curious to know, how did you come up with that??
And I know most break in procedures from the manufacturers is to keep the rpm low for the first 1000 miles and not stay the same speed right?

GET IT! Toyota/Subaru gave us a really capable car from the factory, but the engineers were smart and gave us ways to make it even better.

I love taking turns in the FR-S 10-15mph faster then I can in the CL. I can only imagine what a bit more camber and stickier tires will do

I kind of paying attention to baseball now, but only around mid-June do I start to really take notice.

Most manufacturers say not to rev past a certain RPM, use cruise, keep it at one speed for an extended amount of time, the list goes on. Its mostly lawyer talk IMO.

There seem to be two schools of thought on breaking in an engine. One is rip it from day one. That group says the engine has been broken in at the factory, which could be true, but you have to remember youre not just breaking in the engine. You breaking in a clutch, the diff, the rest of the suspension......

I personally dont understand keeping it below a set rpm for 1k miles. Lets say you dont rev past 4k rpm for the first 1k miles, you drive like a grandma, but magically at 1,001 miles you can roast the tires, take it up to redline, WOT shift........it just doesnt make sense to me.

When I had the CL engine built, I wouldnt rev past 4k rpms for the first 500 miles (then oil change), then 5k til 1k miles, so on and so forth until redline, slowly adding more throttle as the miles added up. That was on an engine that was handbuilt. Production engines have such close tolerances, that I followed that procedure, just accelerated.

Honestly though, most of the car buying public keep a car until 100k miles then trade it in. If you were to take two engines with identical mileage, one that was broken in according to the book and one that was beat on from day 1, I highly doubt youll see a difference at 100k miles.

prius tires

James May's theory: these tires will bringing you closer to driving at the limit on everyday streets, while fatter tires won't and well its still fun driving near the limit

I like how the TE37SL's look on these new cars. Any thought to what you might put meatier tires on?

I autocrossed in one of these yesterday, amazing car. The stock tires really do suck though, it was a bit more slidey than I expected. It handles very similar to my Miata though, which is awesome. Congrats on getting one!!

They look good on some cars, but Im not really a fan of TE37s nor do I have the money for the SLs. They also dont look that great in less aggressive fitments, and I can only really put an 8 or 8.5" wide wheel up front in the 36-44mm range. Anything more aggressive and it'll poke. I can go real aggressive out back, but Id like to keep a square setup on the car until Im making north of 300whp.

I will be running wider tires. Stock is 215/45-17. Im looking at either 235 or 245/40-17s or 235 or 245/35-18s. The speedo difference between them and stock are negligible.

Im probably going to go with Continental DWs (not the all seasons) since they are light, decently priced, and have good reviews. Im just hesitant about the rather soft side wall.

Thanks! I've driven an S2k in the past, but never a Miata/MX-5. I really need to get some seat time in one.

yea but the soft side walls... part of the reason its still good for most is because its a dd for most people and you wont notice it during rush hour.

You still have a while ahah so keep looking, dont set your mind on the DW's

I am very happy with my Bridgestone RE760s. They have good wear and are pretty sporty. 275 35 18s were slightly north of 500 mounted (2) with the warranty and replacement cert. I still have RE050s in front.

If you're worried about sidewall softness, maybe try a bigger wheel and thinner tire? I don't know how heavy the wheels you're looking at are, but it might be worth the trade-off.

I had DWSs for a while on the Accord and I noticed the softness a bit. Great grip, though.

I had the DWS on my TL. I liked them a lot. Didn't feel soft on the side walls to me. Then again, I didn't track the TL.

I definitely havent made my mind up, and IIRC Conti is reworking the DW formula and a new, stiffer tire should be out this summer - so Ive heard.

The reviews on them are pretty good, and for the sizes Im looking at, the prices arent bad. But they are heavy (25lbs/ea).

I ran them on the CL and loved them, and theyre only a pound heavier then the Contis in 245/35-18s.

