In-dash CD Players like 8-Track players of the 70's?
I've had my car since April 2011... I don't know if the CD player works, because I never tried it. If I'm not listening to XM then I'm on the iPod which sounds great through the system.
With iPods and all the other players, should CD players be installed in cars anymore?

The CD player will eventually go away like the cassette deck.
5 years from now there will be very few cars with CD players.

I use the 'CD slot' for DTS and DVD-A
I prefer quality surround sound over 128 kbps MP3's.

I'd like a car stereo with a removable SSD. Connect it to your PC to transfer songs to it, plug it back into stereo like with Sony iPod stereo above to play songs.

The 8-track was always a ill-conceived format, it was doomed on arrival since the cassette was so much more popular.
Consider this, the CD came out in 1982 and cassette players were in some cars as factory radios as late as 2010 (IIRC the Lexus SC was the last OEM cassette player as OEM sold in the US).
Alot of folks have CD collections and many don't have time to fuss with putting all their music on their iPod's or ripping them to MP3's.
I totally agree their popularity is fading fast(hence very few if any CD changers in factory stereos) but I guess CD's will be around for another ~10 years. There's a huge collection of CD media already out there.
Just my

They'll have CD players in cars as long as they keep making DVD Audio discs!

Indash CD players had some good staying power and held strong popularity (still do to some degree). However, times and media have changed dramatically over the years.
That said, NOTHING is like an 8-track. N O T H I N G!!! ...and I don't mean that in a good way.

You can tell manufacturers are taking notice. Dad's RL is an '07 and a 6-disc changer but only a basic AUX plug while mom's MDX has a single CD player and full USB connectivity. My Elantra can do iPod, USB, AUX, MP3 and WMA discs as well as CDs.

With all of the "cloud" storage, I can foresee a device to access your personal cloud from music to email to the net to controlling gadgets at home via the car.
Maybe then car makers will have room to add a large ashtray and cigarette lighter back.

Thats a bold statement - Youre basically saying that artists will no longer be putting out albums in hard copy CD format in the near future. I am sure the entertainment industry will beg to differ.
I think CD players will be around for quite a bit longer. If not CDs, then some type enhanced CD or DVD audio that is physically the same type of disc as before. Sure, the demographics on this forum are probably more in tune with ipods and portable memory, but that does not mean that the CD/DVD world is nonexistant.
