I actually never minded how slow my BRZ was, in spite of coming from a big pushrod V8. E85 tune helped. What I'm missing is something more comfortable and practical. Really like the CTR - dynamically it's everything I want but there's too many interior and exterior quirks that aren't easy to change.
The shifter and clutch look like a lot of work, kinda spoiled by the cheap and easy clutch spring delete and great stock shifter on the twins (I put in a TRD quick shifter anyway). It's concerning that people say the stock clutch on the Mk7 R can slip even stock and not abused. Would hate to change the clutch on an AWD. I drive in traffic way too much, don't like the DSG for that.
Regardless, this looks like the complete package for me as a daily. I just need to hold off on a test drive lest I do something I regret.
You can always go the GTI route to save money on the initial purchase price (brand new are typically marked down, and used even more so). The clutch is still crappy, but you get a bit more headroom since it's the same clutch in the R IIRC. The clutch isn't too terrible to replace. The GTI is certainly much easier (unless you have the performance pack, then it's very similar to the R). But with the R, you can unbolt the bevel box from the trans housing and drop the trans without removing the subframe. It's a tight fit though. Most DIYers do it in about 12-14hrs over the course of a weekend. The shop I brought it to did it in less than 6hrs, but he typically does 2-3 clutch jobs a week.
Speaking of transmissions - I swapped the factory trans fluid out for Motul Gear 300 last night. In the process, I found out that VW has two different transmission housings - one with a fill plug and one without. Guess which one I have
Thankfully, there is a bolt that can be removed at the top of the transmission to add fluid, but you have to pay attention to how much you are adding so you don't overfill. VW is really pushing this lifetime fluid BS... The new fluid definitely smoothed out shifting once it's up to temp. I think gear lash at low speeds (which was amplified by the single mass flywheel) is lessened as well.
Nope! The fill hole would typically be located between the black cap and the brass/brown sensor on the front of the housing, like this:

Filling through the shifter detent spring bolt hole actually seemed a bit easier, since you have more space to maneuver a flexible funnel. But, as I said, you just have to be mindful of how much fluid you are adding. These take 2.3l, and I drove the car pretty spiritedly before, so the old fluid was warm and thin and came out relatively easily. I wouldn't do this procedure with cold fluid.
I guess you could probably tap and bung it with low-risk to it cracking
But probably want the housing off to make sure no metal bits get pushed in.

Wut? Modern DSG isn't at all like SMG transmissions of old. The DSG in traffic is excellent and not at all jerky or lurchy like the old SMGs. If anything, the manual is more harsh than the DSG is. You just set the ACC to 60mph and let the car creep along by itself while you tool around on your phone and listen to music.
Also, you don't need to replace the clutch(es) to handle a lot more power.

Maybe the 7DSG is much better at low speeds compared to the 6DSG, but my GTI was jerky as hell in traffic when I had it in auto mode - which is why it spent most of the time in manual mode. Even then, when the clutches would reengage (regardless of manual or auto mode), it would clunk into gear.
With the R, I can let out the clutch without touching the gas pedal and the car will creep along at 5-6mph without issue. The throttle can be touchy in race mode, so I usually drop it into eco mode to dull throttle on-off a bit when in bumper to bumper traffic - but it's still way smoother than my DSG ever was

Hmm, I may need to check out the new one. I rode in a Mk6 GTI and didn't like the DSG in traffic. It was awesome doing a hard pull though!

I'd much rather be doing something else other than working the clutch for an hour, been there done that, letting the ACC deal with it is far better.
Driving the DSG on a great road with minimal traffic is still enjoyable and it's great to hear it do the DSG fart when changing gears. It's a blast.

Come on up to MN and I'll give you a ride. I certainly have no qualms with the way it engages, it's very smooth and basically feels like a competent manual transmission driver is in control. Maybe I should go test drive a GTI and find out... Did you have a mk7 GTI or a mk6?

Yeah, the mk6 is ancient compared to the mk7 and even more so, the mk7.5. Night and day difference on a number of levels. Go test drive one. The GTI still has the 6DSG and the R (2018+) has the 7DSG, you can easily find out the differences. If you want an even better comparison, the 2015-2017 mk7 R has the 6DSG as well.
