Camaro’s air bags spontaneously deploy doing donuts
This Chevy Camaro put on quite a drifting demonstration at a Michigan dragstrip last weekend. Right up until its side air bags decided they'd had one too many donuts and spontaneously deployed, slightly burning a passenger.
UPDATE
Caught by a spectator at the Milan Dragway in Milan, Mich., the Camaro driven by Paul Beiswenger showed no signs of injury before the side-curtain bags randomly appear to have deployed. The videographer says a woman riding in the passenger seat suffered a minor burn on her arm from the accelerant used to inflate the bag.
Our guess is the accelerometers used by the air bag system to sense when a crash happens got just enough g-force to assume the Camaro was about to smack something hard or roll over — but it's an unusual way to spoil not just a track day but the view on the ride home.
UPDATED: GM spokesman Alan Adler sends this explanation:
It is unusual to have this occur. However, it is possible for a driver to create conditions where the air bag sensors believe a rollover is imminent. This can lead to an unwanted air bag deployment. On rollover side curtain bags, the vehicle's rollover sensing system is looking for a certain set of factors that "predict" a vehicle is going to roll over. The airbag system cannot wait until it is too late to deploy the airbags. Drifting or creating a situation that has a certain combination of speed and vehicle angle can lead to an unwanted air bag deployment.
Take heart, Camaro fans — you always have straight lines.

The sizzle in the Steak
Side curtain airbag deployment, and not side-impact bags.
Interesting.....car looked nowhere like it was going to roll-over.

First, he wasn't even doing a very good job of doing donuts.
Second, that car was nowhere NEAR tilting to the level of those curtains needing to go off to protect the occupants. That's just embarrassing for GM...but funny for us to watch.

well that sucks...
so if the airbags go off before the car actually flips.. by the time it flips end over end the damn things will be deflated and you'll smash your face on the glass anyways... great

Bingo! Seriously, those things had to have experienced a "premature [inflation]"...ahem.

Camaros never could go around corners.

Defective sensor. Met a guy with broken arm who had driver air bag deploy as he was entering the vehicle/Ford.

look how the turned the car so quickly while going sideways to stop, if the yaw sensors and steering angle sensors an such determine he is sliding they will put the airbag system on ready. Then when you snap the wheel so far over to the side like he did, it probably got the threshold of the sensors to trip them and activate the side curtain airbags. The goal is to activate them BEFORE the car starts to roll over so your head has some cushion vs. in the middle of the roll so you head doesn't hit the metal and suddenly get snapped to the side with the inflation of the bag.

You guys have never tried drifting?
Maybe it's because I'm young and stupid but it's ridiculously fun

That what happen when you use American muscle car for drifting. Leave it to the Japanese cars do better an look more sexy!!! Lmao!!! On top of that the Emb take forever to cut out the side airbag, What happen if the car is flip up side down, And leaking fuels.

Chevy Camaro and Premature Ejection. Why am I not surprised?
BTW - I bet he doesn't laugh when he gets the bill for replacement.

airbags usually don't retain air so it's crucial that they inflate literally as your moving towards them.
I don't know if these do, but the video shows before he cuts it that it's already deflated implying they work like front airbags.
again, I'm not familiar with "curtains" so they may stay inflated for all I know.
what Im describing..
