I have since added the Acadia to my list. But again, it'll push close to $40K, likely.

Cars are incredibly expensive these days.
I just put a deposit on a 2011 RDX SH-AWD Tech package for about $36k before taxes. CPO MDX would be a nice choice, but they still cost quite a bit as well. The RDX has quite a few bells and whistles and IMO, a semi-reasonable price when compared to some other vehicles.

Cars are very expensive indeed. Even worse are the dealers that aren't willing to negotiate at all.
I would go with the Ford Edge as well, I really like it. The GMC Acadia also surprised me, it drove quite nice and had lots of bells and whistles.
Have you looked at Audi Q5s? One of my co-workers picked one up for 39k last week but a nicely optioned model would run into 40k+. Good luck and let us know.

Though the used car market really has become overpriced (as Shoofin detailed in his auction thread) I think I'd still go CPO over new unless the model I wanted wasn't available used (like the 2011 Edge Sport).

i remember several years ago thinking the very same thing when i priced out a loaded accord, and it cost over $30k.
i remember when my parents bought a 96 maxima for under $19k.

First choice for me would be to keep the Murano, save the cash that you would have used for car payments and put it towards maintaining it. I think you would still come out ahead.
If you are dead set against keeping what you have, then I would look at the Pilot, Edge / Flex or Santa Fe.
Is the Murano under warranty? When does it run out?

My Nissan dealer gave me a quote of $800 under invoice on a 2010 Murano. Premium, leather, technology packages and the panoramic roof. Not bad.

CX-9 has some great reviews. I personally don't have any experience with it though.

Safety Car
2011 Jeep Laredo: Best bet.
Subaru Outback: Just spent 1100 miles in it over the past 4 days. pretty amazing car for 25k.
Edge: Would stay away from the new model due to overpricing. i recall that the original edge was selling for ~20%+ more when it first came out.
Flex/Tranverse: Ugly, IMO.
Chevy Equinox, Hyundai Tucson/Sante Fe are also nicely packaged.
For some reason Mazda and Nissan SUVs seem haphazard. i would only be comfortable leasing those.

It shouldn't it was rated the most reliable luxury SUV.

But it's not really a 5 seater and not a 7.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
I had one for about 17 days in Florida a month ago. The gas mileage is abysmal (15 on the highway, and that was with a steady 75 MHP nothing crazy) but it rode well for a high sitting truck. Maybe with a lower price tag, as a people hauler.
Just bring gas cans along.

Unless I'm mistaken, the new Explorer isn't out yet. You probably drove the old Explorer, which is completely different.

That's what I figured.
Personally unless you are having mechanical issues with the car I would hold on to it. You drive it about 6500 miles a year. 50K will be another 18 months. Save the cash. I am just not wowed but most of what is out there.

There are different car buying services that give you a set price through your credit union, or american express, etc. You can go on there and see what they offer, its free and it can also be used as a negotiating tool saying that there is a dealer that will give you $xx,xxx for the car can you get me a better deal. I use www.zag.com and its straight forward, however I see the 2011 Edge is not there (although I don't believe they are out yet). If anything else it gives you an idea on what a dealer can sell it for or a starting point.

I'm certainly not rushing into this. But will be "forced" to make a decision in the next 12-15 months, as I get closer to 50K.

I'm still not sure I agree with the assessment that the used car market is overpriced. I think it's appropriately priced given the (overpriced) initial price of the cars and the current demand for used cars coupled with a flat or down supply. The new car market is a victim of inflation, and the used car market is a victim of inflation and increased demand; both are way overpriced (as is almost everything these days).

Right you are... it's called supply and demand. The higher used car prices get the happier I am.

I've used CarsDirect as a negotiating tool. Funny thing was the dealer I went to was the local dealer in the area that had the price agreement with CarsDirect, but the sales manager didn't even know about.

Sure, make sense to use them as a data point for the negotiation. But I'm curious if the acquisition process has been facilitated through one of these entities?
