The Dangers of a Coil Spring

This is from a while ago, but I thought you guys might be interested in seeing it. I never knew that coil springs were this powerful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYFOI_UsVxI

Fast forward to 1:10.

"The strut was bent so we couldn't use the spring compressor in the shop and had to do it by hand and so i was ready with my cell to capture whatever would happen.

Holy stupid!

I've never actually seen one fly out like that, but considering that they are designed to hold upwards of 1000 lbs individually, I'm not really surprised. When me and my friends did spring/shock swaps in the garage, ghetto or not we would always use spring compressors and have a mounted tire/wheel on each end of the assembly when we undid the strut. If the strut was bent, F that....

My teacher calls those spring compressors widowmakers we have mounted-on-the-wall spring compressors at school, which are much safer...

You should see an airbag go off..... very impressive and LOUD

WTF is wrong with those guys!! There are way safer ways to do that if you can't use a wall mounted spring compressor. They are lucky no one got hurt, that is REALLY dangerous.

Don't do what they did when you do yours!

I used an old leather belt to hold the spring in the compressed position when i did my own install. It was no big deal, maybe less tension on the CL springs than most other vehicles.

The guy across the street from me got hit with a spring that was just holding a tarp down (not even super compressed like this) and it shattered both bones in his arm with a compound fracture and the doctor said if it hit him in the head it would have taken his head off.
