Deciding between the two: Honda CR-V & Mazda CX-7
Okay, my wife has narrowed it down to buying a Mazda CX-7 or a Honda CR-V.
Here's some facts:
Both are 2008s, as we want the APR incentives.
Honda CRV EX-L w/ Navi - Black on Black
Mazda CX-7 w/ Tech package - Black on Black
She drove both, likes both, doesn't care as much as I do. She is trading in a 2001 Accord LX coupe w/ 46k miles. Carmax offered $5,500 for this so that's not so much an issue.
Honda has 1.9% financing for 36 months.
Mazda has 0% financing for 60 months.
Most dealers won't budge away from $26,750 + TTL for the CRV. Edmunds says invoice is $27,050.
We were in the Mazda dealer and the MSRP was $33,400 and the dealer was going to take $6,000 off before we even sat down to negociate. Edmunds says invoice is $30,300 and I have read/seen other's get theirs for $25,500 + TTL or so.
Mazda has xenons, Honda does not.
Honda has more room, Mazda has less.
Both have 2WD and AWD, but the 2WD are hard to come by around Chicago...
I'm concerned about resale, probably the most.
Also, we are going to keep this car for a while and since it's for my wife and we want to start having kids, I want a safe, safe car, which I know they both are.
Thoughts?

I feel the need...
If resale and safety are your two priorities, CRV hands down.

The Honda is going to have a better resale (especially this generation due to its popularity).
But if you can get the Mazda for the same price as the CR-V, I'd go with the Mazda.
I have one and love it, but I would go with the Mazda for all intents and purposes. The CR-V is slow, the xenons in the Mazda are better at night (half of the time I find myself turning the stalk thinking I forgot to turn on the lights because the CR-V's lights are so weak).

You should just jump up to the Cx-9. They're practically givin them away! I personally like the look of the Cx-7 better even though it looks like the Murano and Rx. I've just never liked Crv's, they've always looked cheap to me. Having the turbo in the Cx-7 also makes it a blast to drive. I work at a Mazda dealer so I'm biased but just a lil.

Honda has better reliabilty, gas mileage, and holds its value better.
Mazda has turbo, not so great gas mileage, and looses its value faster.
If it was me I'd go for the CR-V.

Take this for what it's worth regarding safety ... And it could be that any car would do this, I really don't know. Anyway:
Friend gets a flat and guy offers to help her change the tire on her current-gen CR-V. So he jacks the car up and doesn't know what he's doing ... The jack was put under the floorpan and not the jack point along the unibody and it not only deforms the floor pan but breaks welds that hold it to the unibody.
You could see the road from the four or five inch high gap that was a result.
Perhaps any car would do that. I don't know. But it didn't inspire much confidence in me when I saw it.

Here's what you do.
Sit down and write down all the attributes that you and your wife personally want in each car. Things like:
1.) Color
2.) Interior rear leg room
3.) Navigation
4.) Back up camera
5.) Leather
6.) AWD
7.) Fold-down rear seats
8.) Heated seats
9.) Resale value
10.) Price
11.) Gas mileage
...and so on. List every aspect that is important to you. If it comes down to a feature that is basically "yes" or "no", assign a '1' to the "yes" and a '0' for the "no." If it is a number (i.e. rear seat leg room), then multiply that number (if higher is better) by a weight between 0 and 1 that you determine. The weights all have to sum to 1.
For example: for the first three factors above, I assigned weights (weights are based on importance and should ALL sum to 1, just like below for these three):
1.) Color (black = 1, white = 0.3, red = 0.5, blue = 0) X 0.3
2.) Interior rear leg room (14 inches) X 0.3
3.) Navigation (Yes = 1, no = 0) X 0.4
Do this for each aspect for each car. The highest score wins, and then go shopping!

The '07 Mazda had really poor reliability, If they have gotten better, that would be my choice, otherwise, I don't need a car thats going to break down.

looked at the CX7 when it first came out. great unique car.
personally, i think the fascia of the CR-V is one of the worst creations on a SUV. I dont understand the reasoning behind the oddly shaped grille. although, CR-Vs are everywhere, so im assuming others dont really mind.

Interesting, thanks for the responses guys...
Where have you seen reliability stats for the CX-7? I can't find anything and that's what I have been looking for...

What Would Don Draper Do?
i've test driven both when the gf was looking for a new car.
i'd take the CX-7 without a doubt.
i think it looks better inside/out, and i thought it was more fun to drive.
the pricing was an issue, but it looks like you're getting a good deal plus 0% financing.

How about a 1 year old RDX with about 10k miles? I found some listing for 28k, which I am sure can get down to 25-26
