Congratsssssss! Car looks lovely in white!!!!
How did you like your MK7 GTi? I'm thinking of getting one for our second car next to Sienna. I don't really like GTi but there's not many automatic car that's decently practical and fun. I want wifey to drive around too sometimes. Looking to get a 17 Sport trim used for like $20K. If not, I can buy my friends CTR for $33k but his is red. Not in a hurry so trying to see what's really good.

Pretty good! I know I haven't been on here in a loooong time, so I have 'splainin' to do:
- Ditched the Lexus
- Got a GTI
- Got a new girlfriend
- Got a new job
- Ditched the old new girlfriend
- Built a house
- Got a dog
- Got a new new girlfriend
- Ditched the GTI
- Got a Golf R
There have been ups and downs, which is to be expected, but I'm happy - which is the most important thing.
How's everything with you?

TBH though, if you wait it out a few more months til Dec/Jan/Feb, you can grab a leftover 2018 model, that way, you get the 7yr warranty. Dealers near me regularly take $3-7k off previous model year GTIs when the new ones are getting ready to hit the lots.
Thanks man! And yes, I definitely need to travel down that way again sometime soon.

This is true. I've upgraded the engine in every car I've owned in some way (with the exception of the FR-S, nothing was helping that piece of shit) and there is never enough power. I'm already eyeing stage 3 upgrades after I replace the clutch since I'm getting used to what I have now

It was an Engineering Explained video!
Okay, fun fact...after the grueling 2 year degree in business I tried to jump over to Mech Eng degree at FIU but the counselor said I'd basically have to start college over.
I was like, ok sounds like I'm getting a Business Degree then.

I actually test drove a C6 Grand Sport two years ago. I loved the color combo, and it had the sports seats. I love the way they look, but...I wasn't a fan of the way they drove. I felt like I was sitting on the car, not in it, if that makes sense. The Cayman S felt soooo much better and much more accessible.
Love you too bud!
If your friends Type R is relatively low mileage and in good shape, I'd snatch that up at $33k. If red isn't your cup of tea though, I'd seriously look at the GTI. I highly suggest the Sport trim (or an older Performance Pack car, so you have the limited slip). They're torquey little cars, and get great mileage on the highway. I was averaging around 34mpg on roadtrips with mine, and around 27ish in town. The R is averaging around 24 in town and just about 31 on the highway.

Yeah I know GTi isn't really a track car or anything but I definitely want the trim with the LSD. All I want from GTi is the LSD, DSG and LED Headlights. hahaha
The new VW cars come with 7 year warranty??

Yeah! He got his with 600 miles and CPO from a Honda dealership. He put less than 6k miles on it and has that crazy $3000 ceramic coat and clear bra package on it too. I did his interior so it is in a good shape. He has a Cayman GTS and R32 GTR too. He just gets bored of cars very fast. I seriously wish it wasn't red. I'm okay with Blue or Grey and first choice is Championship White. Will think about this!

Would any of you actually pony up for a custom color through VW? They seem rare AF. I’m guessing there is likely zero haggling on price with the dealer, if going that route. The car would likely cost several K more, I’d imagine. Worth it?

The custom color is a $2500 option to begin with so you're already looking at more money before even negotiating off MSRP. I'd probably pay MSRP for a green one but that's just me.

Had I known they were bringing the custom color option to the US for the 2019s, I would've held on to my lease until it expired (which was Dec 11 2018, then either drive the FRS for a few months or extend the lease on the GTI three months). But hindsight is 20-20. I'm still considering the trade, but it would have to be a favorable deal in order for me to pull the trigger. You're looking at about $44k for a DSG car with a Spektrum color, before taxes. Trade in on my car is around $34k right now. Private party is around $36-37k.. That's a pretty big hit for me to absorb when I have a bunch of house projects I want to tackle.

Good catch, that is correct. Only the 2018 SE and Autobahn GTI has LED headlights. The HIDs in the 2017s were not bad at all though - I had them on mine.
It is. Which is another reason I haven't done it yet Luckily mine 6MT was still in the 30s, but it was still the most I've ever spent on a car, and I was sweating bullets going into it.

I don't think 7 years warranty is worth it for me. I will likely tune it as soon as I get it. bahahaha 17 Sport trim gets me all I want.

Now there's a name I haven't seen in a while... . By the looks of ig you seem to be doing well! Glad to see you over here.
What are you doing with the FR-S these days? I thought you were talking about selling it a while back.

You and SWEIDIT-hyung were a big part in getting me to get my BRZ.
I always knew I liked the 86 when I saw it in concept photos. But following your threads pushed me to go and test drive one.
I haven't pulled the bumper off for anything, afraid of the tabs getting deformed and having the dreaded bumper gap.
Congrats on the new car! Good to hear about the shifter post-mods.
R-zine thoon. Who's next to get one?

@Aman The FR-S is currently sitting on jackstands in the garage. I've got the stock suspension back in - the coilovers, sway bars, LCAs, and StopTech BBK was sold to @MEKO this past summer. I still need to swap the header, over pipe and mid pipe back to stock, then pull the short shifter, then the car can go back on the ground and I can pull the interior trim, radio, seats, headlights and taillights. I had sold the driveshaft and diff (with 4.56 gears) to a buddy a while ago. I'll be taking some time off later this month to focus on that, so I can sell the car before the end of the year. I'd love to get the CRV and the R in the garage before the first snow storm.
And I love the chassis of the 86 - but the engine is, for lack of a better word, trash. And with all of the issues I had with it, it was really the low point of my obsession with cars, and it took a while to get back into them (which is also why I stayed away from forums for so long). The GTI started to pull me back in a bit, and the R made me realize how much I missed actually being passionate about cars. I haven't gotten that feeling from the FR-S since I first bought it. Anytime I do drive it, I just get more and more annoyed with it.

I've never been impressed with any Subaru Boxer engine in regards to reliability or durability especially when you throw forced induction at it. Tuned or not.

Did you have the early build first model year one? The first 13 MY FRSs were literally trash with issues after issues. My BRZ was late build 13 and didn't have a single issue after 14 track days and hundreds of canyon drives. I miss it so much. Gonna get a used one when we upgrade to a house with garage and make it a track duty car.

I love the way the car looks and the handling characteristics. It's the lackluster engine that kills it for me. There are serious flaws with it's design, one of which Subaru has finally began recalling:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/jensen/.../#44fbd3153d58
And then there are the oiling issues that these engines face...I thought about an engine swap, but it's just not worth it. I would rather spend the cash on an already well sorted from the factory Cayman or 911.

Wow you really had like one of the first ones hahahaha Yeah it's unfortunate that they took 5 years to start recalling those POS engine issues the early build ones had. Sorry to hear man. I had a fantastic memory and taught me so much in terms of high performance track driving. I want to have another with flex fuel kit and upgrade to Greddy turbo later down the road. These cars are so cheap used.

Yeah, I'm always skeptical of the first model year of a new car. Especially with a completely new engine and everything. Mine is a 2014.
Even something like the J-series, which has been around forever has issues in 3.7L configuration (4G 6MT)
I love the chassis too, yes the engine is lacking. Met a guy who swapped in a 3.0L Synergy V8 in his BRZ. Rated at 500 hp(?), can keep up with a 997 Turbo on the track.
