Is air suspension generally more expensive than coilovers?

OMG yes...
don't quote me precisely but $1500 or less for coilovers, $3-5k for air when it's all said and done depending on what air management system etc. I'm no expert, but I know some.

If all you're after is "dat mad stance yo", then coils would be the cheapest as pos coils can be had for under a grand. POS air systems can be had for ~$2k as well, but....they're pos (EDIT - not saying all air systems are, just the cheap ones).

FWIW, ultra-top-shelf-track-oriented coilovers can cost upwards of $7k. Some of the serious builds I've seen have been in the $3-4k range for coilovers alone.

M, what makes the air systems pieces of poop...? Sorry, I've never installed any in any of my cars so, limited experience.

USUALLY, though...from my limited modding experience, the more you pay, the better you play in the car world. So, just wondering why you'd think they are crap.

Just to be clear - I'm not saying all of them are a POS; just the cheap ones. Rereading what I wrote, I can see how can it can easily be misconstrued.

Anyway, from crappy controllers, to weak compressors that are improperly sized, to shit-quality bags; the cheap kits are not worth it. You are right though, you get what you pay for.

Always thinking/dreaming of it, Herr T...the "sea cucumber" was paid off last month. So, naturally, the itch for something else is pretty bad...especially whenever I drop off the MINI (shares the floor with the BMW dealership).

I want a 5-series more badly than I want you to step on a LEGO brick.

But, realistically, it looks to be another 4-5 years before I even realistically can be in a new car.

Rest assured, there are plenty of LEGOs for me to step on in my household. One of these days, when things slow down a bit, I'll need to post pictures of the LEGO city project my oldest son is building in our upstairs bonus room. Preview - it involves a train, an airplane, several "city" sets, and an old ping-pong table. In short, it ain't small.

I can't wait for my son to be old enough to do those things with him.

Update on the seat bolts. I'm stupid and can't read - though, in my defense I was looking at McMaster on my phone.

They actually do have bolts I can use, and they're stronger then factory - grade 12.9

Just ordered, so I won't be able to replace the passenger seat this weekend The dealer wanted $2 per bolt (which is less than list) but I don't like the heads on them and they'd need to be special ordered. The McMaster stuff should be here Tuesday at the latest. I picked up 25x 30mm bolts (same as stock), 10x 40mm bolts (if I decide to angle the seat more), and pack of 10x thick washers; all for $20.

These are the screws:

That head should afford me more clearance to tighten them down. In the current configuration, the front bolts are a pain in the ass to tighten.

Quality parts really shouldn't. If you're talking about the air suspension specifically, as long as everything is in good nick you should get a good portion back, but the install/removal would probably cost you.

Nice seats civic. My friend has the same ones. They are comfy but I prefer my bucket still. It is rather funny when I need to adjust rear shocks at events and people see me climb through the trunk to do it. There is always someone laughing at me :/.

Anyone who puts air suspension in a frs should be shot.

Ordering bolts brings back memories. Driving to all the local hardware stores multiple times and ordering from a half dozen online sites.

People think coilovers are cheap because everyone buys cheap knock offs. They'd rather spend money on wheels than a nice suspension.

Thanks Brian. Buckets are definitely nice, but not what I was after.

If I were building a diesel dually - hell yea I'd toss air on it. But I'm not putting air on anything I drive spiritedly.

No doubt...
did the LS1 crate motor arrive yet? I've heard they're robust enough to handle some minimal forced induction right out of the box.

As for air bags, do they all make your car sound like it's passing gas?! If so, nope, I don't want those!

I always wondered about the compressor. Airing up a tire is annoying as fawk. Can you hear the compressor in these systems?

Depends on the compressor and the install. I can't remember the guys name, but he's a member on here with a 6MT 4G TL on air from FL; pdiddy knows him. You could just barely hear a faint hum when raising the car up, and with a correctly sized tank, the hum doesn't last long.

It's not going to sound like a gas station air compressor though.

I drive a range rover that comes stock with air suspension. It does not make any noise when driving. Only noise is when I hit the button to lower the vehicle, but I can't see that bothering anyone.

Air suspensions are heavy and not the best for handling. I wouldn't put it on anything considered sporty, even tho the new range seems to corner pretty well for an SUV.

If handling was a priority I wouldn't consider air, but modern systems actually handle fairly well. They're getting more and more common at the track.

It's also because the newer ones still use dampers with the bag, not just the huge bags of yesteryear.
