Curious, anyone know what HP a 90s thunderbird is packing?

i was racing one on the freeway the other night for like 20 minutes straight, just flooring, swerving lanes, staying in front, swerving lanes. i was surprised at how it kept up with me. of course i burned it in the end but he was staying up with me for a little bit. it was a 91-94 thunderbird, probably a v8 or something. i have a 2000 TLP with headers. whats the hp of a thunderbird are they pretty fast cars?

235 with 330 lb. ft of torque for one of the supercharged models, around 200hp for a V-8, and the sixes were very slow.

Was the supercharged model a 4 or 6?

I always liked the Super Coupes...

The supercharged model was the SC, and it was a V6. One of my friends converted an automatic SC to a 5-speed manual and added a bunch of performance parts. Pretty fast and loud car.

Another one of my friend's actually in the process of creating one serious sleeper. He has a stock '92 Thunderbird LX and he's going to rebuild the entire engine from someone very reputable in Long Island and bump the horsepower up to around 265 with a whole bunch of performance mods. Don't ask me why he's spending thousands of dollars on a stock V6 Thunderbird, but he loves his car so all the power to him.

And for the record, A LOT of those old Thunderbirds from the early '90's belong to enthusiasts that add a lot of go-fast mods to keep up with the times. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy you raced had some interesting stuff under the hood.

I had 2 of those SCs

The 89-93 tbird SCs made 210hp and 315tq i believe. it was a 3.8 v6 sc and intercooled. They ran stock 6.9s (0-60) with the 5speed.

The regular 3.8 V6s were crap - 140hp. The v8s were detuned mustang motors making 200hp and were pretty slow also.

That's about right, but the Supercoupes were a little lower in hp...

My last car was a 94 V8 tbird... 205 HP or so... The V8 Model has a badge behind the front tire... Electronically limited to 105-109 mph... I used to hit the limiter every so often

My brother is storing his modded (300hp??) SuperCoupe in my garage... He needs to put it up forsale, but hasn't gotten around to putting together the list of mods for a forsale ad. It looks stock, but it's fast...

IIRC, the V8 model (93 m/y) topped out at 145mph or about the same as the SC...although it wasnt quite as quick. Although most were 3.8L V6 models, we had a couple of V8s at Hertz back when I worked there as a vehicle transporter.

Transporting cars like that have me convinced that Hertz transporters back in the 90s pioneered the sport of drifting.

Yeah, the 5.0L 90's Tbirds weren't limited IIRC like my 94 4.6L... and with the 5.0L there are alot more hipo parts out there (there are more for the 4.6L now).

93 was the last year of the 5.0L, 95 was the last year of the SC (I think), and 97 was the last year of the Tbird 2+2 coupe...

The Tbird was discontinued 2 years after I bought one, the CL was discontiued 8 months after I bought mine :shakehead

Yeah, I recall that powertrain shared between the TC, SVO Stang and XR4Ti (which I almost bought). Unsurprisingly, diehard Stang guys back then wanted no part of that powertrain.

I loved all those turbo cars that were back in the '80's such as, the Cougar XR7, Turbo T-bird Coupe, Mustang SVO, Buick GN, Turbo Trans AM etc...

The tbirds are pretty heavy tho'... the hot swap is to throw a modded 2.3L turbo motor (XR4Ti electronics are modular, Turbocoupe electrics are tougher to swap) into a 2000lb RWD Pinto body... That's at least what Joe Morgan did to get his Pinto to do 10 seconds in the quarter mile (for around $7000 total).
