Malibu, I mean the Chevy SS? Comes in 6MT and has 4 doors.

Can you squeeze a GT350 into your budget, before the production-end drives values upward?

Neighbor has a mid-to-higher trim 300 in their driveway (dealer demo) in a dark-ish orange. Not a bad looking car, though I'd opt for the Charger over the 300.
Maybe wider than the Stinger, but possibly shorter in overall length.
Edit: Stinger is ~10" shorter in length.

I have already test driven the 5.0 mustang and even test drove the 5.0 bullit (which I love!) but it is expensive. I also test drove the Charger 5.7 hemi, and the Scat Pack too! The Scat Pack is very fun to drive and sounds great. I still need to test drive the Camaro SS. I have it down to these 3, but always split. One thing I can say I would really enjoy staying with a manual transmission, so that would rule out the Charger.....

The Challenger is big but that's what makes the ride quality so much better than the Mustang or Camaro. It's a muscle car while the other two are sports cars, or pony cars if you want to go old school.

The reviews so far of the 4 banger are pretty meh. The Type S doesn't seem to be as exciting as we were expecting it to be either. Honestly the new Stinger will make more sense than this in almost every aspect. The 2021 G70 will be both more powerful and more luxurious than the TLX.
Off late the disconnect between Honda & Acura is amusing, The Accord has a better head unit and it the engine could be tuned to get same output as FWD TLX, makes no sense to pay extra except just for the Badge the worth of which also is debatable.

So, I agree now, the new TLX is beautiful, but the engine is not quite what I want, after reading the reviews and test drives. I would wait for the Type S, but will not be able to afford anything brand new, so I can forget about that TLX, unfortunately. I have now decided the camaro is a fantastic engine and car, but the seat is too low for me, and the visibility is horrible, and there is no back seat at all. So, I'm down to the Mustang GT premium and the Charger R/T Hemi. Consumer Reports rates them about even - both very good ratings and test drives. I am very split with the two. I like leather seats (mustang), and I like manual trans (mustang). But, I like the comfortable ride of the Charger. I really want the car to be a daily driver, and they both seem good and practical for that. Both have very nice engines, that are powerful and fast. The mustang may be more nimble and is a bit lighter than the Charger. I don't like to be like everybody else, and I see plenty of mustang 5.0's and Charger on the road. I will look for a 2018-2019 Charger or Mustang soon, my 08 TL-S is with 200,000 miles, and is costing me too much money monthly for repairs.
Gas mileage is nearly identical in the charger 5.7 and mustang GT. There is more interior room in the Charger, but both seem to just have mediocre interiors, nothing like the TL or TLX. I have test drove both, and liked both.....

LOL, yeah, definitely a cop-out. I'm three and a half years into ownership of my 2006 TL and have spent roughly $8,000 on all types of maintenance (i.e. normal maintenance like oil changes, tires, and brakes, unscheduled maintenance like motor mounts and rear main oil seal, and "when" not "if" maintenance like the clutch). Over that same period of time my wife has spent roughly $15,000 in payments plus another $2,000 in maintenance on her Mazda3 (which was paid off last month). Long story short, if a car is still in good condition from a body and interior perspective, and you still enjoy driving it, then maintaining it is by far the better financial decision versus buying a new car. Said another way, if you really want a new car, then get a new car, but saying an old car costs too much to maintain is a straw-man argument.