Im most likely going with a 18" wheel. My brother has 245/40-18 DWSs on his Accord 6-6 and while they do grip well, I feel them "drop off" when cornering hard. But thats with a 3500lb car, so its hard to guess how the summer version will feel on a 2800lb car.

Heres why I keep bringing weight into the equation:

Stock 17x7 wheels - 20.1lbs
Stock 215/45-17s - 20lbs

The wheels Im looking at are ~15lbs. That leaves me 25lbs to play with, but I want to reduce rotating mass, so ideally I want to be closer to 20lbs.

Conti DWs - 21lbs
Hankook V12s - 22lbs

The one good thing is the Hankooks are slightly cheaper at the moment. It just sucks that I had to buy tires for the CL about a month ago, so I havent pulled the trigger just yet.

Yea, it would be awesome. Im leaning towards the Hankooks again since Ive run them in the past and loved them.

Ravspec (vendor on here and FT86Club) is claiming a 17x9 +38 will fit, which means I can run a more aggressive 18x8 then I originally thought (low 30s offset). I really wish I had some 5x100 wheels here that I could test fit.

Anyway, finally got around to ripping the FR-S badge off the trunk:

Ive also got over 900 miles on her already

Im still thinking about getting a personalized plate. I just have no idea what to put on it.

Just left Scion in Florence, SC. They have a silver 6AT. Salesman said the first thing he did in it when they received it was did 125 down I-20.

Not sure if I want that exact car. He was pushing me to "get into it", so I did. Got it up to 95mph on I-95.

I must say though, I do believe I just found my next car. The only option I think I want is the tint and 3M clear bra. I plan on doing everything else myself. He also said they are currently able to order the TRD 5AD body kit. It comes pre-painted and ready to install.

I just want the blizzard white and I'll be ready to go. Anyone know the wait time if I order one from Toyota/Scion online?

Yea Id be hesitant to buy from that dealer.

BTW, if the dealer is selling the Scion clear bra, DONT get it. Find a local 3M installer to do it. The Scion clear bra is $400 for the hood and fenders and $600 for the bumper, and the film doesnt even cover the entire bumper. An independent installer can do the entire front end for ~$650. And no offense to the port mechanics, but the 3M installers are much better.

License plate frames!

Why not wait for the license plate frame to come in so you know what number it is, then make the vanity plate Xof86, and burn the frame? Or hang it up in your garage or something.

I forget, did you say you'd be rebadging it as a Toyota? Or keeping the Scion badges?

And those exhaust openings are begging for bigger tips, small engine be damned.

Have you considered rustproofing?

I forget, did you say you'd be rebadging it as a Toyota? Or keeping the Scion badges?

And those exhaust openings are begging for bigger tips, small engine be damned.

Have you considered rustproofing?
The plate frame WILL NOT be going on the car. But its something all the First 86ers get, ands hand laid CF and numbers x of 86. Ill probably turn it into a picture frame

I may rebadge it as a Toyota, but Im waiting for the JDM/EDM airbag to drop in price. Im not spending $900 on an airbag to get rid of the Scion badges.

No need to rust proof as the car wont be driven in winter. It'll get prepped for storage, put in the garage, and covered - assuming Im still living in a climate that sees snow of course. My plans to eventually move west have not changed.

And yes, those stock tips are minuscule. The JDM 86 got decent tips, and once again, the USDM market gets shafted I should have an exhaust on the car by mid summer. Im waiting for a properly designed intake to hit the market as well.

Thats PekingDucks (on FT86Club) car. He was the first to take delivery in the country, and Im supremely jealous that hes getting the 5AD lip kit and spoiler for free.

And those XXRs look decent from the side, but the front pokes and the rear is slightly tucked Even he hates them, but he got them for free.

Agreed. Not sure what it is with all of the Greddy exhausts on this car, but at high RPMs it just sounds tinny.
